Guest Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Hi there has anybody noticed people fighting on the soul scene at soul do's lately. It seems to be increasing because the last few soul nights I have been to there has been fighting has anybody else noticed this ? I am sure it never used to be like this or is an influx of bad people or are attiudes changing whats it like for the rest of you up and down the country?
Spacehopper Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 to be honest never seen nothin but good manners....sadly the scooter scene is still a little dodgy at times !

No fighting at all....where is this happening? Steve Edited October 29, 2007 by Steve G
Kev Connellan Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Only been on the scene 7 years but never witnessed any fighting myself. Is this happening at a northern night or at a motown/soul disco type thing full of local clubbers?
spot Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 (edited) Apparently at the last Corner Pocket Soul night there was a bit of a "To do" just before it ended, which I've been reliably informed (eye witness) included; bleeding noses, persons flat out on floor, ladies engaged in right hook throwing & large amounts of loud verbals etc, followed by apologies all round for spoiling peoples evening, now you wouldn't get that bit in a night club or a boozer, would you. But to be fair it's very very rare & usually nipped in the bud as soon as it happens. So remember Sir Elton was wrong cos "Saturday nights allright for dancing" not fighting. Take care & be safe but remember bob & weave my son, Spot. Edited October 29, 2007 by spot
night nurse Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 i never seen a fight at any of the places we go to up here in notts but i have seen a few arguments witch always have seemed to fizzle out most of the folks we know go out for the music and to mix with other like minded people although i have heard of fights on the scean never in the past 7 yrs have i witnessed one
KevH Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 all this talk of fighting reminds me of PeteS's thread about Blue Hills Remembered,(Dennis Potter play).....you'll need to know the play to get what i mean. Anyway don't mess with the Attic boys,,we're all black belts in Origami.

Am I to take it there was fighting at the Empress Rooms' Ladies Night on Saturday then?
Trev Thomas Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 some of the do's ive been to lately could do with a good fight to liven them up
Simsy Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 First thread I ever wrote 'peace not punch ups' was on this very subject. That turned out to be locals with pints on the dancefloor etc. Thankfully not a common occurrence on our scene.
Mal C Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 I Only remember one fight, it was at the Old Vic in the late eighties, some chaps had a big Bust up over a woman!!! Well there you go, what its all about!! Laughs Mal

Platters 81 Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 i was pinned down by Joan and slapped with a sausage sandwich once......(luckily there wasnt any HP sauce on it....... )
Mal C Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 to be honest never seen nothin but good manners....sadly the scooter scene is still a little dodgy at times ! Ahh its just a bit of RUFF and TUMBLE!!! Do big skinny heads still turn up to the Runs? Remember one of the biggest nastiest lookin skin head guys greeted us at Margate rally in 86, he looked like robocop... me and a mate drove up to him expecting a barrage of abuse, he opened his mouth and out came Charles Hawrtrey! laughs Great start to a scooter run! soulcrew Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Am I to take it there was fighting at the Empress Rooms' Ladies Night on Saturday then? I can assure you NO THERE WAS NO FIGHTING AT THE EMPRESS ROOMS. We have a very friendly soul night at our venue. Were people come to enjoy theirselves, and go home contented. Soul Crew

Sweeney Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Point of order! The first rule of Northern Fight Club is that you don't talk about Northern Fight Club!
Guest Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Was the bar closing at the time? Brings back happy memories of Southgate! But it was always 'outsiders' fighting to get in!!
Iancsloft Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 i was pinned down by Joan and slapped with a sausage sandwich once......(luckily there wasnt any HP sauce on it....... ) =========================================================================== Ay that Joan she,s mad i saw her throw a banana at a dj at a alniter at the Cricketers in Wiggin Best one was Clarence throwing Pete Lawson around 4 mtrs into a screen at the Concord suite Alniter the lead up to that was has funny as it gets
Guest vinylvixen Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Brings back happy memories of Southgate! But it was always 'outsiders' fighting to get in!! Ady remembers this better than me....the time Nicky Crane (well known skinhead at the time) came barging in and whacked Martin Bishop (my b/f at the time) for no reason whatsoever. Randy made short work of Nicky Crane and that was that...Southgate could be 'lively' at times I had to 'apprehend' a young lady at the 100 for dipping into peoples handbags - she eventually got a clump off someone else and went home with a face like a slapped arse.... But apart from that, it's so rare to see fisticuffs at a soul venue - thank goodness. Jo

