I have been to a party tonight of a family member from the wifes side of the family and i had to endure 4 hours of music that had me craving to get home put on a cd and get a fix of soul,

50 cent, rick astley, gewn steffani, pink, and loads of other crap that had me looking at the clock all night wishing the time away,

its been a couple of years sinse i last had to do that and its gave me a nice little reminder of just what music we all share and love and how much it means to me,

thank fook for soul

and long may it continue

they was playing some really bad jabba jabba music (r&b i was informed by my daughter) and it was going through my head like a hammer drill and it started to actually give me a bit of a head ache so i said to the missus "dont this crap give you a head ache this bloody loud" she replied "yeah i got a bit of a headache but i dont mind music loud anyway" thats it i said, you moan at me when i play mine not even a quarter of this volume at home and go on about the fact you have a headache but when its your family its ok to play music loud even though you just said you got a bit of a headache, from now on i said when you moan my music is too loud cos you got a headache im going to tell you to **** off and what do you have to say to that then she replied, thing is your music is shite

We attended a similar night recently , but thankfully , the MC - he told us over the mic when he started , that he was " our master of ceremonies , not a DJ " , played some Motown , namely " ITSOS " , " TOHOM " , " HMHSY " , TFLH " , " " JM " and " MG " , plus The Drifters " KOTBROTM " ......

Not cosmic , but an auditory oasis amongst his choices for our entertainmant .......

Be thankful regarding your night : It could have been worse ......

They could have had karaoke ......

I went to a friends wedding in the south west last saturday. I can honestly say it was the worst disco I have ever heard.

Some of the girls on the table I was on asked for some Motown, cos they liked "dancing to it". So the DJ played two Supremes records

No soul was played at all, and in the end I went and had a look at his screen to see what he hadon his laptop - looking for something cheesy like "Ain't no mountain" - and guess what he didn't even have that. No Philly at all. Truly dreadful - so I just kept drinking beer

Where I grew up, I never felt lucky. I felt abnormal - and it's still hard to describe why you can't go to the trendy pub/disco with your family friends or work colleagues. The work's Christmas Party always proved difficult too (er sorry, but I don't dance). I can't even spend too long in a shop that plays dreadful house or pop music - my head starts pounding and my skin starts crawling. (My hearing gets worse each year, so maybe it won't be a problem in later life.)

One of my closest friends back home used to love our radio show and then started taking me to the symphony (certain appropriate concerts), as she recognised the music similarity. Now that really was soulful!

Lots of other music styles can also overlap - jazz, latin, even 'funk'

...but waiting for cheesy motown in desperation at the next wedding I go to, just isn't my bag.

Not really

...it's an illness, where constant medication of good soul music merely controls the symptons - but will never cure you!

Number of do's I've been to where just stand there thinking just play one decent song/record and I'll go home happy, but it never happens does it !

I don't even bother, as a last resort, asking em if they can "play a bit of Motown" anymore because you know it's gonna be "Baby Love" or "Tears Of A Clown"

Heard some quite decent music in a clothes shop today, suddenly the shop assistant decided to change and play "Dire Straits" totally changed the mood of the shop, made me want to get out as quickly as possible, I asked who the last song was by and the guy said "Beverley Knight", not ever bought her music before but it sounded quite good.

BEARSY.. id say ..Its just like winning the first prize in the lottery of life.. ENJOY!

Thats my problem now Nick i enjoy it so much nothing else will do

i have learnt a valuble lesson now though and that is make any kind of excuse not to go to anything like that again or if my hand is forced then i shall take a cd with me and demand that at least one from that CD gets played or i will set off the fire alarm

and to think only a few years ago it never bothered me and i probably would of even enjoyed some of them

I've taken to taking a CD of my own on such occasions and more often than not the DJ has played a few that I have asked for.

If they are not too obscure for the average party goer and have a Motown feel/sound then folks usually keep dancing especially if they are mixed in with sh*te such as Jimmy Mack and Third Finger.

I can usually get the likes of In My Lonely Room; I Got A Feeling; Open The Door To Your Heart and Love Runs Out, played.

The Gary Glitter Fan thinks I'm a sad bas*ard as I have now taken to giving them points for their efforts before I accost and mither them!!

Its defo the way forward Drew and something i will defo be doing if i ever have to got through that ordeal ever again, im dreading my 2 daughters weddings and im having nightmares already about them thing is they are only 14 & 11 will take me ipod too incase the dj refuses so i can do me on thang

We was at Tonis cousins wedding a couple of months ago. My God, I've had more fun at the dentist. Until one of the kids went up and asked the CJ (computer jockey!) if he had any Edwin Starr, and fair play, he put on Contact, then Happy radio (sounded just like my set in fact!) so it had to be done, Toni and me gave all the party goers a dancing lesson - there was just the two of us, and our girls giving it large on the dance floor and everyone standing there open mouthed, in disbelief. The jock carried on with Candi Staton, and a couple more people joined us on the floor, then he mixed it into Ma Baker (Boney M, I think) so we went home!
