Guest woolie mark Posted October 8, 2007 Posted October 8, 2007 i bidded on this on ebay yesterday - didn't win it cos i didn't go as high as i might have done cos my instincts tell me it's a pressing isn't there a story about this that it was never a proper issue, but pressed up cos of the popularity of tow away zone or something? i'm sure i remember someone telling me there's two different versions also? does anyone know for sure?

There has been much discussion about this on here - different intros, different colours - but I can state categorically the person who was responsible for the copy you bid on was the label owner - Deke Deberry. It is identical to my copy which came direct from him - a friend of mine Mike Charlton spoke to him personnaly (Ian Levine posted his contact details in his old Black Music column) and obtained five copies plus one of 'Tow Away Zone' (which I got too !!). So that makes it a real record to me - and a fantastic one to boot Mike Edited October 8, 2007 by Mike Lofthouse 1
Tomangoes Posted October 8, 2007 Posted October 8, 2007 Make sure you also get the Sweet wine, music, and my imagination record. Ed

I think it was a genuine copy. Good luck finding one Mike

If I can find it, I'll post a scan. Best regards, Paul

Good luck finding one Mike no, it is white mike cos i asked the seller to confirm - therefore i presume that yours is silver? phew, looks like my suspicions were right then and it is a pressing someone paid $91 for it
pikeys dog Posted October 8, 2007 Posted October 8, 2007 Was booted on the purple and silver label - but the silver print quality is shocking - you can barely make out the label. Purple and White demo's are contentious to say the least - but about 60% of people who I've spoken to reckon its kosher.... it's usually them without a copy that says it ain't....

Guest woolie mark Posted October 8, 2007 Posted October 8, 2007 (edited) the more i look at the scan the more certain i am that it's a pressing if you look between the lettering creative funk you can see light speckles of purple which showed through the silver print (i've just had a look at my purple and silver copy of tow away zone and that's the same) on the record it was copied from (as i understand it, 70s bootleggers often actually photocopied the label of an original to get their mastercopy) as a matter of common sense, if someone had wanted to make a purple and white demo they would have printed the purple onto a white label and it would look completely different that's my view anyway Edited October 8, 2007 by woolie mark
Guest Fredrik Posted October 8, 2007 Posted October 8, 2007 My issue copy looks like this. It plays the conga & spoken intro version which some people say is rarer (definitely better IMO ). The instro side however plays the other version.
pikeys dog Posted October 8, 2007 Posted October 8, 2007 (as i understand it, 70s bootleggers often actually photocopied the label of an original to get their mastercopy) The purple and white promo is not a photocopy of the issue shown above - the text at the bottom of the label isn't in the same place - the engineers name comes further across on the P&W demo.
sepia Posted October 8, 2007 Posted October 8, 2007 I GOT MY COPY OFF PAT BRADY @ CLEETHORPES 3 YEAR AGO FOR £20. SPOKEN INTRO,NICE CLEAN MINT COPY,STRONG PURPLE & SILVER LABEL. MY M8 GOT A COPY OFF SOMEONE,BUT SENT IT BACK CAUSE IT DIDNT LOOK RIGHT. JUST LOOKED ALL OVER POOR QUALITY,MORE WHITE THAN SILVER ON THE LABEL. THE STORY I HEARD WAS LEVINE MET LABEL OWNER(OR PRODUCER) & SAID TOW AWAY ZONE WENT DOWN WELL ON SCENE & ASKED IF HE COULD DO SOMETHING ELSE FOR THE SCENE?.

The bloke who sold it me says its kosher though any chance of a scan steveM ive never seen this, i collect creative funk and have never seen a red/white promo of any release except i have a black/white promo of creative funk 12000 but thats a bell distributed copy picked up by bell [after the regular creative funk release] i think possibly that never came out as i cant recall seeing a bell stock copy

KevH Posted October 8, 2007 Posted October 8, 2007 is the spoken intro version, and the ordinary version the same label number??.In other words you don't know until you play it??
Ric-tic Posted October 8, 2007 Posted October 8, 2007 is the spoken intro version, and the ordinary version the same label number??.In other words you don't know until you play it?? yes same label number but the spoken intro also exists on a red and silver label here the bell release i mentioned earlier
Mike Lofthouse Posted October 8, 2007 Posted October 8, 2007 maybe they're all genuine, don't spose we'll ever know I think you might have something there, so far we have had - Purple & White demo Purple & silver demo Purple & white issue Purple & silver issue Red & white demo/issue ? alternative spoken intro demo/issue ? Christ it was not that popular - think I only heard it once at Wigan Suspect the label owner was responsible for most of them - he was well aware of the Northern scene and did speak to Levine before it ever came out - can't believe he did not meet the demand himself and that it was worthwhile for bootleggers to make that many different pressings Incidently - I'm not that familiar with the spoken intro version - but it is real nice mix, very prominent horns and background vocals missing from the original - has quite a contempory sound like a a Mark Ronson re-mix Still like the original intro best though! Mike

Mike its true i was thinking that earlier its a lot of labels for a company that had no money, you heard it only once at wigan ,youd have heard it a lot at the mecca as for deek not satisfying demand i wrote to him in 76 and he wrote me back in april, i still have the letter, the reason he didnt was because of the crystal deal it began ....'as you know weve had problems with bootleggers in your country, therefore we no longer mail our products to anyone, however you may write to the crystal label, they are the distributers in your area'......... and i thought bootleggers? ive never seen a creative funk bootleg

Mike Lofthouse Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 it was popular at the Mecca though, instru and vocal I was aware it was played at the Mecca - perhaps that's why I liked it I was merely suggesting out that there was not the 'critical mass'' to warrant several lots of bootlegs and perhaps it was Deke producing several versions/small pressing runs to satisfy the demand. Mike

Guest son of stan Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 (edited) Hi Sorry to revive this old thread... I have a mint minus copy which I am thinking about selling. Purple and silver label, thick vinyl, printing crisp as a f*ck. It's also a demo. 12006 on one run out and looks likes 12066 on the other. Also mine has 'Gary Powell' in the run out then a tiny stamp that I can't decipher. Other thing - it has 'PROMOTION COPY NOT FOR SALE' and the typeface / phrase just makes me think 'British' ..like something on Decca or something. Anyway, if it is worth less than twenty quid can't be arsed selling it anyway! Edited February 7, 2015 by pikeys dog Swearing.

Guest son of stan Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 (edited) If i have followed the above correctly how the f*ck is it a boot? Is there an original no one has ever seen? Edited February 7, 2015 by pikeys dog swearing - workplace filters
Mike Lofthouse Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 did it come out on british crystal ? No - 'Towaway Zone' did..