M still loads of big skinnyheads although no nazi salutes thank god !...to be fair i only do a few rallies nowadays and although i didnt witness it ive been told there were a couple of incidents at exmouth this year....sometimes it just seems theres an underlying atmosphere where the smallest thing could result in it kickin off, something i never feel amoungst the biggest tuffest lookin soulies....or maybe im gettin paro in my old age!!
Guest FrostyJak Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 some of the do's ive been to lately could do with a good fight to liven them up YOU MUST HAVE BEEN TO SAME DO's AS ME Went to the Kings hall last year JUNE/JULY time seemed a right load of "nutters" spoiling for a scuffle around that night. But it was a right warm/sticky nite which could have had something to do with it + there was a few pill heads & lickers about I,ve been going to niters since 78/79 and only seen 1 fight that was at stafford Top of the world but thinking back it could have been as the nighter started & the "Normal" night was closing
Davekd Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 I only go to one or two 'do's' a month in London and the surrounding areas and never seem anything even close to a punch up. Soul nights are the friendliest nights out around, although I suppose it would be difficult to generate some aggro at a Tea Dance as well. Dave
Guest Doris Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Hi there has anybody noticed people fighting on the soul scene at soul do's lately. I am sure it never used to be like this or is an influx of bad people or are attiudes changing whats it like for the rest of you up and down the country? Think it tends to be at do's where local people (no disrespect meant) go in to get a late one in rather than for the soul do. We went to Fleetwood a few months back and an ickle friend of mine who is the most unasuming person was threatened in the ladies (i use that term loosely here!!??) shame indeed Doris
Ste Henderson Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Im not supprised fights break out, particulary when some dj decides to play some modern choons Its a wonder we dont have riots .... Yours In Jest Steve
MarkWhiteley Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Am I to take it there was fighting at the Empress Rooms' Ladies Night on Saturday then? Why would you mention the Empress Rooms Joan? Never any bother there!

macca Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 I think we tend to look at the past with rose tinted specs at times. while the all-nighter scene was a fairly placid place years ago, at least compared to the average saturday night out for 'normal people', ugly scenes did occur from time to time. who wouldn't remember the awful scourge that were barbiturates? some of the saddest sights I've ever witnessed on the scene were barbiturate related.

Blimey!! Barbiturates - they are a blast from the past. I'd almost forgotten they were once part of NS.
Chalky Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 I blame alcohol, especially with the all night licenses now and late bars. One time you never saw alcohol at a nighter. There's always been trouble between soulies but thankfully by and large it is kept away from the vernues. There's plenty of trouble lots don't see or hear about that hapopens behind the scenes.
Citizen P Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Rose Coloured Glasses indeed, although it was always less common to see punch ups and blood letting at any Soul do than on a "normal" night out. There have always been those who woud relieve you of your-coat,holdall,money,gear,records and be prepared to do you damage for the priveledge. Tony
Pauldonnelly Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 the best NS scrap EVER was when Wigan Rugby League 1st team 'somehow' got into the Casino. It kicked off big time in the upstairs area, Peter Widdison?? hit this prop forward from the rear with a casino chair, it broke into a 1000's pieces and the bloke just turned round with a "who the f*** did that' glare. Bloker from Peterborough hit this bloke with the best right hander ever, it broke two bones in his hand..pmsl I don't know what happend next as I was under a table as if a H bomb was going to be dropped on Station Rd any minute. I have it on very good authority that a certain Harboro Horace did some dancing that night ...lol
Bazza Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 (edited) I have been told, a Venue in Sheffield I usually attend, but did'nt last month, that something went off ,fists flying and some one was hit in the face with a stilletto shoe, the sharp end, that sez it all to me,as a result the Do was cancelled this month by the club management ,,no word yet if it will ever be allowed on again, because of it Bazza Edited October 29, 2007 by bazza

We had a handful of dust ups at the 100 Club probably about one every 5 years on average which isn't too frequent. The best involved a loudmouth, a lamp post and Portsmouth's larger than life Debbie Gillen who was underwear free that night. Let's just say she applied her own version of smelling salts to the misguided youth. There were some wilder characters about in the early days, life is a lot more peaceful nowadays thank God.

