I'm back for more - version of Al Johnson

I hope you'll be very unhappy without me

Strangers in dark corners - version of Johnny Bristol

Excellent band who suffer on the soul scene due to their chart success - which is a shame.

Yep that one as well, pretty much all their albums have a some outstanding tracks, the rest are pretty good as well. Makes a change from the big ticket 1 or 2 track albums.

Excellent band, done loads of wonderful tunes.

I remember me & Crofty losing a fortune when we put 'em on at Hinckley Lesiure Centre. A douibly memorable night for me that was. A well known member of the scene at the time stuck a pistol in my face in the car park and threatened to kill me. Ah, them were't days smile.gif

The only thing we didn't provide was chicken in a basket :P

Wouldn't have been much demand for it given the chemically "challenged " state of the punters!

I was at Hinkley when Curtis Mayfield was on. Most of the crowd stayed in the other room dancing to Steve Whittle playing oldies while Curtis was on , he was fantastic, err Curtis was not Steve Whittle. laugh.gif

Were Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel and Don't Stop The Music played at the Casino?

Actually wouldn't mind chicken in a basket or something edible at a soul night at about midnight or 1am, always seem to be hungry then.

Yes Richard played "Heaven must be missing an angel" and "It only takes a minute" as new releases at the Casino.

I got a vid of them singing "Minute" from Top of the Pops I think- pretty good, I always liked it as a tune.

Of course we musn't forget their contributions as Chubby & The Turnpikes either thumbup.gif

I also like one of the Victor Tavares solo sides - an early modern spin....Steve

High brow, Low Brow most of me mates would shave yer Eye Brow.. "Heaven Must be Missing an angle"......... ooooooohhhhh love that track!

One of the rare opportunities back in the day to do your stuff at the disco, while Disco Stu did his latest moves some of the Soulies would take to the floor and reign supreme for a few minutes until "Shaddap You Face" came back on.

When I was a boy, just about the eighth-a grade, Mama used to say don't stay out-a late with the bad-a boys, always shoot-a pool, Giuseppe going to flunk-a school. Ah, shaddap-a you face!

Always loved 'Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel' ! Brings back wonderful memories of those hot summers of 75 & 76 !

Got a pile of about 10 singles by Tavares upstairs, they came as a job lot with a Canadian issue of HMBMAA i bought once. Pulled out an issue of 'It Only Takes A Minute' that was in there but never took much notice of the others, think i played bit of em once & were all a bit disco'y. Will have to have a more thorough look i think yes.gif

Seem to remember a Blues & Soul end of year poll of DJs and music journos in 76

Richard Searlings wish for 77 being for Tavares to tour England and play Wigan Casino

Cheers Paul

Who remembers them at the Ritz in Manchester - arount the time of "Heaven..." & "It only takes..."?

Great performance from Chubby and the guys :(

All the above tunes by them get my vote too, but also let's not forget the other early Capitol 45 before Chubby got his name in the group's title....

The Turnpikes "Nothing but promises" (seen on the odd list for the flip side "Cast a spell")

Steve - the Victor Tavares tune...I've got one called "Show me" on Malaco I think?

Got to be 'Bad Times' - brilliant....

I met the Tavares during the 8Ts at Joannas in Gillingham on a wet Wednesday where they were going to be the act at a grab a granny night. In the afternoon before the show, they rehearsed most of their big numbers and then sang a slower acapella version of Heaven must be missing an angel - blew my mind. Jo
