Guest Pete Griffin Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 All i can say is, it depends how old you are, what part of the country your from, how far you travel, and how often do you go out to soul events ect. There are loads of oldies that are new to me, play a oldie that is new to me, and a 45 plus person may say Stafford spin, wigan oldie ect, and a 18 - 30 year old, depending on if he goes to events a lot may never have herd it before. You just cant win folks

Well done. thats how nasty rumours get started Peter anyone that listens to anything that Simon M has to say must have nothing going for them in life and desperate for conversation, he is in a time warp and dont believe that the 1960s ever existed, i all i hear from him is that there are only 4 decades of soul and thats only by counting back from today come on then lets have some cracking forgotten modern that you feel needs re-activating

Have you any particular favourites? You can pm if you don't want to come out!

BrianB Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 I listen to Frank Polk and I am back at Wigan mid 75. Great record!
Peter99 Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 Its a b-side on RCA ...Robin played for it for a little while ! Those are exactly the tunes that I mean Simon - stuff that only got a little air time cos there was so much quality stuff about. I've forgotten hundreds of similar tunes - it's easier to recall some of the bigger tunes that were played for a little longer.

Guest in town Mikey Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 I heard The Brothers at the night in Abergavenny recently. Wouldnt be surprised to hear it at the Yate revival in Berkeley in a few weeks either. Not sure that the current scene could put up with too many 'shufflers' these days.
Peter99 Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 I agree there are some great sixties tunes that should be reactivated too - as many of you have said already not the same old same old stuff. Take a listen to Pat Brady and Gary Rushbrookes 1980 wigan sets posted up earlier - there's some great stuff on there that could do with being spun again.
Guest soul99 easylay Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 Get your dictionary out & look up Northern Soul........you'll realise then that the whole point of the original scene was/is to find new tunes to play..........gets harder, thats why reactivations of interesting oldies is so vital too these day's. I dont think anyone is saying that the top 500 for want of a better expression, arnt on the whole good records, but do you really want to hear them out every week, to me this isnt a Northern Soul scene as it goes against every ethic, that the original pioneer DJ's & yes those at Wigan & all the venues from the 'golden era' were trying to acheive, along with some very hard working DJ's these day's. I have no problem with anyone wanting to listen to Frank Wilson until they are sick, but pse dont fob me off with venues playing this & the like constantly, as being the 'real' NS venues..............stay in ya time warp guys, I'll come & visit once a year & have a thoroughly good time, but the rest of the time i'll stick to the genuine article thank you . BTW 'Rare Soul Shite' was what this wonderful music of ours was known as prioir to the term NS, some on the scene prefer this term so as not to be asscotiated with what the rest of the world think is NS . Keep the Faith....Okeh Russ I think you have completely missed the point of my post, or at least completely misunderstood what I posted mate If you look back at what I said, it was go for a mix of old and new, but don't refuse to play something just because it's well known and don't just play something because it's rare and falls into the Soul genre (exercise some quality control over whether it is worth playing or not!) I don't want to quibble here, but I'd argue the toss over what you reckon the "whole point of the scene is" (as you put it) - it wasn't ever to just find new tunes! It was because there was this magical, etherial music that existed that hadn't been heard widely before and it made your senses sing and just had to be danced to and enjoyed, once it had been discovered then the race was on to find how much more there was, so the discovering of new tunes comes secondary to the music that existed surely? As for "Rare Soul Shite" I don't think I used that as an expression either What I said was just because something is Soul and is rare - it can still be shite (just look at modern ) I could be wrong but I always thought that the scene was "Northern" before it became "Rare", I thought the rare happened because of some of the inate snobbery on scene about some people wanting to distance themselves from manic dancers speeding off their tits in wierd clothes and wanted to introduce a more chin stroking element - some of us don't give a toss what the outside world thinks - the scene will always be Northern to me. But then again some of us aint snobs either PS I looked up Northern Soul in the dictionary (as you suggested), but it don't exist mate ..........please don't suggest Wikipedia, otherwise it would just say "see Frank Wilson, The Twisted Wheel, Wigan Casino and Ian levine........oh and by the way it happened North of Watford"
Guest gordon russell Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 I HAVENT HAD MUCH EXPOSURE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! TO ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!!! yes you have you naughty boy
Guest Mart B Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 There are loads of little known and underplayed oldies,a lot were only played at one venue for a matter of weeks, and if you travelled around the country to different venues it would be mostly new to you. It's great to see small venues like the Attic Mansfield giving these records well deserved spins again. What about deactivating hammered oldies and djs play under played oldies that should have been played anyway .Work that one out
Ezzie Brown Posted November 15, 2007 Author Posted November 15, 2007 yes you have you naughty boy get ur arse to middleton boyo... JUST PLAYED LP ONLY TRACK SPELLBOUND THE POPPIES GREAT OLDIE!!!!!!!! ive just found some MORE of these grinning ball things ACE!!!! only took a year
Northern Soul Uk Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 What we 'oldies' have to understand, is that although the tracks that we call oldies were played to death in the 70s/80s, the 'new kids on the block' may never have heard them, so they will seem new to them. It's called the progression of the scene. There are lots of 'underplayed' records out there that could do wiith a 'reactivation' if this is the correct term. I myself believe that if a record didn't stand the test of time back in the day by only being played for a few weeks, they can't be a memorable as the ones that still get hammered after 30 years or so. Saying that, times and tastes do change and some tracks that were not popular back then, might sound a lot better now on hearing them years later. Only my opinion though.

BrianB Posted November 16, 2007 Posted November 16, 2007 Bit of a racy title, but "Girls with the Big Black Boots" the Paramonts/Paramounts (too early!) was spun around twice at Wigan early 74. This is top class northern. However it was swamped by the sheer amount of new stuff being played. Because it was only played twice, no one remembers it, so it will never be a reactivated oldie. How many of these are out there from the Torch/Mecca/Casino? Hundreds. Can't someone do some research, take some time over it, and do a night, or a spot of this type of record. Not a Dave Evison unusual oldie spot, but a thought out, well promoted spot. Probably get denounced here, but I for one would be there.

Russ Vic, I think you are misunderstanding me for comic effect now The snobbery issues I alluded to aren't with regards to me looking down my nose at anyone mate (I'm as common as muck, so trust me I couldn't be a snob if I tried!), I don't have a fraction of the Northern "knowledge" that many of the SS members have on here, so I couldn't be a snob. I aren't a DJ nor am I a vinyl collector - I'm a dancer and a NS appreciator that's all The snobbery I mentioned, is to do with the fact that there seems to be an elitist faction on the NS scene these days who give derisery scoffs at classic Northern sounds because (in their words) they are "pop", "played out" or "beneath them to play them" , which is why I said "once a great NS tune, always a great NS tune". With regards to those who are still hunting out new stuff, then all power to their elbow and I for one would applaud them, as they are keeping the scene fresh and alive, I most definately wouldn't look down my nose at them, as I said they will have a vastly superior knowledge to me, so I couldn't. .....and I like your style with regards to a DJ set of "just put some thought into it" But you have confused me with your last paragraph, I don't think I said that the original NS scene was about listening to played out oldies again and again - I think I said it was about appreciating this newly discovered music, so I think we are both coming from the same direction, but maybe just not getting our points across very well? as regards to me being a top bloke, thank you very much I'm sure we both are mate "Keep on, keeping on"
