Richard Posted October 13, 2007 Posted October 13, 2007 I think someone should bring out a Northern Soul tunes CD done in a Pub Singer stylee
Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted October 13, 2007 Posted October 13, 2007 I think someone should bring out a Northern Soul tunes CD done in a Pub Singer stylee Plenty of authentic northern floorfillers sound like they're 'done in a pub singer stylee', anyway - "Born A Loser", "Stronger Than Me", "Is She In Your Town", "This Beautiful Day" etc., the list is extensive to say the least
Richard Posted October 13, 2007 Posted October 13, 2007 Plenty of authentic northern floorfillers sound like they're 'done in a pub singer stylee', anyway - "Born A Loser", "Stronger Than Me", "Is She In Your Town", "This Beautiful Day" etc., the list is extensive to say the least Ah but just imagine those remakes with even worse versions
Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted October 13, 2007 Posted October 13, 2007 Ah but just imagine those remakes with even worse versions Can't imagine anyone doing a worse job of 'Born A Loser' than Don Ray, Rich'

Just imagine it and then try to stop laughing Any others? You mean like- Soft Cell doing Gloria Jones - Tainted Love Tony Blackburn doing Doris Troy - I'll Do Anything Cher doing Alfie Davison - Love Is A Serious Business Or am I only allowed to use my imagination?
Kevinkent Posted October 13, 2007 Posted October 13, 2007 You mean like- Soft Cell doing Gloria Jones - Tainted Love Tony Blackburn doing Doris Troy - I'll Do Anything Cher doing Alfie Davison - Love Is A Serious Business Or am I only allowed to use my imagination? OOPS - just read the thread title Anyway, halfway there with 1 and 2 - both ridiculous IMO, and someone tried to tell me 3 is a cover up and actually is Cher.

" TBD " can truly be labelled as a " pub singer's song " as Solomon King ( real name Allen Levy ) toured extensively in the U.K. touring the clubs , following the chart success of his record " She Wears My Ring " ..... At the time of the success of " SWMR " , if SK was to conduct a TV interview , he was made to sit down to do it because of his 6'8" height ...... This aside , if this post - which I briefly broached the subject of pop singers doing soul tunes a while ago , is to be done , please may it be done firmly TIC ..... Malc Burton
Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted October 14, 2007 Posted October 14, 2007 OK then, in keeping with the spirit of what the thread's supposed to be about, here's a few suggestions: James Blunt - Psychedelic Soul Katie Melua - Just Say You're Wanted (And Needed) Westlife - Inky Dinky Wang Dang Doo The Pussycat Dolls - Gone With The Wind Is My Love Kanye West - That Beatin' Rhythm Coldplay - Do I Love You (Indeed I Do) Radiohead - I'm Gone... ...I'm gone, too....

Richard Posted October 14, 2007 Posted October 14, 2007 I always fancied hearing Dick Van Dyke singing Long After Tonight Is All Over
Richard Posted October 14, 2007 Posted October 14, 2007 Or how about Michael Barrymore doing Come On And Stop. That'd get me moving
Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted October 14, 2007 Posted October 14, 2007 I always fancied hearing Dick Van Dyke singing Long After Tonight Is All Over ...using his 'Bert The Chimneysweep' voice, I hope!
Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted October 14, 2007 Posted October 14, 2007 Or how about Michael Barrymore doing Come On And Stop. That'd get me moving ...who couldn't go for the Krankies doing "I've Got Something Good" or "Let Me Be Your Full Time Groover"?
Guest edsuede Posted October 14, 2007 Posted October 14, 2007 Well, I dont care what u lot say ...I like this, only heard it for the first time a year or two ago..well done Cilla Bazza Totally agree Bazza - great version. I play the Billy Joe Royal version regularly in my sets. A mate spins the Osmonds version of this track at our Beat Club nights - it sounds like it's being sung by the Jackson 5 which fools alot of people! - must be Donny on lead vocals! Can anyone give me more details on the Cilla track - I want a copy! On a related thread, the Peters and Lee version of Mel Torme's 'I'm Comin' Home' is worth a listen - nothing to do with soul, lots to do with 'lounge' but fits in great in a mod set!!! Anyway, must go now, I've spotted a man in a wide brim hat and mack outside my house...suspect it's the soul police come to get me!!
Richard Posted October 14, 2007 Posted October 14, 2007 ...using his 'Bert The Chimneysweep' voice, I hope! Oh Yes

The Alfie Davison tune is actually done by Grace Kennedy - just think "Seaside Special" cabaret singer & you'll get the picture. Love to hear Julian Clary doing "Cool Off"
Supercorsa Posted October 14, 2007 Posted October 14, 2007 What about Paul Weller doing a ridiculous version off If I Could Only Be Sure?
Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted October 14, 2007 Posted October 14, 2007 What about Paul Weller doing a ridiculous version off If I Could Only Be Sure? ...or his old group the Jam doing a version of "So Is The Sun" and calling it "Trans Global Unity Express". Surely that would never happen either

Guest Paul Posted October 14, 2007 Posted October 14, 2007 Paul, no it was just a solo part in the song Thanks Richard, For an awful moment I thought the group had split up. That would have been devastating. Paul Mooney
Soulgrit Posted October 14, 2007 Posted October 14, 2007 Well, I dont care what u lot say ...I like this, only heard it for the first time a year or two ago..well done Cilla Bazza Ruby Winters done the original in the 60's. I prefer Ruby. Willie
Guest WPaulVanDyk Posted October 14, 2007 Posted October 14, 2007 Mental As Anything doing a whole Northern album. They are a Aussie rock band of the 80's and 90's and had already covered Just Like Romeo and Juliet and a clip is on you tube. but funny ideas how about Crazy Frog goes Northern - The Snake The Cheeky Girls - Out On The Floor it sounds funny to imagine Shakin Stevens has already covered soul tracks like Feel The Need In Me and Come See About Me
Guest Posted October 14, 2007 Posted October 14, 2007 Ruby Winters done the original in the 60's. I prefer Ruby. Willie Not the same record, and Cilla is about 65 and on the same album a great version of "try to understand" and a stonkin`version of "tossin`an turnin`"and another belter what i`ve forgot.so there

Oh, and Arthur Alexander's "A Shot Of Rhythm And Blues", which sounds a bit like a definitive 'Imaginary Ridiculous Version' until you remember how many beat groups Cilla would have heard covering it down the Cavern. In the 70s she also covered Valerie Simpson on "Silly Wasn't I"... BTW, I'm pretty sure that the original of "Yo Yo" was R.B. Hudman's version on A & M. I believe that Joe South wrote it especially for the youthful R.B.

Minor hit for the Osmonds.
Billy Freemantle Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 'Just like a Yo yo' is at least as good as Paul Anka that so many people seem to rate. And it doesn't have the Trumpet Voluntary bits.
Simsy Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Robson & Jerome - I'll Try. Ant & Dec - Just do the best you can. Aled Jones - Tear stained face. Will Young - Try my love.
Richard Bayley Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 I've never heard the Kylie version of "Time Will Pass You By"....... is it any good? Anyone for Robbie Williams.... "The Panic is On"
