Sean Hampsey Posted August 30, 2007 Posted August 30, 2007 Hi, I'm just wondering what peoples modern soul favourites were? what choons are killing you while you are listening to, which ones make you smile??? which ones make you satisfied??? Any recommendations? cheers matt Tony Fox "Love Let Love And Be Loved" still excites the fool out of me. The Dells "It's All Up To You" has a similar effect. Puts a 'smile on' like nothing that can be taken orally, inhaled, or injected! Neither are my all time 'fave' modern soul tunes... but certainly, they make me feel high! Sean
Guest andyrattigan Posted August 30, 2007 Posted August 30, 2007 Oh so, so many Modern tunes that blow me away here are a few: Curtis Mayfield- Soul Music Bessie Banks- The Best is Yet to Come Terry Callier- I dont want to see myself without you Rare Pleasure- Let me down easy Johnnie Taylor- What about my Love Dells- It's all up to you Al Hudson- Spread Love Jon Lucien- Would you believe in me Ledisi- Good Lovin' Hardsoul feat Ron Carrol- Back together Rahsann Patterson- Get Here Kelli Sae-Can't wait Rance Allen- Peace of Mind Gill Scott Heron- It's your world Tyrone Davis- Turn Back the hands of time Margie Joseph- I can't move no mountains All these tunes really pick me up! Perfection
Guest soultempo Posted August 31, 2007 Posted August 31, 2007 Impressions - You can't be wrong (all the time) ... ! Always put's a to my face ... ! Lamont Dozier - Can't Get Off Until The Feelin' Stops ... is another ... !
Reg Posted August 31, 2007 Posted August 31, 2007 Just listening to Eddie Pillar with Johnny T on the radio clips.....listened to it before but what a great selection of modern stuff from the Valatone playlists....includes Collins and Collins, marcia Hines, 4th day, Brown Sugar etc.....I know that brown Sugar got hammered a few years ago but it's still one of my all time favourites
Peter99 Posted August 31, 2007 Posted August 31, 2007 Tony Fox "Love Let Love And Be Loved" still excites the fool out of me. Sean Hi Sean Tony Fox is a wicked tune - been playing it over and over for the last couple of weeks! For some reason I've become totally hooked on the female backing vocals - it's really odd. It's really odd "To mend your heart, May take some time, To understand these folks of Mine" - I just love it!

Mark68 Posted August 31, 2007 Posted August 31, 2007 Like it where can i get one The album and the 12" are relatively easy to pick up.
Peter99 Posted August 31, 2007 Posted August 31, 2007 Like it where can i get one I might have a spare one of these on the seven - not sure what it's worth? Think it's a cheap one. I'll check tonight.
Mark68 Posted August 31, 2007 Posted August 31, 2007 I remember when Mark Lesner was knocking these out for £30 20years ago at Chris Bangs' Boscombe Weekender. This record got hammered to death in the 8t's along with Flowers etc. It drove me up the wall hearing these records time after time so I got rid of mine. I don't regret it one bit although I did have an alcohol induced dance to it at Herminio and Alfredo's excellent do in Oviedo. I never get bored of Target though.
Eddie Hubbard Posted August 31, 2007 Posted August 31, 2007 W King Cole " I wonder why " and Harold Tyler " Reality " are 2 modern / crossover sides that are hitting the spot for me at the moment ,Best ,Eddie 1
Professorturnups Posted August 31, 2007 Posted August 31, 2007 hi, donny gerrard is a really wonderful choon. you got a soundfile of Mind and Matter - I'm under your spell cheers matt Unfortunately I don't own the record (not a collector - just love the music) but can remember Rob Smith used to play it at Keele (c/u as Merlin & the Magicians I believe) On the same subject I think the Melvin Moore was c/u as Sir Wales Wallace - Just like that. I'm a bit of an obsessive when it comes to cover ups! Sorry - going off the theme of this thread a bit! Mark C
Djmelismo Posted August 31, 2007 Posted August 31, 2007 A list of some of the most essential modern soul classics Mainly tracks from the 70´s and 80´s. For most Soul-Source members these tracks are overplayed and all too obvious, but for anyone who wants to catch up with some of the best of modern soul this may be a pretty apt start: Glenn Jones - I Am Somebody Ozone - Our Hearts Will Always Shine Beloyd - Get Into Your Life Flowers - For Real Whatnauts - Help Is On The Way Al Johnson - I´ve Got My Second Wind Channel 3 - The Sweetest Thing (This Side Of Heaven) Lew Kirton - Heaven In The Afternoon Active Force - Give Me Your Love Lonnie Hill - Galveston Bay The Jones Girls - Nights Over Egypt Atlantic Starr - When Love Calls Controllers - Stay Norman Connors - She´s Gone Michael Wycoff - Looking Up To You Glenn Jones - I Am Somebody Alfonzo Surrett - Gimme Your Love Windy City - Fool Or Your Man Natural High - Trust In Me Lowrell - Mellow Mellow Right On Leo´s Sunship - Give Me The Sunshine High Fashion - Feelin´ Lucky Lately Phyllis Hyman - You Know How To Love Me Futures - Ain´t Got Time Fa Nuthin´ Garfield Fleming - Don´t Send Me Away Fat Larry´s Band - Act Like You Know Tyrone Davis - In The Mood Randy Brown - The Next Best Thing To Being There Breakwater - Say You Love Me Girl Arnold Blair - Trying To Get Next To You Archie Bell & The Drells - Don´t Let Love Get You Down Coke Escovedo - Why Can´t We Be Lovers Otis & Shugg - Journey Kindred - As Of Yet Frank McComb - Golden Lady Lalah Hahtaway - Better And Better O.T. Sykes - My First Love Al Mason - Good Lovin´ Jay Player - Love Is The Answer Those are some of tracks I´d play for a person that I want to introduce to modern soul, by playing some classics. Some of them are quite expensive, but can be obtained on, dare I say, Modern Soul compilation albums However, you may find some of those rarer items on E-bay or Manship. Others, like Atlantic Star, Controllers etc. are as cheap as chips. Best, Melismo
Soul Shrews Posted August 31, 2007 Posted August 31, 2007 Glenn Jones certainly is overplayed........................appearing twice on your list djm Cheers Paul
Djmelismo Posted August 31, 2007 Posted August 31, 2007 Glenn Jones certainly is overplayed........................appearing twice on your list djm Cheers Paul Ooops! Deserves a repeat though - a very uplifting song with a positive message. Overplayed - but for a reason, its quality... Cheers Paul Melismo
Djmelismo Posted August 31, 2007 Posted August 31, 2007 Lew Kirton - Heaven In The Afternoon I learnt recently that when Lew Kirton visited the UK once, he had no recollection of ever recording a song called "Heaven In The Afternoon", so his fans had to teach him the song so that he could perform it. Interesting. Also, Ashford & Simpson, when visiting the UK, proved unaware of some of the `hit versions´ other artists have done of their songs. I forgot, there was something I was supposed to do now.....?!?!?!.... Ok, now I remember, I was supposed to press the "add reply" button
Guest Polyvelts Posted August 31, 2007 Posted August 31, 2007 Invitations - Look on the good side Randy Brown - Always in the mood Harold Melvin - Bad Luck Although these 3 are almost the same record ! They still put a smile on my face !

That´s what is says in all reference books and album liner notes, but Randy Brown himself, when visiting the UK, said that he never was a member of that group! Anyone who can shed some light on the matter? Melismo
