Imagine their was no internet for a second... ohmy.gif

You are out at a niter / soul nite... would you spend your nite...

getting into an argument with somebody you've probably never even seen before just because they didn't share your taste in records... or wear the same clothes... or whatever...

or

just get on with it and go about enjoying yourself...

With all the arguing and bickering that's been going on of late on here... I'm just wondering... does it actually do any good?

Am just interested in what you all think.

Are you trying to cause an argument???

If its taken with a pinch of salt, the banter is funny, but any open forum has the danger of spilling over.

Its been said on here many times about using this media to get over your frustrations instead of dealing with it face to face. Cyber violence, its here to stay im afraid.

No Joan I don't think it does any good at all, to be honest I'm getting to the stage where I can't really be bothered with it all anymore, love the music, the collecting side of things always have and always will, love to DJ now and again but this constant un-rest and general negative bad vibe is killing it for me and I'm sure a few others? and I don't think this is just happening here on SS I think it's a little deeper than that and a little more widespread.

Of course people have the right (freedom of speach and all that) to pass comment and have an opinion but it seems to get a little out of hand sometimes, personal direct attacks perhaps should be kept off the site and the main forum and be conducted in private between the people with the problem or gripe. I guess it's very hard sometimes not to say something or reply to something or a comment, view, opinion when passions run as deep as they do on the soul scene.

Regards - Mark Bicknell.

Guest in town Mikey

It rreminds me of myself and my brother at Stafford, when Dave Thorley was Djing.

He'd play a rousing 60s number like 'Stop the world I wanna get off', and maybe follow it with a modern tune say Cheryl Berdell.

I'd be coming off the floor moaing that it wasnt as good as the previous one, as my brother dashed the opposite way shouting TUNE!!!!

But Mark we've always had these differences amongst our community. The only difference now is you see it more on the Internet where it's very easy to disagree with someone just by posting an email. In the old days you only saw them in the magazines letter columns, and by the time you read it, the issue was probably long since gone (unless of course it's oldies versus newies, 60s versus 70s etc - those arguments have raged on for decades). But politix has always been part of the scene. So don't lose heart!

As already said, there's nothing on here that wasn't and still isn't said in the record bars at all-nighters.

Think I've always had debates, sometimes heated, about the state of the scene, the quality of the music, oldies, newies blah blah blah......

I think half the posts on here are wind ups but some don't see them as that :D and it's very easy to take the written word the wrong way.

I've not seen too much that has crossed the line and you never know it just might do some good one day :D

Obviously most of us know the answer to that, 'life too short', 'need to have a REAL problem in life to deal with' - well Im sure now I have someone 'angry' or 'want an argument with me' about my comments!! :D:huh::lol::D

Imagine there was no internet for a second?

Well I for one of many spent most of my twenties and thirties at Nighters when the tinternet was unheard of by most.

This is how it worked,

You got a copy of Echoes and flipped straight to the back for Brady's Beat for the next Nighters venue.

You rang up 9not on a mobile) one or three of your mates to see who was going and to score.... (Bad subject, read past this)

You went out and bought a new shirt and made sure you had enough deodorant, aftershave, talk, and clean socks n shreddies then counted down the days to the venue.

Promise your young wife you'd be back in plenty of time to do some thing on Sunday and swear blind that you won't spend all day in bed Phetting!

Pick me mate up from Doncaster, Scotty, drive towards the nighters playing or cassettes and playing the "Remember this game".

Get lost; ask some local who knows nothing about where he lives for the location of the venue.

Prey its still on. Pay yer money and shake hands with every one. Buy a coke, shake hands and hug. Change shoes and have a dance, shake hands kiss cheeks hug.

Dance some more, squirt some deodorant and change shirt. Dance. Buy coke do some more wiz, dance.

Drink coke, dance, hug, bend some ones ear off in the bogs, or avoid having your ear bent in the bogs by some equally boring dude who is just fookin happy to see you and be at a Nighter.

Dance, have a coffee, get pissed off coz it's the last record. Hug, kiss on cheek, shake hands, pick up the flyers from the tables and walk towards the door.

