Larsc Posted August 27, 2007 Posted August 27, 2007 (edited) I found a record in my boxes by Paul Hampton, and it sounds like it's a popcorn tune. It's called "It's Not There Anymore" and is on WB. Anyone know it ? Value ? Edited August 29, 2007 by LarsC

Anyone know it ? Value ? I wonder why you consider this as Popcorn?? This tune is definitely NOT Popcorn imo. I believe that the true Popcorn-sound is a wee bit more exciting....and more mid-tempo than ballad
Larsc Posted August 29, 2007 Author Posted August 29, 2007 I haven't a clue, that's why I'm asking. The only trace I've found of this record on the internet was from an auction advertised as a auction of popcorn records. So what is it ? Beat ballad ? (another category I have no idea what is )

(another category I have no idea what is ) you wouldn't find this title on any popcorn collector's list...it just doesn't sound right. It's not danceable, not even as a beat ballad. As a beat ballad it needs a much stronger beat anyway....the tone and the production of the whole thing sounds just too lame to be popcorn. a lot of confusion and bullsh*t is going on about popcorn, especially on the net with American sellers...as is the similar case with Northern

Are these Popcorn Tony Williams - How Come Marie Knight - To be loved by you Azie Mortimer - Lips I saw Sam Fletcher - I think it over listed as popcorn

There's also a fair bit of 'cross pollination', for the want of a better word, between the Popcorn, R&B, and Northern scene. That's just my opinion and not something based on so-called fact.
pow wow mik Posted August 29, 2007 Posted August 29, 2007 I get a bit confused with the word popcorn myself, i had a cd of a guy from Down under. the cd was full of it, oops i mean sh.t it all sounded like gene pitney except for about 3 track. Are these Popcorn Tony Williams - How Come Marie Knight - To be loved by you Azie Mortimer - Lips I saw Sam Fletcher - I think it over listed as popcorn Marie Knight is definitely a popcorn tempo sound, cant remember the others although i've heard them. They were playing Sam Fletcher in Belgium in the 70s, definitely a popcorn tempo. The example above is popcorn tempo, but i dont know if they play it. Popcorn's like Northern soul, it's more about dance tempo and sound than any particular style. Particular collectors / dealers might describe something as popcorn even though it's never been played on that scene, often because it's shit. just as you see records described as northern that have never actually been played, or aren't any more, because they're shit.
Prophonics 2029 Posted August 29, 2007 Posted August 29, 2007 Most Popcorn records I have listened to are records with a story E.G The Drifter as against your straight girl meets boy - boy meets girl and the breaking up of the relations ship northern soul lyrics.
Guest NASHEE Posted August 29, 2007 Posted August 29, 2007 Where's all the popcorn lovers ? I find it a little bit bland...for my taste to be honest Lars. Deffinitely not enough beat or theatre to be 'good' popcorn. best Linda
Guest NASHEE Posted August 29, 2007 Posted August 29, 2007 Most Popcorn records I have listened to are records with a story E.G The Drifter as against your straight girl meets boy - boy meets girl and the breaking up of the relations ship northern soul lyrics. although some of the popcorn songs have good lyrics...its not dependant on them. It is very much to do with tempo...the slow bop style of dance depends on this. For me it has to be special..key changes...atmosphere...really something that makes the tune stand out...but this is only my preference.
Guest NASHEE Posted August 29, 2007 Posted August 29, 2007 Lovely choon Linda. Can't say I remember you playing this. Gotta spare? I played it at the Jan 'hideaway' don't think you could make it Den & again on Saturday. No spares I'm afraid
Ezzie Brown Posted September 3, 2007 Posted September 3, 2007 its ace linda, ive heard it from u out before, as u know i have several things like the paul hampton track, imo it is popcorn, personal preferances again!!!!!!!
