It got me thinking that there are three versions I know of this tune, Little Sonny's, Marlena Shaw's and Ramsey Lewis's. My personal fave is the Little Sonny Version. What other tunes have two or more versions? Jackie Wilson and Aretha Franklin both did: IT ONLY HAPPENS WHEN I LOOK AT YOU To name just one example. "Now That We Found Love" (O'Jays mid-tempo / ballad // Third World reagge-disco bombastic) 2. "Time" - (A soul-gospel up-tempo by Mighty Clouds Of Joy // a very good cover, psychedelyc funk-rock flavoured by Jackie Moore) 3. "Do Your Thing" - (Isaac Hayes, mellow Stax classic // Good harmony on The Temptation's cover) 4. "Inner City Blues" - (Both, the Marvin's original and the cover by The Chi-lites, on their "A Lonely Man" album, have a highly soulful level and different tone) And I can enumerate hundreds more... The funk brothers would cut the backing track then various artists would take it in turns to cut the vocal. The best version would become a single, the other would become either album tracks or trashed. the trashed ones are now some of the motown unreleased jems getting spins.
