First 45 on the label, I've had it on Tribe 8300 stock, so they must have changed the the label name for the release, as you suggested.

I think you'll find "Crazy Crajon Music" is Huey Meaux's music publishing co. and the label design is exactly the same as Tribe label design, except the label name and of course the release numbers correspond on future Tribe releases. Maybe that's why he changed the name from Running Bear to Tribe, because Major Bill Smith had a label of the same name in the same state, which I didn't know. I think Major Bill Smith used "Lebill" as his music publishing co. Correct me if I'm wrong, I am doing it off the top of my head.

"Running Bear" by Johnny Preston - to which I assume you refer - was not produced by Major Bill, and it was recorded in Houston, not Fort Worth. It wasn't produced by Huey Meaux, although of course East Texas was his stomping ground. The backing vocals on the record are by Country music king George Jones and "Chantilly Lace" man J.P. Richardson a.k.a The Big Bopper (who wrote the song). Major Bill Smith's main pop claims to fame are probably Bruce Channel's "Hey Baby", Paul and Paula's "Hey Paula" and J. Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers' "Last Kiss", although his labels also boast all sourts of Northern and deep soul, of course (Sons Of Moses, Carolyn Sullivan, Pic and Bill etc. etc)

Last thing I heard is that HP Meaux still is in the Texas State Prison. ...where with a bit of luck he will remain for the rest of his days. A few years ago, I was working in the studios in Houston where the unsavoury Mr. Meaux recorded most of his biggest hits. The studio owners set me up in a partially mirrored room, with two track and three track tape machines, in order that I could play through and assess the worth of unissued Meaux productions. All the time I was in there (nearly two weeks) I felt inexplicably ill at ease and uncomfortable with my surroundings. About halfway through my second week, I asked one of the regular studio engineers - who wasn't there during the Meaux years - why the room was partially mirrored the way it was. "Oh that's the room that Ol' Huey apparently used to use for his after hours child pornography sessions" he says - at which point I had to down tools for the day and drive back to my hotel as quickly as I could to take the longest shower of my life... Needless to say that I spent as little time as possible in there for the remaining three days of my time in the former Gold Star Studios.... Edited October 22, 2007 by TONY ROUNCE

I knew that he is in state prison for sexual child abuse (for the second time by the way) but for some reason I didn´t want to write it down in my initial posting. As I had to face a situation with my ex incl. child abuse for the last eight years (...and the trial hasn`t yet finished as the bastard who is already sentenced for three years has taken it now to a higher court) I couldn`t really take it when I found out these things about HP Meaux. As a result I sold all 45s I had (and it was some amount..) where he was the producer and/or writer. May they play "yee-haw" with him down in Texas in the prison is my opinion... Marc
