Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted August 29, 2007 Posted August 29, 2007 OK, Stevie G, the gauntlet is down! Where do you start with 'best ballads on All Platinum/Stang/Turbo/Sugar Hill'? The labels fair overflow with them! You could fill a thread with Linda Jones tracks alone - but I won't... Here's my starter for 10, in no particular order: 1. When The Hurt Comes Back - The Heartstoppers (AP) 2. 3 Minutes 2 Hey Girl - George Kerr (AP) 3. Just can't Lose Your Love - The Whatnauts (Stang) 4. You Won't Support Me - Mill Street Depo (Turbo) 5. You Made Me Love You - Phillippe Wynne (Sugar Hill) 6. Distant Lover - Kevin Keeys (Jersey Connection) 7. Gotta Find A Way - The Moments (Stang) 8. Love On A Two Way Street - Lezli Valentine (AP) 9. What Can I Do - Val Martin (AP) 10. I Fell Asleep - Chuck Jackson (AP) Next list, please! TONE

Jaco Posted August 29, 2007 Posted August 29, 2007 Don't know about posting a list, Tone - I'll leave that to others more knowledgable than me - but top, top marks for numbers 1, 3 and especially 6, which has always been a favourite of mine.

Jimmy Mayes, leader of the Mill Street Depo, knew Al Goodman from back in Jackson, MS where Al was a member of the Carvettes. 1. moments - To you with love (this came out twice, both as b-sides, one is a horrible studio outtake sounding thing with no group and the other is totally excellent) 2. whatnauts - try me 3. spoilers - sad man's land on turbo (totally different than the tobin record) 4. We Three ltd. on astroscope (ultra-rare record) 5. Ponderosa twins - bound - astroscope 6. Young ladies on stang 7. prophecy - nya on all platinum 8. optimistics - should I let myself go - turbo 9. Linda Jones - for your precious love - Turbo 10. Willie and the mighty magnificents - make me your slave - all platinum 11. Equations - oh you sweet darlin - all platinum.

Steve Plumb Posted August 30, 2007 Posted August 30, 2007 Linda Jones - Not on the outside - Turbo The 45 responsible for my 30+ year love of Deep Soul Steve
Steve Edgar Posted August 30, 2007 Posted August 30, 2007 A few classic ballads in my book would be, Lezli Valentine "I've Got To Keep On Loving You" (All Platinuim) Derek Martin "That's What I'll Do" (Vibration) Donnie Elbert "Can't Get Over Losing You" (Rare Bullet) Linda Jones "Dont Go (I Can't Bare To be Alone)" (Turbo) steve
Stuart Russell Posted August 30, 2007 Posted August 30, 2007 Technically speaking not a ballad, as Dave 'Baby' Cortez doesn't sing more tell a story, but "Unaddressed Letter" is worth a listen. I seem to recall John Abbey loved this and mentioned in his US imports reviews in B&S. It's on the flip of "Funky Robot" and also on the Soul Vibration LP. Both on All Platinum of course. Stuart

Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted August 31, 2007 Posted August 31, 2007 Mill Street Depo is on Stang, not turbo. Sorry Boba, slip of the keyboard in my haste to kick this thread off... ...how are you liking Little Duck and the Quackers, BTW?
boba Posted August 31, 2007 Posted August 31, 2007 Sorry Boba, slip of the keyboard in my haste to kick this thread off... ...how are you liking Little Duck and the Quackers, BTW? haha, I can't tell if you're making fun of me for buying that, but I haven't gotten it yet. Ronn is a random label to collect for me, especially because they put out so much weird chicago stuff. Plus my friend is really into chipmunk-style novelty records, so I figured I could give it to him if it didn't work out.

No, not making fun of you at all, my friend - I've had a copy of that 45 for about 38 years and I've often played it out to mirthful reaction. You are probably aware that LD and the Q's are, in fact, Joe Stampley and the Uniques. It's Joe himself doing the duck vocals. I only noticed that you were bidding on it because I've been looking to upgrade my own copy, which is about the same condition as the one that you were bidding on. It's a pretty rare item, all in all....

Guest Paul Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 Hello, Nice track. And it sounds like Jerry Harris himself on lead vocals. Paul Mooney
Baz Atkinson Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 Got an ojays track on astroscope somewhere, will have to diG it out. BAZ A
boba Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 Hello, Nice track. And it sounds like Jerry Harris himself on lead vocals. Paul Mooney Thanks. Who is Jerry Harris? Can you easily recognize his voice when he's singing falsetto? I'm glad someone appreciated the clip, I thought everone thought it was crappy with the lack of response. If anyone wants to hear it and doesn't know it, I can post a clip of the spoilers on turbo, which in my opinion is the 2nd best all platinum ballad (WAY better than the tobin record, which somehow doesn't even sound like the same group singing).
Guest Paul Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 Hello Bob, Jerry (Gerald) Harris wrote and produced a lot of songs with George Kerr (Linda Jones, Troy Keyes, Shirelles etc) and was on the staff at All Patinum. We did some publishing business with him in the 1980s and 1990s and he often sang songs over the phone to me. It sounds like his voice on "Girl I'll Always Love You" - and of course he was the producer. Next time I speak with him I'll ask about it. Best regards, Paul Mooney
Guest Posted September 13, 2007 Posted September 13, 2007 - "Sexy Mama" - Moments -"Jak In The Box" - Moments -"Love In A Two-Way Street" - (I got it by The Moments, not by Lesly!) -"Pillow Talk" - Sylvia I wonder if the album by The O'Jays & The Moments on Astroscope is worth to find. Also, some stuff co-produced by Bunny Sigler and Sylvia Robinson, I think for Parliament (??).
Guest Gary Thomas Posted September 13, 2007 Posted September 13, 2007 Thanks. Who is Jerry Harris? Can you easily recognize his voice when he's singing falsetto?
