i bidded on this on ebay yesterday - didn't win it cos i didn't go as high as i might have done cos my instincts tell me it's a pressing

isn't there a story about this that it was never a proper issue, but pressed up cos of the popularity of tow away zone or something?

i'm sure i remember someone telling me there's two different versions also?

does anyone know for sure?

There has been much discussion about this on here - different intros, different colours - but I can state categorically the person who was responsible for the copy you bid on was the label owner - Deke Deberry. It is identical to my copy which came direct from him - a friend of mine Mike Charlton spoke to him personnaly (Ian Levine posted his contact details in his old Black Music column) and obtained five copies plus one of 'Tow Away Zone' (which I got too !!). So that makes it a real record to me - and a fantastic one to boot

bugger! i would have gone higher if i'd known it was genuine cos i really want a copy of this anyone got one for sale?

one of the main things that put me off was the white backgound colour on the label (ie: rather than silver) which seemed to me typical of a 70s pressing (where costs were obviously cut on the printing or the original colours didn't come out on the 'photostat') - is yours purple and white mike?

There are purple and white demos Mike. i've got one. Some says its real, some say not. The bloke who sold it me says its kosher though

There is an issue which is definately white rather than silver and I seem to remember the sound quality being poor. If I can find it, I'll post a scan.

no, it is white mike cos i asked the seller to confirm - therefore i presume that yours is silver?

Was booted on the purple and silver label - but the silver print quality is shocking - you can barely make out the label.

Purple and White demo's are contentious to say the least - but about 60% of people who I've spoken to reckon its kosher.... it's usually them without a copy that says it ain't....

so purple and silver issues with good silver print are probably the best bet then?

the more i look at the scan the more certain i am that it's a pressing

if you look between the lettering creative funk you can see light speckles of purple which showed through the silver print (i've just had a look at my purple and silver copy of tow away zone and that's the same) on the record it was copied from (as i understand it, 70s bootleggers often actually photocopied the label of an original to get their mastercopy)

as a matter of common sense, if someone had wanted to make a purple and white demo they would have printed the purple onto a white label and it would look completely different

that's my view anyway

The purple and white promo is not a photocopy of the issue shown above - the text at the bottom of the label isn't in the same place - the engineers name comes further across on the P&W demo.

this one definitely looks real to me - i'd stake my reputation on it (LOL!)

any chance of a scan steveM ive never seen this, i collect creative funk and have never seen a red/white promo of any release except i have a black/white promo of creative funk 12000 but thats a bell distributed copy picked up by bell [after the regular creative funk release] i think possibly that never came out as i cant recall seeing a bell stock copy

if i'm right and the ones with the white background are 70's pressings, i'd guess they're likely to be pressed on lightweight vinyl with glued on paper labels

to my knowledge, creative funk originals have them kinda lables that almost look like they're painted on and i'd anticipate it would be pressed in styrene......but i might be completely wrong, just trusting my instincts like the ones which told me the record on ebay wasn't quite right

doesn't seem that anyone knows for sure, so you have to try to make educated guesses

The P&W demo is vinyl - moulded over label.

is the spoken intro version, and the ordinary version the same label number??.In other words you don't know until you play it??

its true i was thinking that earlier its a lot of labels for a company that had no money,

you heard it only once at wigan ,youd have heard it a lot at the mecca

as for deek not satisfying demand i wrote to him in 76 and he wrote me back in april, i still have the letter, the reason he didnt was because of the crystal deal it began ....'as you know weve had problems with bootleggers in your country, therefore we no longer mail our products to anyone, however you may write to the crystal label, they are the distributers in your area'.........

I was aware it was played at the Mecca - perhaps that's why I liked it I was merely suggesting out that there was not the 'critical mass'' to warrant several lots of bootlegs and perhaps it was Deke producing several versions/small pressing runs to satisfy the demand.

Sorry to revive this old thread...

I have a mint minus copy which I am thinking about selling. Purple and silver label, thick vinyl, printing crisp as a f*ck. It's also a demo.

12006 on one run out and looks likes 12066 on the other. Also mine has 'Gary Powell' in the run out then a tiny stamp that I can't decipher.

Other thing - it has 'PROMOTION COPY NOT FOR SALE' and the typeface / phrase just makes me think 'British' ..like something on Decca or something.

Anyway, if it is worth less than twenty quid can't be arsed selling it anyway!
