Guest soul99 easylay Posted September 28, 2007 Posted September 28, 2007 Hi All, Here's a hell of a question for you: What is your favourite NS track that really shouldn't be considered NS (but is because it has been accepted as so) Did that make sense???? What I mean is: A "classic" Northern sound is (obviously) Soul e.g - "Too darn Soulful" - Morris Chestnut / "Hang On" - Wall of sound etc etc. A classic song that ISN'T Northern (obviously) ISN'T Soul e.g - "My Generation" - The Who / "Louie Louie" The Kingsmen etc etc. ....are you following me so far??? But there are certain songs which are Northern, because they've been accepted as Northern (due to being played at NS venues), but they aren't Soul at all (e.g Astral Trip - Mystic Moods - pile of pish!). So what's your favourite?? (I know my heads hurting too after that) I'll give you your starter for ten: "(Afternoon) Of the Rhino" - Mike Post Coalition - what a belting tune to dance to - sounds like a movie sound track and about as "Soulful" as muzak - but I love it! So come on then folks any advances??? - Upload clips of your favourites! 02_Afternoon_Of_The_Rhino___Post__Mike_Coalition_Various_Artists.mp3

Guest Matt Male Posted September 28, 2007 Posted September 28, 2007 Barnaby Bye - Can't Live This Way (very catchy but probably not really soul, typical Northern though) Mark F. told me it was really the Alessi brothers (of 'Oh Lori' fame). Is this true?
Soul-slider Posted September 29, 2007 Posted September 29, 2007 (edited) Barnaby Bye - Can't Live This Way (very catchy but probably not really soul, typical Northern though) Mark F. told me it was really the Alessi brothers (of 'Oh Lori' fame). Is this true? Doubt it, Barnaby's a female (aint she?). Anyway, de-to, agree with your list, thing is, these white artists injected a bit of Motown into their sets (cause' it was the 'in' thing). It's really pop but captured the Wigan crowd. Personally, I love Ray Merrell's effort! Edited September 29, 2007 by Soul-Slider
Guest Glynn Jones Posted September 29, 2007 Posted September 29, 2007 The Sweet - ...Broken Heart Attack. Always did it for me @ the Casino & Clifton Hall. Oh and The Seeds - Pushing Too Hard was a floor packer. Still play The Sweet now & again but my mrs can't stand The Seeds. lol
Steve G Posted September 29, 2007 Posted September 29, 2007 Always liked things like "What's it gonna be" Dusty Springfield, and Mickey Moonshine - still do in fact- and have had soft spots for Paula Parfitt, and Sue Lynne There! bet that's shocked a few of ya's!
macca Posted September 29, 2007 Posted September 29, 2007 sweet music - chris cerf The vocal has a Len Barry feel to it. One of my fave sounds in 1977. I admitted to Pete Smith that I found Footsee quite exhilarating listening to it on his podcast. I did & still do think Gary Lewis is shite though.

gazman Posted September 29, 2007 Posted September 29, 2007 Travis wammack - Scratchy ......Don't know what the feck it's supposed to be but i like it! Gary
Guest miff Posted September 29, 2007 Posted September 29, 2007 really? I always thought this very soulful. tremendous vocal, great brass/bass... a searling spin? M Yes Indeed and played here in Cleethorpes, but they were a white American rock band, I got my copy the LP, off my cousin, who was and still is in to heavy metal. and could not understand why me a soulie would want it. as he thorght it had nothing to do with soul, he did say it was a bit to funky for his tates though. and gave me it for free
Guest Matt Male Posted September 29, 2007 Posted September 29, 2007 Barnaby Bye are the Alessi brothers. They have recently re-formed and are touring again according to their website gary Thanks for that

I had the album too & I seem to remember them looking like something from Hair.
Russ Vickers Posted September 29, 2007 Posted September 29, 2007 black nasty cut your motor off Your having a laugh, Black Nasty included a couple of Johnnie Mae Mathews kids & wasnt Big Hit her label ????. Country Road is a fab dancer & with its funky bass line is just right for today........I know at least one DJ who includes this now & again in what is an otherwise a pretty upfront set. More recently Johnnny Praye does it for me. A lot of the Beach sounds from the Carolinas that have crossed over are white, but as they were generally trying to copy a 'black' RnB sound many sound pretty good to my ears, too many examples to mention really, but the Nomads, Embers, Bob Collins, Anthony & the Aqua Lads, Frankie & the Damons, etc, etc, etc. It will be quite interesting to see how the so called purists view this post. Blake H Posted September 29, 2007 Posted September 29, 2007 Joey Dee "Its got You" Jubilee and always liked "Ronas Theme"...............Gasp Blake
macca Posted September 29, 2007 Posted September 29, 2007 (edited) HIGH VOLTAGE Judge for yourselves. There's no denying that bass intro & listening to the socially conscious lyrics, I think they're having a swipe at that lump of saccharine 'Country Roads' by the Pinochet loving frustrated pilot, John Denver. Codfromderby Posted September 30, 2007 Posted September 30, 2007 i,m suprised no ones mentioned one of the true northern classics, made by cowboys, the anderson bros i can see him loving you,(i think someone posted a picture on here years ago) closely followed by the cate bros where can we go also cowboy types, followed by benny troy a sasha distell type bloke , and finally the great dont put the blame on me baby by roger troy a roger whittaker lookalike, all nonsoul records, all great not to forget ace cannon lloyd michaels joey hetherton
Tomangoes Posted September 30, 2007 Posted September 30, 2007 I used to love 'Cant live this way', its not popular now, but come on it fitted the bill great in the mid 70s. Non soul I like - halos are for angels Non soul I dont like - 9 x out of 10 Ed
Steve G Posted September 30, 2007 Posted September 30, 2007 Non soul I like - halos are for angels Ed Got a feeling Blanche Carter may be a black singer a sort of "Broadway showgirl" type.....bit like Kelly Garrett
Tomangoes Posted October 1, 2007 Posted October 1, 2007 Mizz Carter - Black? You learn something new every day. I'll swop that choice for Bev Ann - Mind on other things. Met her at the LA gig and she is as white as the driven snow for sure, but always loved that tune, although He's coming home is Baaad. Ed
