How Many Versions

I just bought a copy of Little Sonny's WADE IN THE WATER. It got me thinking that there are three versions I know of this tune, Little Sonny's, Marlena Shaw's and Ramsey Lewis's. My personal fave is the Little Sonny Version.

What other tunes have two or more versions?

Jackie Wilson and Aretha Franklin both did: IT ONLY HAPPENS WHEN I LOOK AT YOU

To name just one example.

Aren't some of these different songs - as opposed to being different versions?

Tony Basil is the best Breakaway in my opinion - fooking awesome toon.

At least 2 versions of 'Theres gonna be a showdown'

Archie Bell is OK, but a bit too fast for my feet to dance through the whole thing, and the there is the absolute 'soul experience' of Rance Allan. (Wah Wooh Wayye - inspirational...)

Even bought a 'best of RA' Stax Lp, on the strength of it.

Here's some "two versions" tunes that I likes the complete different tempo and/or feel between the one and the other:

1. "Now That We Found Love" (O'Jays mid-tempo / ballad // Third World reagge-disco bombastic)

2. "Time" - (A soul-gospel up-tempo by Mighty Clouds Of Joy // a very good cover, psychedelyc funk-rock flavoured by Jackie Moore)

3. "Do Your Thing" - (Isaac Hayes, mellow Stax classic // Good harmony on The Temptation's cover)

4. "Inner City Blues" - (Both, the Marvin's original and the cover by The Chi-lites, on their "A Lonely Man" album, have a highly soulful level and different tone)

And I can enumerate hundreds more... But these come first to my mind as examples of "different aportation".

Open The Door To Your Heart

Darrell Banks

Art Ensley and The Echoes

Jackie Wilson

The Mob

Sonny Monroe

" Hurt So Bad " is a strong contender for the most covered song .....

I have a CD somewhere featuring at least 25+ different artists giving their all on the said song ; I will endeavour to seek it out , and list the artists on it ....

Motown must be the kings of the multiple versions, it is estimated each motown record has about ten versions. The funk brothers would cut the backing track then various artists would take it in turns to cut the vocal. The best version would become a single, the other would become either album tracks or trashed. the trashed ones are now some of the motown unreleased jems getting spins. Example..Spinners truly yours, Eric and the Vikings I'm truly yours and temptations truly yours

Hi, Soul Shrews,

There's also another Gamble-Huff one covered by Martha Reeves: "Power Of Love" (that they writed for Joe Simon) and also by Martha as a MCA 45.

Another "California Soul" cover is by Brenda & The Tabulations.

Also "Light My Fire" got a great cover that I mentioned on the "Tunes that made you a tear on your eye" thread", by soulful Clarence Carter. And I got also another by BJ Thomas.

Some others:

-"Be My Girl" - writed by Michael Henderson and published by himself and also by The Dramatics

-Burt Bacharach's almost standar "Reach Out For Me" from wich I likes the two covers by Michael Henderson and by Jerry Butler

-"Disco Inferno" - Trammps / Tina Turner

-"Oye C³mo Va" - Tito Puente (the original!!) / Santana

-"Shaft" - Isaac Hayes / Joe Bataan

-"The Bottle" - Gil Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson / Brother to Brother / Joe Bataan

-"Save The Children" - Gil Scott-Heron / Intruders

-"I'm Not In Love" - 10 CC / Dee Dee Sharp

-"Oh-Oh Child" - Five Stairteps & Cubie / Dee Dee Sharp

-"Wa'd I Say" - Ray Charles / Bunny Sigler

-"Love Train" - O'Jays / Three Degrees / and a nice gospel cover by Bunny again!

Woaaaaahhh..! and what a precious cover by Dionne Warwick, live (the female chorus is celestial!!). Is on her 2 x LP "A Man & A Woman" (with Isaac Hayes, ABC Hot Buttered Soul, 1976 or 77, ?)
