With you on Richard Searling..his spot at the 6th anniversary was outstanding..the only reason i can remember that with such clarity is because i still have the tape i did that night at the Casino...also Chris King set at Hinckley..after Edwin Starr's appearance at the all nighter...absolutely rocked the roof off....Delxxx

Difficult to remember really, so many great sets, but for me so long ago, now.

Memorable nights at Wigan courtesy of Richard always stand out, but I can remember equally awesome sets from him at the Pendelum.

However I'd have to go with any Levine set at the Mecca following his return from his early buying trips to the States. The anticipation of what he was about to deliver as new finds was often unbelievable and he rarely disappointed.

Heady days indeed!

it was August Mark, funny though, not seen him since :D .

Searling at 8 BELLS MANSFIELD around 76 ,played all his biggies and a couple of new tracks..cue Rarestags :(

Recent sets.....

Tim Brown ,Butch , JTrouble at Lifeline ,Searling at 100 ANN(13TH?),Kitch at DKOF,sure i'll remember some more........Steve Green,Sunday nite at Prestatyn...the best set is always changing for me

Right on cue kevh :D

Wasnt there that night Rob did his set but i do know for a fact there not his tunes "probably once was".Most people in the know no they are not his but is brother Chris Marriotts tunes. For the record Searlings sixth aniversary takes some beating "yes i was there"ask dean ohmy.gif /soul sam at THE notts palais all dayers 1976-79... Mark Bicknells set at the attic the one deck set was awsome.Steve Ls lounge on ladybrook when we first got into Northern circa 1974-75 steve L had  one of tha best northern soul collections for 1 weekend only he borrowed off "Chris Barks can anyone on soulsource remember him"? he had some awsome sounds.

hard to say about years gone by,too many to remember, but recent sets that will stick in my mind are

john manship and mark bicknell at silks not that long ago..pure brilliance...

but for me and in my honest opinion nobody will ever beat

George hunt and Dickie watts, double decking, they bounce off each other, and the stuff they play is out of this fooking world, you cannot catch your breath ! IMHO

Rod Dearlove at Yarmouth, about 10 years ago.

The lad had the balls to drop 3 incredible deep tracks, in succesion, around Midnight.

Cleared the floor... but he blew us all away nevertheless, .... and the dancefloor was rammed thereafter!

Definately the most memorable set ever (IMO).

Sean

Was that the night a horn blew on the speakers in the middle of Rods spot Sean?

Coming to the Bass on Sunday, great line up, see you then.

Whoever was Dj'ing December 1969 at The Brit in Nottingham, the DJs never spoke one word so I have no idea who was playing the hour that change my life.

This was my very first experience of a real soul club.

As I walk up the wooden stairs to the sounds of

Al Kent - The Way You've Been Acting Lately

They had my total attention for the rest of the night:

Edwin Starr - Back Street

Jimmy McCracklin - The Walk

Spinners -She's Gonna Love You At Sundown

Jackie Edwards - I Feel So Bad

Major Lance - Investigate

Len Barry - Somewhere

Guy Darrell - I've Been Hurt

J.J. Barnes - Please Let Me In

Jerry Butler - Moody Woman

Dean Parrish - Determination

Jimmy Thomas - Where There's A Will

Invitations - What's Wrong With Me Baby

Hoagy Lands - The Next In Line

Fascinations - Girls are out to get you

Probably doesn't sound like much today, but to a 16 year old out of his hometown at night for the first time, this was the most incredible musical experience I'd wouyld ever experience, it has never been duplicated since.

Absolutely Baz,....on the same tape.of mine..there is I Dont Like To Lose..what a record for its time eh....one of Richard Searling's finest moments...he doesnt get enough credit IMHO about his full contribution to the latter years at Wigan..I have still got a tape somewhere around 1980 when he started to introduce the Modern side of things onto the Casino's playlists.....Delxxx

OH YES [OVER THE TOP ETC]HE WAS THE MAN,THINK A CERTAIN JOHN ANDERSON HELPED HIM OUT ALOT [LOL]AS FOR I DONT LIKE TO LOSE TO ME THAT WITH COUNTRY GIRL WERE THE CASINO AT THE TIME.

Don't think anybody has mentioned his name yet, Mick Smith Nov 100 Club 1999... just played every record I wanted to hear and in virtually the right order..