Sure it was said someone came up from behind ther record sales table, from under the table and stuck the nut on this Wigan player? Made me laugh when I read it. Could have been Ady who wrote about it

ADi when was the casino bust up..1974 or 5? wasn't that the night Mick Smith went into Bruce Lee mode..PMSL.
Ady Croasdell Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 ADi when was the casino bust up..1974 or 5? wasn't that the night Mick Smith went into Bruce Lee mode..PMSL. Sounds about right, me Mick, Roger and Pete Wid had a hilarious scrap with some West London troublemakers down the 100 Club one night after the jazz had finished and while the soul crowd were queueing up outside. It was a case of "take your partners", they were a real anti-climax and left very sheepishly.

LOL BACK in 75 The boys who were behind most of the Football stuff in Peterborough during those days managed to get into an all-nighter at the Wirrina, one guys pays and he opens the fire exits and 40 odd piles in, off their tits on Ben Truman/Red barrel and french blues. I clocked them at about 3am and remember approaching Colin Bullivant from The Dogsthopre (an old Torch guy who enjoyed his beer and other but the knuckle was his baby) he informed me that some of the NS crowd had sold some poor gear earlier on in the night and the football boys were hell bent on revenge. as my spot was 6am I fooked off home to get out the way, a nice chin wag with the now Mrs and we returned at 5-30.. Dave Mindham advised me that chairs were thrown at 4am ish and Sam was not impressed..happy days.
Jumpinjoan Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 No there was no fighting at the empress rooms on saturday I did not mention it in my first post No... your post said there has been fighting at soul do's you've been to recently. So I had a look at all your past posts... and every single one of them was about the Empress Rooms.
shute Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Only fight(s) that I remeber ever seeing was in the late 70s at the Casino when the punks tried to but in the nighter sceen.... got dragged into a doorway and kicked a few times until the boys in blue on horses came around..... seen nothing since
Russ Vickers Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Remember some clown clocking Winston round the head with a bit of two by four outside the 100 Club one night..........I was doing some window shopping along Oxford St , saw what happened & went off in hot pursuit, with Winston a close second & Ady bringing up the rear (pardon the expression), realising this chap still had his plank I armed myself from a skip (?)...............only to realise I was making ground & would soon catch up, not being a partcularly aggressive person & realising, 'sh*t' this guy just decked Winston !!!' & that I had acted on the spur of the moment.......... I suddenly thought 'What the f**k am I going to do when I catch this guy', subsequently I slowed down slightly..........the guy had faded into the distance by the time the others caught up & needless to say we never did catch him..........alway's smile about this, Winstons 'head' apart, cos I remember being quite concerned that Ady & Winston might rumble me & think I was a right puff if they ever realised what had really happened, luckily was never rumbled until now . Russ

Guest soul99 easylay Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 Hi there has anybody noticed people fighting on the soul scene at soul do's lately. It seems to be increasing because the last few soul nights I have been to there has been fighting has anybody else noticed this ? I am sure it never used to be like this or is an influx of bad people or are attiudes changing whats it like for the rest of you up and down the country? Apart from (obviously) the wonderful music.... the great people and friendly atmosphere are what I really enjoy about going to Soul nights. I can only really speak for the 99 Soul Club soul nights at the Grand Hotel in Scarborough and Jinxy's Lakeside Soul & Motown nights in Scarborough, but I've never seen so much as a cross word at any of them let alone a scrap - but then again, I'm too busy trying to wear a hole in the dance floor to notice! It's a shame if the friendly atmosphere starts to wane, as that (along with the love of the music) is what sets the scene apart from other nights out (isn't it?) Even the Scarborough scooter ralley at the Spa had a really good atmosphere this year and there was loads of really p*ssed people there, so it aint always the alcohol, it's the type of person I reckon
