The Madest Tune You Ever Heard Played Out

Early 80's, at a gig with Soul Sam. Totally un-interested crowd, Sam gets bored and tells me, rock and roll is his true passion, plays a tune called 'Barking Up The Wrong Tree', (can't remember the artist) pure 50's rock and roll. Crowd still totally un-interested. Any more for any more?

"Barking up the wrong tree" is worth a bob or two as well as being a brilliant example of RnR.

Maddest toon ever? got to be Travis Wammack -Scratchy.

At one of Terry Sampson's Doncaster Bailey's all -nighters in the mid 1970s ( before the powers that be closed them down ) , a certain

DJ  started his spot with " The Stripper " by David Rose ( UK MGM ) ......

A lot of bewildered faces , but quite a few danced ......

Those were the days .....

NO SOME LOCAL PUNKS DECIDED TO "HAVE A GO" AT THE SOULIES INSIDE SO HE PUT IT ON

THEN WE DECIED TO GET RID OF THEM AND THREW TABLES AND CHAIRS AT THEM

I heard Richard S. play a David Bowie 12" promo on RCA in Mr M's during the early session once .It was during the time that Richard worked for RCA and he would often try out new stuff in the early sessions .Think the track was from Bowie's " Heroes " set , but can't remember the title .Also I seem to remember hearing a track by Cream during my first visit to The Casino in Jan 1975 - anybody got any ideas what that could be ? !! Best ,Eddie

Once heard "Hit me with your rythm stick" Ian Dury & the Blockheads played at Yate all-nighter by a well known Soul Sourcer DJ, but I'll leave him to own up to it...... :(

A few times down in Plymouth in the Late '70s I played Sam The Sham & The Pharohs, "I'm In With The Out Crowd". I still think It's a great dancer with quite funny lyrics. Also Chubby Checker "Do The Freddy".

But that was in the days when you could have a laugh at local soul nights. Is it still so?

I always thought that the middle bit from Scratchy was, "you'll do that again won't you?".

But I could be wrong.

Remember, "The Whole Thing" ? Alka Seltzer Advert I believe, great ending. Can't remember who it's by.

Scratchy is indeed a crazy record, and even though its an 'early classic' how the hell did it ended up getting played?

Cats Eyes - Life, another weirdo tune.

Once had a record called 'big limas' by the Cobra Kings on Black Gold, and also 'Soul Kiss' by Dizzie Gillespie on Perception. Always thought these were border line for playing at a nighter if stuff like Scratchy got accepted.

Don't know if anyone ever played it out, but there was a track (dunno artist or title) but something about "I'd rather go to jail without bail" .. Mental! And the ending? Double mental!! :boxing:

strange but i heard these played

theme from Joe 90

theme from the fantastic plastic machine

and third window from the right

Now why do i think no one will think playing those was weird, i did and thought they were pathetic to boot, especially when Dean barlow was a big rock n roll tune and is still played regularly on the rock n roll circuit.

A tired and emotional Pete Shirley was given a "cover up" to play at a Samanthas all dayer, which he did. It was the Muppet Chorus "Never Smile At A Crocodile". He just let it play.

My mate swears blind that Richard played Leo Sayer - Thunder In My Heart at an early M's session. Anyone back this story up?

Sean

True !

Who was responsible for playing " Strange " ?

Robert Weston Smith , AKA Wolfman Jack ( 21.01.38 - 01.07.95 ) is a legend ......

Now he would have freaked them out if he had been DJing on the NS scene ......

Thats Sean Hampsey when he was a lot younger surely
