It's "Soul Source", not "SKA Source" can we not fill up valuable space to posts which should best be served on a site for ska lovers, don't mean to offend anyone but, it's not an interest of mine, or if it's open season am I allowed to make endless posts of stuff I like?

Not my thing either Tony but I guess because one or two venues are featuring Ska in their specialist rooms then it does have some interest to some people here on Soul Source, as with all the threads if they don't interest me then I simply don't read them, plenty of other stuff that keeps this site fresh, interesting and enjoyable.

If you're clicking on 'new posts' then it'll showloads of ska posts because I've just edited about 30, thats why theres so many

is that the bulk of that done Pete

what can do if gonna be more is take the forum off the "new posts" till it settlles down a bit

I love Northern (and I mean 60s cos I don't class anything else as northern) but I also like some RnB, SKA and Reggae, all be it to a lesser extent so I do not have much to listen to at home, it's nice and refreshing to be able to listen to some of it now and again and anything is better than some of the "disco" or "modern" that some of you like to go on about.

If I went to a do where there were three room, Northern, Modern or SKA/Raggae you wouldn't see me in the modern room unless my life depended on it. For example at the last Rocket all nighter, there were three rooms, Northern, RnB and SKA/Reggae and it was a nice change to spend most of the night listening to the SKA/Reggae for a change instead of that infernal Disco that people seem to think they have to play these days.

But if I am at a one room event I certainly don't moan if there is a certain amount of modern played cos you have to cater for all tastes on this scene which has become more diverse recently than ever before. If we had all single genre events the numbers would be so thin on the ground nowhere would ever survive. Plus I have many friends who I have met through the scene that prefer modern so we all get to mix in one big "melting pot" so to speak and would never of met otherwise.

"some great soul/ska stuff" sorry to offend and take up valuable space that should be reserved for soul lovers only, in the same way should we not include any blue eyed garage, pop, folk, country et al,

some great ska reggae stuff is crossed over onto the northern scene the same way as some "lift" "night club lounge" "easy listening" "country"stuff is played across the scene,

please moderator, with no more jerry naylor, benny troy, jimmy cliff, pete smith and his fantastic input , jackie edwards, the hoop, wouldnt the scene or the forum be better no.gif just thought some soul lovers might appreciate the nod that they may hear "some great soul/ ska"stuff via a shopping trip to asda

new thread "soulfull ska" or as it already been done unsure.gif

Nothing wrong with your post whatsoever Cod, it was all the ones I did, don't worryabout it - people will definitely be interested in the info you mentioned

If it wasn't for my love of Jamaican music I'd never have become a Northern Soul lover at all.

There was a tune called "Queen Majesty" written by a C.Mayfield. As a young 20 something reggae lover I was intrigued as I'd never heard of Curtis Mayfield. I bought a double CD of his on MCA called the Anthology 1961-77, asked for similar stuff - the bloke in the record shop said "you wanna try Major Lance or Gene Chandler mate" and the rest is history.

Loads of people love soul as well as reggae, the Jamaicans love their soul - hence all the covers of soul tunes.

With all respect I disagree this site is "Soul Source" and since the start has been been a site dedicated to Northern Soul and its modern variation, I won't comment on where you grew up or where you went, but, for me the allnighter scene meant I didn't have to listen to reggae or funk, I don't have to be diplomatic about this, otherwise the last 29 years would've been wasted.

Sorry, but thats total bollox, the modern variation as you call it, is "disco" to many of us and has nothing to do with NS but we have to endure thread after thread about it i.e. a whole thread devoted to Travares. If modern is acceptable then so should SKA/Reggae be, as they are far more to do with NS soul music as is RnB and probably beach music and doo wop, than moderrrrrrrrrn will ever be. I certainly don't advocate banning "modern" I just choose not to read the threads about it

I am not trying to do the you are only in your early 40s thing and us oldies know best but, I know that when I first got into NS in about 1972/73until about 75 SKA/Reggae were the fringe to the scene not bloody disco frusty2.gif

ANd don't bother coming back with the "move on" angle or the "played out oldies" thing, I have respect for the "oldies" but don't want to hear them anymore than I want to hear "disco" when I am out but I am prepared to tolerate it for an hour or so at a one room event because I respect other peoples tastes for derivation from the key focus of the scene which IMHO is and should rightly be 60s raw soul with the a beat that makes chills run down your spine and make your feet move.

Cool down folks, we have a great little sub-forum going and I have no complaints if people don't want new posts showing up in the northern sections, I think maybe some took Tony's post the wrong way maybe? I am heartened by the support forthe ska forum as well though, don't get me wrong, but it shouldn't dominate the soul sections. Chrissie you made some good points re modern and disco though...

They used to be called The Trevores, then Trevor left

Strangely enough they used to be called Chubby & The Turnpikes - The Tavares that is.

Which I assume are acceptable to discuss on Soul Source.

my 2p worth if it means anything,

I do like a bit of ska but i agree not on soul source, its a site for Soul, i dont care if its deep soul, modern, disco, northern, beach, doo woop etc etc cos they all come under the banner of soul (sort of)

If i said to my mate who is a fanatical ska man that i should play some northern at his ska doo he would politley kick me in the bolox, they aint related at all imho,

go to a web site that specialises in ska and start posting northern soul up on it and see what reply you would get ohmy.gif

say what you want i dont care cos thats my honest opinion tongue.gif

Bearsy , much of the ska/reggae...stuff has far for soul in it than a lot of stuff that is portrayed as Soul, apart from that ,as Ive said before ,it was at the very heart of this scene of hours in the early days of club soul......now modern soul ....that should have its own Forum laugh.gif

I cant argue with any of that Bazza as im far too young to remember the good old early days of northern wicked.gif but yes disco should have its own place i thinks in the bin with r&b :P

Yes! Yes and put half a pint of Whisky in mine to drown out that Ska.

I have only heard some Ska tunes uploaded (avoided any threads like the plague)

I agree its Soul not Ska Source, but if a small room is put aside for such things I am sure it wont be any bother to me.

More R&B wouldn't hurt any body and it puts hairs on you chest.

Exactly. We have a little corner ofthe forum put aside for us and we don't want to invade the main forum. It was simply because a huge block of new posts came up at the same time and made it look like the forum had become Ska Source. Could I just also point out that in the Soul Of Jamaica forum there is a Jamaican Soul / R&B subsection which many people may well enjoy.
