Guest Budgie
I learnt recently that when Lew Kirton visited the UK once, he had no recollection of ever recording a song called "Heaven In The Afternoon", so his fans had to teach him the song so that he could perform it. Interesting. Also, Ashford & Simpson, when visiting the UK, proved unaware of some of the `hit versions´ other artists have done of their songs. I forgot, there was something I was supposed to do now.....?!?!?!.... Ok, now I remember, I was supposed to press the "add reply" button Appeared live at Queens Hall Widnes thanks to Mr Harry Dennett. He also tried to get Jr Walker over but he could'nt get a work permit so the story was at the time. All the best Pete. Link to comment Social source share

Guest Modern Skip Tone
I learnt recently that when Lew Kirton visited the UK once, he had no recollection of ever recording a song called "Heaven In The Afternoon", so his fans had to teach him the song so that he could perform it. Interesting. /quote] Melismo, Many, including myself, saw Lew appearing at the Bank Hall Miners in Burnley, one friday evening in the early/mid eighties, doing a one off PA. His dressing room was highjacked by the punters, requesting information and songs to be sung. So of course "Heaven" had been an anthem for sometime on the UK modern scene, but was not on Lew's song sheet for that evening. A quick verbal brief rendition and off onto the stage. But when he sang over the record of "Heaven" - Lew Kirton was somewhat lost...but the vocals of the punters lifted the entire performance. . Regards, Nick. (PS - I'm glad somebody else has pick up on Mr Fingers - Searching For A Love (LP track) 20/30 years later). Link to comment Social source share

Guest
amazing how the term modern soul seems to cover a period of 37 years think we should rename most of it disco-shite whats a choon anyway is that a hip word thats passed me by By my own admition my knowledge of soul music is limited compared to a lot of people. however, looking at the topic title i cannot help but smile. below are just a few of the tracks mentioned in this thread that i was playing out back in the eighties: Tyrone Davis - turn back the hands of time DAVID RUFFIN- WALK AWAY FROM LOVE JJ BARNES - HOW LONG (7") BENNY TROY - I WANNA GIVE YOU TOMORROW Greg Perry - It takes Heart The Skullsnaps-'My hang up is you' Tyrone Barkley - man of value are these really considered 'modern' music in 2008 Link to comment Social source share
Sean Hampsey
are these really considered 'modern' music in 2008 In some quarters... yes! I was playing your entire list in the 70's... but I take your point. Guess its all relative. To your average 'Northern' fan anything that sounds remotely 'post 60's' is considered 'modern'. Awesome. I got sick of Ivan Matias because I played it too much but I've not heard it in AGES... time to dig it out... I thought I was bored with Modern but some of the tunes that have been mentioned in this thread actually make me want to go dig 'em out. Guest Modern Skip Tone
Neo 'Smile' has already fallen into that category for me, along with 'This Is What You Are'. Yes agree Roger, both Mario Biondi and Neo both somewhat overplayed and still will be long after the date of our posts. But that is what the largest part of the punters now associate this music with, old and lesser recent releases, unfortunatly. . How many times are you going to hear the above at the "forum ball" this weekend and the next and so on. . Link to comment Social source share
