Guest Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 Hi everyone, I am currently the deputy venue manager for Manchester Metropolitan Students Union and we have an event every Friday called Fools Gold - which plays a litlle soul but mostly Indie music. The night isn't restricted to Students and is open to everyone. I'm hoping someone will be able to point me in the direction of a promoter who may be interested in working with us to do a Fools Gold - Wigan Casino Reunion night (a night dedicated to Northern Soul). I wouldn't say I'm the biggest fan of Northern soul but attended a night in Leeds about 4 months ago which made me realise it has an excellent following. In addition to this I also saw a play called once upon a time in Wigan which was fantastic about 2 years ago and ever since I've always kept an eye open for upcoming events. Being a Student bar/club we can do some amazing offers on drinks and we can fit about 1200 people in our bar and club spread over 2 floors - the club is spacious and split into two rooms. As I say the event is in very early stages and at this moment in time I'm not working on fixed dates (it will be a friday night) and really terms are up for discussion all be it not on a public forum. I'd also like to stress that the event would NOT be a student only event and would be open to people of all ages and backgrounds - it's about the music and people feeling comfortable expressing themselves how they see fit - I wasn't old enough to experience it but thats my impression of why Wigan Casino was so special and so magical for many. Thank you in advance for any help you may be able to give me. Chris

Pete S Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 Think you may have to take a little bit of the emphasis off "Wigan Casino" though to be honest - just stick to Northern Soul. There are some good lads running venues in that area who I'm sure would be happy to give you some advice. Would love to be able to help myself but all I promote is love, happiness and tolerance

Best bit of advice so far. If your aiming at a student crowd just give them some raw, funky and uptempo soul, dont even bother going down the 'northern soul' tag Some one like Shane from Sheffield, Mik Parry, would help you out and put you onto the right DJ's
chrissie Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 This reads as an honest and respectful post. Have you PM`d the poster with the persons contact details? Have to agree with you Bridget Great someone new posts, admits to knowing not much about NS and just because they mention wigan, which to be honest is what most people on the outside relate to the scene, people start taking this piss. Great welcome isn't it. Think you may have to take a little bit of the emphasis off "Wigan Casino" though to be honest - just stick to Northern Soul. Would love to be able to help myself but all I promote is love, happiness and tolerance Pete is right here, take the emphasis off Wigan and concentrate on Northern Soul. There are some great promoters in and around the Manchester areas who if couldn't help you themselves, I am sure would point you in the right direction. Try sending a PM to little-stevie or Paul Sadot, not sure of his exact name on soul source but someone will let you know, and I am sure one of them will be able to point you in the right direction. Sharon Cooper Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 that's good because it was an honest and respectful answer. Thats good then as I wouldn`t have thought it would have been meant in any other way. Don`t know either of you really...Only through reading the honest and respectful East Anglian posts! Anyway I truly hope that the original poster does get himself sorted locally...One of my sons went to Sheffield Hallam Uni and he said they had some Northern nights put on by the students union (He didn`t go to any though!)

Guest Posted October 24, 2007 Posted October 24, 2007 I'd like to thank everyone for the response. To all the people who have pm'd me I will contact you in due course although it may take a week or so as we are also trying to organise several other events at the same time. My emphasis on wigan casino was done due to our location (being near wigan) but have taken advise on board and would definately open the night up to a wider spectrum of soul. As I have said the feedback is very much appreciated and it would have been pointless starting a night without speaking to the fans of the music and the people that the night would hopefully be aimed at. Thank you once again. Chris
Tomangoes Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 I think you should know that Manchester had a famous Soul club long before Wigan Casino. Ed
Dave Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 I think you should know that Manchester had a famous Soul club long before Wigan Casino. Ed Why on earth should he need to know that?
Guest Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 Why on earth should he need to know that? I'm sure it's not why the point was raised but Maybe because he's trying to sort a nighter in the heartland of said club.. a 2nd room and certainly an element of it recognising T'Wheel would be sensible... Especially if he does this on a last friday of the month.... Friday nighter in the centre of town on any friday night would be a right pain on any friday actually. At least I can get a lie in before a saturday nighter!!. Jayne.x.

If MMSU wants to put on an event to enjoy music and have a party, why is a history lesson needed? Not sure I understand all you say.. is it an all-nighter that's planned?
Tomangoes Posted October 26, 2007 Posted October 26, 2007 Im sure you all know the point I am making. Here is a genuine guy who wants to run a Northern Soul night for the students of Manchester. He admits he is not a big fan himself and wondered if he should link Wigan Casino into the marketing. Its open to non students. OK, so it might have been more credible to the Manchester folk to link this night with its own heritage in front of the 'casino'. Its probable that any non students attending would come from Manchester and appreciate educating the kids how it used to be in Manchester. In terms of history lessons, I was under the impression that the Northern Soul scene has a music content mainly from the past 40 years and that some of the highest regarded examples of this music came to be made famous in Manchester. Simple really, just suggesting an approach that may help the event put bums on seats. I hope a promoter helps them out and the students have a night of great music. Ed

Ed I was thinking along the same lines.. When its two minutes away from The Wheel in the middle of an area that still has a big T.Wheel following it makes sense. Not sure if its a niter - they run Rock Kitchen on saturday's until 3am so they've got some kind of late licence. Jayne.x. Edited October 26, 2007 by Miss BurySoul
