Citizen P Posted October 2, 2007 Posted October 2, 2007 I'd suggest Ian Clark at Yate Try again... I have a B&S with an ad for Va-Va's with some tunes listed and The Star -Treks is one. So Mr.Searling 1973, any advance? Tony

Guest Johnny Mack Posted October 2, 2007 Posted October 2, 2007 I can remember hounding Snowy from Doncaster to sell me his copy of this record back in about 1974. Having said that, I can't be certain he was the first DJ to play it. Star-Treks is another one of those lesser known Veep records that's been kicking around for ages, along with Johnny Dunn, John Thomas, Baby Washington and Zena Foster. Richard Searling used to play a number of these lesser known Veep 45's at the Va Va in Bolton which closed at the same time the Casino opened, but I cant remember Star-Treks ever being played at the Va Va. Hope this helps............................. Anybody prepared to offer up who first introduced this sublime piece of music to the masses and when?

I bought my copy from Mick Cooke to play, If I remember rightly, on this occasion, John Philips had first call on it from Mick, but John agreed to sell it on to me. and Mick already had the record a few Months at that point he used to Travel to The Torch, Wigan and Various other Venues He would call at our house with his latest purchases. I would assume he bought it possibly Va-Va's He had some Top Sounds for the day, normally before I had even heard of them. I know of two Snowys from the Doncaster Area it's the Snowy I think you mean he played records at the Drum too. "Gonna Need Magic" was a popular play there. Edited October 2, 2007 by 45cellar 1

Hi Roger, My copy is slightly different? were they all on styrene?
45cellar Posted October 3, 2007 Posted October 3, 2007 (edited) Hi Roger, My copy is slightly different? were they all on styrene? Hi Pete Studying your scan I'm guessing that your copy is Styrene. I will check my Veep stuff, I believe that the Majority are on Styrene and I have seen the slightly different Label Design as yours for another Number V-1297 The only thing as far as "Gonna Need Magic" is concerned I haven't seen a Stock Copy. I have a couple of V-1254 DEMO's the second copy I bought from Soul Bowl the same design as my scan above The record has always been a favourite of mine. There was mainly two designs for Veep the one below, came out on both There is the Veep design with a red circle around the outside of the label. (Not sure which numbers came out with the red circle) The DEMO below has the same Design as your copy regarding the placing of the Promotion Copy Not For Sale We have been trying to complete certain labels by scan on Hitsville Soul Club of America & Veep is one of them. I had already scanned them for that. All Information such as your DEMO is Invaluable. Edited October 3, 2007 by 45cellar
Jerry Hipkiss Posted October 3, 2007 Posted October 3, 2007 The only thing as far as "Gonna Need Magic" is concerned I haven't seen a Stock Copy. Has anyone? I've been told several times that they don't exist?
45cellar Posted October 3, 2007 Posted October 3, 2007 (edited) Has anyone? I've been told several times that they don't exist? As time goes by I don't think that they do exist. The number before is the wonderful Cindy Scott, Virtually Impossible on a Stock Copy but at least we have seen a scan. So far nothing for The Star-Treks on Stock Copy. Citizen P Posted October 3, 2007 Posted October 3, 2007 I know it's been mentioned before, but can any one confirm that this fab tune is in fact our very own Dusty Springfield on vocals? ATB Tony
Chalky Posted October 3, 2007 Posted October 3, 2007 I know it's been mentioned before, but can any one confirm that this fab tune is in fact our very own Dusty Springfield on vocals? ATB Tony Doubt it very much IMHO. Be very surprised it it was.
Citizen P Posted October 3, 2007 Posted October 3, 2007 Doubt it very much IMHO. Be very surprised it it was. Well, now that I've planted the seed, take another listen--especially at maybe -2 or 3 Tony
Chalky Posted October 3, 2007 Posted October 3, 2007 Well, now that I've planted the seed, take another listen--especially at maybe -2 or 3 Tony I've listened 4 times as of yet not to mention the 100's of times when I had the record and never once thought it her. The slower/faster I play it the more convinced I am it ain't her.
Mr Soul Posted October 3, 2007 Posted October 3, 2007 RICHARD SEARLING CIRCA 73 VA.VA'S REMEMBER IT WELL WOODY
Briles Posted October 3, 2007 Posted October 3, 2007 Well, now that I've planted the seed, take another listen--especially at maybe -2 or 3 Tony I don't think it's Dusty, haven't tampered with speeds though. Similar sounding voice must admit, and a great voice, but deeper than Dusty. Also similar flaws that that somtimes slightly of key, which I dont mind personally. For me Dusty was great, so is this, whoever it is. Love it, thanks for the thread. Best Dave

