Guest soul99 easylay Posted September 28, 2007 Share Posted September 28, 2007 Hi All, Here's a hell of a question for you: What is your favourite NS track that really shouldn't be considered NS (but is because it has been accepted as so) Did that make sense???? What I mean is: A "classic" Northern sound is (obviously) Soul e.g - "Too darn Soulful" - Morris Chestnut / "Hang On" - Wall of sound etc etc. A classic song that ISN'T Northern (obviously) ISN'T Soul e.g - "My Generation" - The Who / "Louie Louie" The Kingsmen etc etc. ....are you following me so far??? But there are certain songs which are Northern, because they've been accepted as Northern (due to being played at NS venues), but they aren't Soul at all (e.g Astral Trip - Mystic Moods - pile of pish!). So what's your favourite?? (I know my heads hurting too after that) I'll give you your starter for ten: "(Afternoon) Of the Rhino" - Mike Post Coalition - what a belting tune to dance to - sounds like a movie sound track and about as "Soulful" as muzak - but I love it! Is this true? Doubt it, Barnaby's a female (aint she?). Anyway, de-to, agree with your list, thing is, these white artists injected a bit of Motown into their sets (cause' it was the 'in' thing). I admitted to Pete Smith that I found Footsee quite exhilarating listening to it on his podcast. I did & still do think Gary Lewis is shite though. Country Road is a fab dancer & with its funky bass line is just right for today........I know at least one DJ who includes this now & again in what is an otherwise a pretty upfront set. More recently Johnnny Praye does it for me. A lot of the Beach sounds from the Carolinas that have crossed over are white, but as they were generally trying to copy a 'black' RnB sound many sound pretty good to my ears, too many examples to mention really, but the Nomads, Embers, Bob Collins, Anthony & the Aqua Lads, Frankie & the Damons, etc, etc, etc. It will be quite interesting to see how the so called purists view this post.
