Guest Bearsy Posted December 23, 2007 Posted December 23, 2007 the book is published and sold to hopefully make the person that has wrote it some money, i can put a list up and put some money behind it and get it published and that would be what i think has been the major tunes played on the scene in the last 35 years or so, does it matter if im right or wrong it would be how ive seen it and then put in a book to sell to those that might be interested, if no one is interested i stand to lose big money but if it sells really well im in to make a bit of money, why did book No2 just come out, i tell you why, because book No1 obviously sold very well.
Peter99 Posted December 23, 2007 Posted December 23, 2007 It's quite a debate this. The book simply lists what Kev Roberts see's as his top 500 - for whatever reason - simple as that. I like many others wouldn't choose a great number of his choices. I think the book was written and intended for the masses that may have liked the odd "Northern Soul" record.
Guest gordon russell Posted December 23, 2007 Posted December 23, 2007 who's top 500?......absolutely pointless excercise.....there a few pop tunes there also.....If you really wanted a top 500 then get someone who has infinately more knowledgr than KR.......BUTCH FOR INSTANCE at least we'd only get soul records
De-to Posted December 23, 2007 Posted December 23, 2007 trouble is everyones top 500 will be different ie im sure mine would be different than yours, its horses for courses
Guest gordon russell Posted December 23, 2007 Posted December 23, 2007 trouble is everyones top 500 will be different ie im sure mine would be different than yours, its horses for courses I know,I know......I just wish people would get real about KR'S contribution to anything. As soon as a persons sole motivation in a certain area is money first........then that person ceases to have any relavence imo

The book is a good representation of the northern scene and at least 300 of those top 500 should be in there

The book is a good representation of the northern scene and at least 300 of those top 500 should be in there Agreed..... This thread proves most people can't even agree what should be classed as 'Northern' Soul..... let alone 500 of the best of them!!...
Guest soulmaguk Posted December 23, 2007 Posted December 23, 2007 Following on from my last thread, somebody asked what were The Northern Soul Top 100- 500? Roughly its the list below, tho there may be a few typos. Interested to know peoples comments. I do appreciate that the list is another persons point of view of records that influenced the scene. Godzilla Posted December 23, 2007 Posted December 23, 2007 Who else would include the Falsher except for the Kev. The record was down to him in the first place wasn't it, one of his productions? Mistura's version of "Life is a Song.." was played first. Flasher was the group's follow up and was consequently played as a new release. They were coupled together when released in the UK. You can knock The Flasher (and God knows I have) but you can't deny the fact that at its peak it was absolutely huge and records like Sam Fletcher, although superior couldn't touch it for popularity when first played.

And to a certain extent, that's the essence of the book - popularity as opposed to critical disection. There are lots of records post Wigan and the Mecca that I would have in my top "500" before some in the book, particularly those that shaped the revival period built around venues like Stafford, but I would struggle to include many that would have had such a long standing impact as those discovered, played and loved in the years between 1971 and 1975. Just my opinion, of course.

Just my opinion, of course. Popular at the time of it's release maybe, but for how long? My guess just a short period of popularity? It's hardly left a lasting impression has it since it's popularity waned. It's probably had little or no influence on the scene since it's brief(?) popularity, certainly no long standing impact, not in my time on the scene. There are plenty from the 80's period of the scene that have had a far more influence on the scene than the Flasher (and others amongst the list) yet are not included..and they continue to have an influence, like I said earlier you only have to look at playlists every week to see this. All IMHO of course Edited December 23, 2007 by chalky

All IMHO of course I wasn't particularly referring to "The Flasher" which I agree has had little long standing influence on the scene, if any, since the peak of it's popularity, but more the general observation that the top "500" reflects those sounds that are considered to be the bedrock of the formative years of the scene and that by default, almost, they become the most popular. I'm glad that current playlists represent the great number of sounds discovered in the 80's and beyond - I don't want to listen to the top "500" tracks when I'm out, but as a retro assessment it's difficult to argue against the quality of the vast majority of those listed and the importance they hold in defining the early days of the scene. What is important, however, is that the scene continues to move forward and that we are not dependant on a limited number of individuals viewpoints in order to sustain matters, even if the opinions posed have merit. Just my opinion of course.
scunnyjack Posted December 25, 2007 Posted December 25, 2007 Which only a few would have heard of and would sell about 10 copies if published. The book is a good representation of the northern scene and at least 300 of those top 500 should be in there Received the latest edition of Kev's book from my wife for christmas and any soul music present is better than the usual socks etc and whilst everyone has different opinions about the book and contents, to me one glaring omission is Herbert Hunter's-I was born to love you which to me has always been a popular record on the northern dancefloor. Seasons Greetings to everyone
