And of course Snaith. Sam and Arthur tried a couple of venues in Sheffield, Turn Ups (The old Nether Edge Hall for locals) and Take Two down Attercliffe. Somewhere else as well but can't remember where.

Yeah I think first part of 1981 , well thats what Robin had on the tapes .. all mangled now angry.gif

The tapes are fine Simon - not mangled at all? - First Brum Locarno is dated as 23/3/81 - Arthur/Sam/Mario - History in the making....

Memorable all nighters at Rebels (I came up from the south) with Richard, Sam, Arthur, Mannion etc. Gary Rushbrooke was the "token" 60s DJ - on about 7 am as I recall.

I've got a Rebels tape "1st All Niter" - 21/11/81 - Richard,Arthur and a couple of bits from Steve Mannion...it always seemed to snow when rebels was on!

when I retire maybe!

Chalky will do em .. hes got some new tape to harddisk gear ..You'll be playing golf when u retire .btw Martin must have his bus pass by now smile.gif

Forget th weather Robin. What about the hike up the stairs

I went into the building with a client six/seven years ago (i think) years ago. It had been shut for ages, and we had to wear safety gear and sign a disclaimer for any resulting "health problems". Halfway up the stairs, hundreds, and I mean hundreds of pigeons started flying around. It was infested with the flying rats. (Mind you, it was a sh*thole in 1981 laugh.gif )

We shouldn't forget the RITZ all dayers in the 70's either, loads of new release soul and disco played.

maybe as said they prefer to hear Modern which might be underplayed. maybe some of the modern room DJ's play what they know is gonna win same as Northern tunes but disco just gets to me i like it but to hear it played out.

I heard Dave Forrest playing Ain't No Stopping Us Now and said doing well on the Modern scene lately my reaction was my god this so disco dosen't seem Modern.

i like and prefer nights that have all music played so you can hear straight forward Northern, little modern, crossover, R & B etc and Modern music to me is more mid 70's that's when i feel a lot of it started not as early as i hear of records being made and classed as Northern

Yeah well its more modern than the 60's stuff

At the Frankfurt weekender, the Modern Room is far from being empty ! I have only been to the Koln weekender and the Aachen weekender and the Modern Rooms were not empty... so i'm a bit surprized by this assumption.

Wow , this thread has well over 3000 views , and Helen was really asking for more R&R rooms :Dlaugh.gif

Well Simon RnB rooms actually as i think Modern rooms are where you go for R&R!!

I've really enjoyed reading this thread and there have been some excellent discussions and topics brought up.

Not many people have expressed a desire for RnB rooms tho so maybe better Modern rooms are whats required, so an event is seen as a two room do rather than a Northern/oldies do with a Modern room tacked on the side.

Sheffield Romeo and Juliets? Baileys whatever it was called had a Modern Room before 83 Mark. At the Sunday all dayers. I remember DJing there with Sam and Arthur. Around 82ish I think. Oldies in the main room.

romeo and juliets memories come back of going up the m1 in my mk 3 cortina ! .... one room was 70's ( as modern was called then ) and the other room was funk not oldies ?...... can anyone remember the venue at shrewsbury ? what was it called ...had a dayer there about the same time as rommeo and juliets was going ......

Hi all, just back from prestatyn weekender, and the so called other room, modern room, crossover room, 70s,80s,poss 90s room, was NOT full. why is this, you may ask, then again this was a Legengs northern, motown weekend... Lucky for me i like all the formats.. havin started out on the safe old northern scene, back in the day.. etc. And went along the route of, wigan, mecca, cleethorpes.. + local nites at notts, leic (where i live) ST.ives, sam,s sheffield... etc, then a bit of a change, the dare i say it Jazz Funk scene, inc, the real blue note stuff.. Then going back to the scene late 80s,9o,s leic all nighters at the Oddfellows, thanks to ally.. which is where i first (for me) met my real modern soul crowd... and room ? and i loved it, what a change, and the room was FULL. then again around this time most modern, crossover events where. so what as changed ? apart from that crowd movin on and droppin out. gettin old, etc. Lucky for me i can still dance, and love all the stuff which is played, inc, bit of the r & b.. Gettin back to your orig quest Hellen, i dont know , ha. For me i dont mind the northern room, playin some modern ,crossover, 70s,80s, even soulful house, garage, what ever people will name it.. so long as it is GOOD. all for now, mart

Oak Hotel at Shrewsbury - ran by the Shrewsbury Collective. Pip was the only one I knew..Richard and Sam guested - I went a couple of times - a long way from Loughborough on a Friday night for a Soul Nite! The record that always reminds me of this cracking small venue is Jean Carn "No, No, you can't come back now" which was a bit of an anthem.

The 'Modern crowd' has no problem with 60's soul. Only the reverse

this makes rather good sense of this debate dave!

carry on up the modern, disco , garage and northern kyber pass

If you find your answer Helen, share it with me!. biggrin.gif

I've been watching both RnB rooms and modern rooms for the last few years and I believe RnB rooms have died off a touch quicker but there isn't much in it and its still changing. We have two rooms at Bury and We alternate and have both modern and RnB on a bi-monthly basis.

I honestly can't tell much of a difference between the numbers that either genre pull in.