Best Dave I think that it has a similar sound to Dusty, as I have already stated I have Always Loved the record, The question that still remains unanswered is who were they, as nobody appears to know. Did they record under other names, or simply the one off session that resulted in such a great record. Plus, the Promotion Copies can't have captured enough attention first time around as we don't have a Stock Copy. ............. Yet. Edited October 4, 2007 by 45cellar
Guest Posted October 4, 2007 Posted October 4, 2007 it's one of my favorite records but i never thought about Dusty singing it, but if you close your eyes, maybe, either way i still love it.
Geordiejohnson Posted October 7, 2007 Posted October 7, 2007 Have seen a Flyer for the portcullis in Barnsley back in 1976 with a photo stat of the startrek's on it, I git three off JM in 2005 for £50 a pop gave one away for a birthday prezzie to Gary Buckley who had always wanted it, sold one for £125 a month later and sold me other last year for £150, nice tune, See there are bargains to be had from JM Geeooordie
Geordiejohnson Posted October 7, 2007 Posted October 7, 2007 Oops forgot to put, when i bought my three all demos, JM had sold an issue the day before he told me. Geeooooordie
Guest topcatnumpty1 Posted October 7, 2007 Posted October 7, 2007 Dusty on vocals---no never--as regards the group ,i believe there is a picture of them in The book--"The in Crowd"--can,t check (as i,ve lent the book out).Ido remember that "Gonna Need Magic" was always thought of as an Early Levine find that found it,s way to Richard in mid 73 --which would tie in with it being played at Bolton Va-Va-s, Regards Tony Coleby.
LittleAv Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 I've pulled up an old thread, wondering if anyone can confirm who the lead singer of Star-Treks is please? Definately distinct Dusty sounding vocals. Thanks Av
boba Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 not answering your question, but here is a stock copy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76Sdet6XutE
boba Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 sorry, on a quick read the "promotional copy not for sale" text on it read to me like "non promotional copy for sale to regular record buyers"... sorry. 1
Floyd Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 I'd suggest Ian Clark at Yate Hi Jerry correct , i remember Ian playing this at Yate as well Still sounds great ATB Floyd
45cellar Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 As the Stock Copy either doesn't exist or Virtually Impossible (Small Quantity) Yet to see one even though it features in Price Guides. Wondering if the groups name was a problem, similar to "Batman At The Go-Go" copyright problems.
45cellar Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 It does sound like Dusty. Surely with such a large fan base somebody would know if it was.
Colsoul Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 if thats not dusty how about dolly on ivanhoe ,when the the right one comes along, or is that the singer on the star treks , col

Dave Pinch Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 bought loads off him myself roger..bloody nice bloke. saw him in marks and spencers the other week
Tony A Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 Yes Dave I bought quite a few British from dave `snowy` morgan many years ago. Used to work at Boylands record store in Conisbrough, bought loads from there.
45cellar Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 Yes, the very place. Had about 2 or three suitcases full of UK / British Labels. Beyond the Normal Stock. Selling some to buy a Mini if I remember correctly. Agree Dave, nice bloke.
Rick Cooper Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 (edited) Definitely a Richard Searling discovery. I can still recall him showing me his copy in the usual white card sleeve with his distinctive neat felt pen writing before he started playing it. It may have even been "the best record ever" for a week or so. May have got a play at the Pendulum before Va Va but not sure. The ads he did for Va Va would always include a few exclusives that he would have just got but not gone big. Star-Treks was one of these that never got to be a big floor filler but was highly regarded among collectors. Wasn't booted at the time and always fairly hard to find as no one would want to sell it. It also got plus points for being on Veep which at the time was one of the fashionable labels of the day. Certain labels that had a big record on would result in anything else on the label getting extra scrutiny. Other "in" labels at this time were Port, Uptown, Tower, Compass, Blue Rock and RCA Victor. If Ian Levine had it at the time he didn't play it. Maybe as Richard had got behind it first Ian would not want to play it. Anyway he had hundreds others to play. Never seen it on stock copy, probably went in the crusher. Dusty ? No never heard that one , northern myth? Rick This post was brought to you by "Dave" the home of late and out of date replies........... Edited September 14, 2012 by Rick Cooper

Wondering if the groups name was a problem, similar to "Batman At The Go-Go" copyright problems. Batman at the gogo stock sold well in chicago. If you ever find a copy in the city it's most likely a pink "batman" copy. The promos were just what were imported to the UK and there was no stock left of the original title to export.
Ringleader Posted September 14, 2012 Posted September 14, 2012 (edited) I don't think it's Dusty but it does sound similar....interestingly Dusty recorded all her vocals with the tape slowed down so when it was played back at the right speed her voice sounded higher...she preferred the way her voice sounded like that .....when she performed live she sang everything a semitone lower than the records so she could still hit the high notes Edited September 14, 2012 by Ringleader