Hug, shake hands, kiss cheeks, swap phone numbers when some one produces a pencil (remember them?).

Blink whilst walking towards the car, sun glasses on, drive to motorway services. Coffee shake hands, kiss cheeks, hug. "See ya at Keele?"

Drive home trying to remember the name of the track that nearly bought you to tears. Get home; pretend to be interested in what your wife watched last night on TV whilst trying to remember the track that nearly bought you to tears.

Have a power nap and spend Sunday talking shite and trying to mingle in with your wife's friends hoping no one ever finds out that you are really from a far distant planet where you only really exist between 1200hrs and 0800hrs along with the other aliens from the planet Soul!

That's what it was fookin like before the internet, not too bad me thinks.

What have we now? Well every one is a CD e-bay expert with a collection of electronic northern tracks that would make the big DJ's weep over. No one needs to move much further than their back bed room to comment on The Casino or on any other Northernsoul subject.

Could I do with out the internet?................ I'd cut my mousse balls off in a thrice.

respect for other peoples feelings and opinions goes a long way and if you dont agree up yours cos your wrong :D

I couldnt think of a better way to spend a few hours when all the soaps are on telly whilst listening to soul music through me haedphones enjoying the differing tastes we all have and watching threads develop, if having an opinion yourself and being afarid to post it for fear of retribution is sad but i always post what i feel is what im about and if someone dont agree so what, it aint the end of the world is it.

feel free to post and enjoy i say

I still think its worth posting but lately I am a bit more cautious of starting a thread on here in case you get hammered...

Must say Ive never liked the use of the word "politics" in relation to our scene.

Alot of the time its petty bickering, plain and simple and imho to give it the "p" word makes it sound more serious/grown up than what it is

But on the flipside, what about all the information you can get from all the boys n girls on here? Info about everything!!!

You can listen to tunes straight out of peoples collections, find out almost anything to do with Soulmusic, You can browse the Sales and get a bargain, or sell your doubles! You can have a laugh on here aswell!

You can find out which events are on, look at playlists etc.....etc

This site is a mine of information, but I guess you will always get people posting negitive stuff or stuff you might not agree with.

I just usually ignore the things that people post that I dont agree with, and get on with reading and listening to the things I like.

As for personal attacks and weird stuff, thats where the moderators come in, and do a good job of nipping things in the bud!

Soulsource is a brill site, Soulmusic information central !!!!

Good and bad in my opinion.

GOOD

Being able to tap into so many knowledgable people regarding tunes.

Being able to find out what's going on.

The (mostly) good humoured banter.

The sales/wants sections a benefit to most if not all.

BAD

Unfortunately the net in general and forums in particular have made it too easy for people to advertise/ promote nights for free , resulting in a huge number of events and the crowd spread more and more thinly.

The lookbacks section which for the main part is a backslappers convention would love to see more genuine punters reviews good or bad rather than the usual promoters mates and DJ' s from the night.

that'll do for now.

Hi Derek

Can only speak on behalf of myself - I alway's write a fair n honest review regarding venue's I've attended, regardless if a mate is promoting or djing - personally don't see the point in posting a review if it isn't a true reflection of the nite.... though some can take exception if the review is not to their liking - though generally I follow the saying - If you can't say anything good then don't say anything at all..... tbh you usually can tell when people are as you put it backslapping or are genuine..

from a genuine punter regardless who is running the venue....

Joan....whilst even I would agree there is a lot of bitching, people have not been bitching about genuine folk on the soul scene only those, that despite their protestations who have been using the scene just to further their own aims or as a marketing tool to make money. None of the well established places that are run by people with proven credentials and over a period of time shown their motives to be honest, have been critisised. I might add that some of these charlatans have quite rightly fallen by the wayside as indeed they should. I THINK IT'S VERY HEALTHY for these debates to take place. there is no place for these people on this scene and this forum gives everyone the oppertunity to THINK about points that are raised.....Lastly it never puts me off going out or my pals so why should it anyone else

all the best terry
