Have just purchased "Marvin Gaye The Master 1961-1984" Its a hard back book measuring approx 280 x 280mm.

Its mainly pictoral & features some stunning full page, jaw dropping photos of the man.

Built into the front cover is a 4 set CD anthology.

Produced by Universal Music. There are also seperate boks in same format/series for Stevie Wonder & Dusty Springfield.

Be interested to know of anything similar out there fror other artists.

Not the same but a similar type of thing, I recently picked up 'Motown: The Golden Years' by Bill Dahl...it's a great book featuring all the Motown artists with great 60's photos. Back section is dedicated to the 'unknown' artists. There's a colour section with photos by Weldon A. McDougal III who many know as one of the 'Harthon' production team. He worked with Motown artists during the late 60's/early 70's.

The one downside to it is the cover is awful (imo)...instead of using some stunning 60's pictures...they've opted for a few of McDougals (casual) 70's pics.

If anyone's interested, the book is published by 'Krause Publications' (www.krause.com)

Not about Motown in specific, this book digs deeper into the early days of Gamble and Huff and the later Sound of Philadelphia...quite an impressive book that will appeal to many Northern Soul music lovers

Written by Tony Cummings, published by Methuen publishers 1975

Agree with Dave Moore, Fantastic Book!

Read it I don't know how many times from when it first came out (early / mid 70's).

Some Mouthwatering early Record Shop Ads in there too (Val Shively etc.).

Also, thoroughly recommend:-

Chicago Soul - Robert Pruter (Lance, Mayfield, Butler etc - they're all in here!)

Say It One Time For The Brokenhearted - Barney Hoskyns (The Country Soul Bible!)

Sweet Soul Music - Peter Guralnick (Stax and then some!)

Nowhere To Run - Gerry Hirshey (some great interviews etc)

The Record Men - Rich Cohen (Fantastic 'Chess' Related)

wonderful read ,essential.

BAZ A

I got my copy from a discount bookseller in Oxford St in the 70's - 30p......there was a whole pile of them - but it's not for sale.

"The Hit Men" is also a great read, although not specifically soul, all about the music business, the mafia, payola etc. Some great stuff in there, and that's where I found out the meaning of JAMF Productions on Calla releases laugh.gif

try this site for soul book reviews dont think the site has been updated recently??,books also have the isbn numbers included, https://www.localdial.com/users/jsyedu133/S...eview/index.htm

There's also about twenty book reviews on SKM, but again it's not been updated for a while. I'll probably get round to that next week now.

I've read and own a fair few of ones already mentioned, I also own these and highly recommend them, one a really good read and the other is a great reference book.

The Good Read:

Insights on life and love BARRY Love Unlimited WHITE.

Don't be put off, half the book is about how Barry got started in the music business in the 60's and his involvement in Gang life in L.A during that period, yes there's bit's missing but still a great read.

The Reference book:

SAVAGE LOST, Florida Garge Bands The 60's and Beyond, by Jeff Lemlich.

Again don't be put off as it has great coverage of Florida soul labels, with lots of references to matrix numbers and pressing plants.

I got my copy about 10 years back directly off Jeff, as we were both members of the southern soul group at the time, as I'm no longer a member of that group I'm not sure if Jeff's is still on there, but worth checking and contacting him direct if you have trouble finding a copy.
