Simsy Posted November 4, 2007 Posted November 4, 2007 Mine's the same. Maybe Motown not proud of Bell disb? Pricewise though, sure I saw this for £50 not so long back. Thought £20ish more like it?

Jaco Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 (edited) Later pressings of Soul 35008 - Jr Walker - "Shotgun", Soul 35010 - Hit Pack - "Never say no to your baby", Soul 35011 - Freeman Brothers and Soul 35012 - Jr Walker - "Do the boomerang" were pressed with "Distributed by Bell Records Inc, N.Y.C" at the bottom of the label, due to an error at the pressing plant. Rather than scrap an entire batch of records, Motown apparently decided to cover up the error using a black marker. Info at www.seabear.se. Edited November 5, 2007 by Jaco
Guest Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 I was always under the impression that Motown did approach BELL to distribute SOUL label and the deal faulted at a late stage. Hence labels already printed. The BELL DISTRIBUTED is blacked over by printing not by hand. So they would rerun the whole sheet of labels to "black" over. I have documented the following numbers as having BELL distributed text at the bottom. 35008 35010 35011 # 35009 is Earl Van Dyke - All For You - so I can't confirm any text on that one. If anyone has any additional #'s I would love to know which ones. NOTE you can find labels with the BELL text NOT blacked over. But they seem to be very rare..

Sebastian Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 I was always under the impression that Motown did approach BELL to distribute SOUL label and the deal faulted at a late stage. Hence labels already printed. I've always thought this was the case as well, but I guess this might have been "edited out" from the history of Motown. It sure would make sense with that Freeman Brothers 45 appearing on a Motown label for instance.

Pete S Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 Here's a Hit Pack without the Bell distribution
Jaco Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 jaco "Soul 35012 - Jr Walker - "Do the boomerang" I don't recall ever seeing this with BELL DISTRIBUTED text on the label, have you got a copy or seen one?? Can you PM me a scan, much appreciated if you can. john John, I've never seen a Soul 35012 with the "Bell Distributed" text but had recalled that the info was on www.sebear.se, prompted by the earlier post about the Hit Pack. Maybe, as you and Sebastain have suggested that Motown contacted Bell about distribution, that the info is not fully correct.

Soul 35012 with BELL text could well exist, I'll keep an eye out for it, But I must have sold 100s over the years..and call recall seeing one. If anyone has seen or owns Junior Walker's - Tune Up - Soul with BELL DISTRIBUTION text at the bottom of the label please PM me..
