I can remember hounding Snowy from Doncaster to sell me his copy of this record back in about 1974. Having said that, I can't be certain he was the first DJ to play it.

Star-Treks is another one of those lesser known Veep records that's been kicking around for ages, along with Johnny Dunn, John Thomas, Baby Washington and Zena Foster.

Richard Searling used to play a number of these lesser known Veep 45's at the Va Va in Bolton which closed at the same time the Casino opened, but I cant remember Star-Treks ever being played at the Va Va.

Studying your scan I'm guessing that your copy is Styrene.

I will check my Veep stuff, I believe that the Majority are on Styrene

and I have seen the slightly different Label Design as yours for another Number V-1297

The only thing as far as "Gonna Need Magic" is concerned I haven't seen a Stock Copy.

I have a couple of V-1254 DEMO's the second copy I bought from Soul Bowl the same design as my scan above

& Veep is one of them. I had already scanned them for that.

As time goes by I don't think that they do exist.

The number before is the wonderful Cindy Scott, Virtually Impossible on a Stock Copy

but at least we have seen a scan. So far nothing for The Star-Treks on Stock Copy.

I've listened 4 times as of yet not to mention the 100's of times when I had the record and never once thought it her. The slower/faster I play it the more convinced I am it ain't her.

I don't think it's Dusty, haven't tampered with speeds though. Similar sounding voice must admit, and a great voice, but deeper than Dusty. Also similar flaws that that somtimes slightly of key, which I dont mind personally. For me Dusty was great, so is this, whoever it is. Love it, thanks for the thread.

I think that it has a similar sound to Dusty,

as I have already stated I have Always Loved the record,

The question that still remains unanswered is who were they, as nobody appears to know.

Did they record under other names, or simply the one off session that resulted in such a great record.

Plus, the Promotion Copies can't have captured enough attention first time around as we don't have a Stock Copy.

Have seen a Flyer for the portcullis in Barnsley back in 1976 with a photo stat of the startrek's on it,

I git three off JM in 2005 for £50 a pop gave one away for a birthday prezzie to Gary Buckley who had always wanted it, sold one for £125 a month later and sold me other last year for £150, nice tune,

See there are bargains to be had from JM

Dusty on vocals---no never--as regards the group ,i believe there is a picture of them in The book--"The in Crowd"--can,t check (as i,ve lent the book out).Ido remember that "Gonna Need Magic" was always thought of as an Early Levine find that found it,s way to Richard in mid 73 --which would tie in with it being played at Bolton Va-Va-s,

Definitely a Richard Searling discovery. I can still recall him showing me his copy in the usual white card sleeve with his distinctive neat felt pen writing before he started playing it. It may have even been "the best record ever" for a week or so. May have got a play at the Pendulum before Va Va but not sure.

The ads he did for Va Va would always include a few exclusives that he would have just got but not gone big. Star-Treks was one of these that never got to be a big floor filler but was highly regarded among collectors. Wasn't booted at the time and always fairly hard to find as no one would want to sell it.

It also got plus points for being on Veep which at the time was one of the fashionable labels of the day. Certain labels that had a big record on would result in anything else on the label getting extra scrutiny. Other "in" labels at this time were Port, Uptown, Tower, Compass, Blue Rock and RCA Victor.

If Ian Levine had it at the time he didn't play it. Maybe as Richard had got behind it first Ian would not want to play it. Anyway he had hundreds others to play.

Never seen it on stock copy, probably went in the crusher.

Dusty ? No never heard that one , northern myth?

Batman at the gogo stock sold well in chicago. If you ever find a copy in the city it's most likely a pink "batman" copy. The promos were just what were imported to the UK and there was no stock left of the original title to export.

I don't think it's Dusty but it does sound similar....interestingly Dusty recorded all her vocals with the tape slowed down so when it was played back at the right speed her voice sounded higher...she preferred the way her voice sounded like that .....when she performed live she sang everything a semitone lower than the records so she could still hit the high notes
