Anybody ever heard 191 @ Donnie Elbert - A Little Piece Of Leather played at an all-nighter?

F**ked if I have. If it hasn't been played at an all nighter........shouldn't be on the list.

but is this book just a reproduce of the last one.

Why not a new book with more entries and not so much the same 500. times have changed in the last few years and so many new records have been hit and played so much.

Imagine the new list to include Chris Clarke, Marv Johnson, Kirk Franklin, Robert John, Jnr Walker, Diana Ross and the Supremes, Kenny Thomas, Sam Cooke, Kurt Harris, Drizabone, Jackie Wilson, Lisa Stansfield, Jeff Perry and so on

Always been played at nighters from the Wheel to the Torch, through to Mr Ms. Haven't heard it out for a while though.

not sure about the above list but im supporting kev on the dex when he comes to bristol to launch the new version of this book and the flyers have the front cover on them with sidney barnes"standing on solid ground" and mandrills too late on so there are new additions as these arnt in my old copy

as for the book no one one will agree 100% which kev states in the book...its just his observation of dancefloor activity over the years...i think its a great "coffee table book " something you can pick up when you have some spare time and put down without losing your place !....aswell as the top 500 chart there are also lots of other interesting facts and charts which everyone who is into soul would love....or should love !!

whatever you think of kev give it a go... a great xmas prezzie......now wheres my cheque !!

I find it amazing that people want to add Lisa stansfield & Miss out Donnie Elbert.

Assume we're talking Lisa Satansfield track 8:3:1 Eight letters, Three Words, One Meaning, here

Massive record on modern scene few years back

So much better & more relevant than Donnie Elbert.....

I thought the book was the Northern Soul Top 500, and therefore as a Northern Soul record Donnie Elbert is far more relevant. Lisa Stansfield as far as I know is a record played at primarily in modern rooms, but also on occasion played at Northern/rare soul events. I know many Modern fans like to dissassociate themselves fron the Northern Soul scene because of the 60s bias, and also because the playing of white pop, or soul soundalikes is not in keeping with a "Soul" scene. or am I missing some point.

But then again I don't like most "Modern" stuff anyway :P

Donnie Elbert was played, thats why its in. It does not matter if its any good, its just an overview of popular records over the last 40 years at Northern Soul events.

He made a good version of 'The way you do the things you do' if I remember right.

Well you're a lucky boy. Cos when you finally need a break from the northern scene & (almost everybody does),

you've got 3 decades of soul to discover/appreciate.

It's alright ta, I won't bother with Modern, I'll just move straight to disco, it's all the same anyway

It's hardly gonna be straight forward Northern now is it. Why do you think a book based on Northern soul now could use both Modern and crossover tunes etc.

You have Curtis Mayfield - Move On Up Listed yet to me it's not totally 100% Northern when i think of it as funk just as much as it is Northern.

i think Lisa Stansfield is great and certainly one of the UK's best female soul singers

What you hav'nt heard it or just not at an allnighter?... It was an early sixties club sound and was played a lot at places like the RickyTic in Windsor and the Flamingo in Wardour Street..

Unsurprisingly there's a load of stuff in that list that I've never heard and a few that I actually have in my collection (Somewhere... :D ), what is surprising is how many artists there are up there doing songs that I don't like as much as some of their other material. Is that what's meant by a 'Type 2' NS fan?

Theres not a Stafford diccovery untill you get to Sam Fletcher at 215 , surely the venue had more influence on the scene than that ?

Did Kev Roberts ever go to the Top Of The World ? If it is "its just his observation of dancefloor activity over the years "

Someone needs to do an alternative top 500 , not as Wigan biased as this one.

Posted

Seems to be fashionable to slate the top 500 book at the moment but i'm willing to bet that the majority of folks who are slagging it off actually own a copy or have at least read it cover to cover several times.

Must admit I own a copy & I disagree with several things in it but could all the folks who slag it off do a better job?

I doubt it somehow.

If you think you could try listing a top 20 never mind a top 500 post it up below but remember it must be a general top 20 covering the Northern scene & NOT your personal favourites.

Thats what this is though , K Roberts personal favourites , its not a very good reflection of records and their influence on the scene over the last 35 years .

Think we all may argue at what order these records should be listed - indeed there are lots of records I own or have heard that don't even make it into the book.

In fairness they probably represent the 500 most played/best dancefloor reaction tunes of the last 30 odd years.

Like everybody else I have my likes & my dislikes in there - that would always be the case in a project like this.

If you were to do a project like this properly representatives from all of the top venues should have had an input .

It was compiled by someone who missed the 80's completly ( im not having a go at Mr Roberts) Stafford and its important influence on the scene is not represented fairly.

For example Bud Harper packed dance floors from the 100 club to Glenrothes , George Smith one of the first mid tempo tracks to get people up on the floor at anytime of the night when before the slow ones were used as enders ,Dont get a mention.

Posted (edited)

Mistura With Lloyd Michells - The Flasher  has this really had a bigger influence on the scene than the 300+ records listed after it  Has it had any influence at all....I doubt it rolleyes.gif

The list is basically one persons opinion and if we all sat down and wrote 500 records that we think have influenced the scene I dare say we would all have a different 500.

Got to agree with Playfair, Stafford and the 80's era in general grossly ignored and under represented. You only have to look at playlist to see the influence the period still has on the scene.

Fair point, but if you're going to limit to 500 then you will always get that situation? And while I haven't an opinion one way or the other on the subject, not being old enough to go back to the early days, I can think of records that I would include that are missing, and conversely there are records on there I don't know so wouldn't include.

Can ANYONE claim to know how popular every record played has been, how widely it was played once broken and for how long?

Its a brave attempt at setting a yardstick, and I can't argue about the tracks on there I do know, though The Flasher and ......Leather intrigue me to say the least, but I'll accept his knowledge to be deeper than mine.

Like i said on an earlier post if this project was undertaken by representitves from all the main venues it would have painted a truer picture and it would have made interesting reading

As it is its just one persons top 500 .

Imagine if Ian Levine,Colin Curtis,Keith Minshull,Russ Winstanly,Richard Searling,Pat Brady,Guy Hennighan,Kev Roberts etc.........Got together and did a top 500 , now that would be something

its a book with the option to buy/read, personally its of very little interest to me,

It's got to be a personal opinion, if not totally then certainly in parts. Who else would include the Falsher except for the Kev. The record was down to him in the first place wasn't it, one of his productions?

Have records like the Flasher, Dobie Gray Out On The Floor, Invitations Ski-ing In The Snow really had a bigger influence on the scene than say John And The Weirdest, The Fidels etc????

Maybe soul source should do it's own top 500? There's a fair representation of all the years on the scene on here, from the early days right through to today.

And who would question the qualifications of Ady Croasdell, Dave Evison, John Manship, Ginger taylor, Bob Hinsley, Carl Willingham,

The point I am trying to make is it would feed another discussion as to why or why not was x y and z involved/not involved

Would change from a debate about the top 500 tunes to the top 20 pioneers of NS

That's quite an interesting debate in itself - the disassociation thing. I'm a modern fan - but like many others I cut my teeth on 60's soul. I still like sixties and all forms of soul music and would never try and disassociate myself from Northern Soul. How could I - for me modern and seventies are an intrinsic part of the Northern Soul scene. I think there are many sixties fans who like to disassociate themselves from anything that was recorded from 1970 onwards.