Also when Ady Crosdell played 'Gettin to me' when Lavine was turning up at the 100 club, actually may have been after he was asked not to come back, anyhow Ady announced it, said "Lavine said he would have put it back and would have never played it, but we do etc..... " and the 100 club went F*** WILD!!!

the rest of the set was a blinder, but that one call to arms rallied everybody...

What a great topic and so good to have mr Manship come in with the lookback to his youth...

Standouts over the years....just tooooooooooooo many...

Roger Banks mid 80s...

Richard Searling at the Ritz rare nights 90s....

Carl Willingham late 90s onwards..Too many sets to mention...but Last Cleethorpes/Dublin/Prestatyn were pretty special indeed

Keith Money oh so many times...Huddersfield all niter really comes to mind...

Gareth x at soul or Nothing 2005 launch night....He played Frank Hutson and took soul to another level...

Adam Lever at the 1st Soul revolution 2007... As Mik Parry said.."Adam was off the radar" for a soul set in the small back room.

Mace at Bidds all niter 2007...He did the last spot and the place really took off..All the right tunes to send the folk home happy, the sign of good dj who looks at the floor...

Nice to see the little mention of That Girl Lynn from Mikey...Quality indeed...

Many many more but my memory aint the best as some of you know......I salute all the djs(well most) who have given me the best times of my life on the dancefloor..

I reckon it would have been that very same night Blake.

We were all blown away and that would have included the speakers!

Look forward to aseeing you Sunday.

Got to 'Ditto' this - It was the second 'SILKS' night at Wellingborough and was an absolute pleasure to see two 'Top Jocks' showing what they can do. This only comes with years of experience and doing it for the right reasons. Thanks again to John and Mark.

Butch, 100 Club, around late 80s playing slap you in the mush northern like:

Mello Souls (C/U Del Larks)

Walter & Ads (C/U G Davis R Tyler)

Diane Lewis C/U

Two plus Two (Servicemen?? C/U)

Prophets One gold Piece

Just Bros Go on and Laugh

Kell Osbourne: Law against Heartbreaker

Tropics

Didn't step off the dancefloor once.

Kitch and Dean, Shotts about 90 - 91.

Just back from the states, bags full of newies, cover ups (some like Ruby Johnson were uncovered weeks later but so what) and underplayed Stafford spins. One enduring sound played that night was covered up as Little Beaver: I just can't speak (played to an almost empty floor may I add), can remember an animated, grinning Jocko running over asking WTF is this???

Apart from the obvious.... Searling at Wigan 1979-1981, the best and most consistent sets I remember were those by Poke at Cleethorpes 1977-1978, awesome records every time. thumbsup.gif

Hi Jo,

This wasn't Paul Dunne's playlist, it was mine.

How do I remember ? A mate of mine took a cam corder & recorded the whole night & i've just sat & watched bits of it. I had hair !:lol:

It was before 2003. I'll have a look later & see if there is a date on the film footage.

Do you remember saying I had to play the Tokays for Paul TP?

Nice seeing all the old faces...Dave Flynn on the dance floor. Do you remember those mods in Parkers & shades from America that came in looking for me. They were trying to look cool, but because it was so dark & they had shades on one fell over a chair.

You then called me & asked me to send you a play list. Had to do it by post as it was before we had a computer. oh dear :D

Regards,

When they asked me to do a second set some 3 years later - my hair had gone!

Have any other guest dj's at TOS lost their hair after appearing there? If so we may have some compensation coming :P

anyway when I did that set I also had hair and I have photos to prove it - you still had some hair at TOS - Soul at the Seaside @ Llandudno...I've found the photos biggrin.gif

I've heard some truly great sets over the years, and albeit I haven't been for a while, the 100 club regulars always did the business for continuity of excellent sets, and more recently the Burnley all-niter which for me on every occasion I've attended, I can honestly say I've enjoyed every single set I've heard and without patronising them I applaud both their enthusiasm and ability to put together well thought out sets which are fresh on the ear,(inclusive of all guests included to date) and makes the 6 hour round trip very very worthwhile......... :(

Guest Gavin Page

Ian Clark/Richard Searling in the tiny northern room at Morcambe weekender (early Southport) in 1989, the infamous £5 breakfast weekender. Pure hero worship that night......awesome

Blake

Ah yes but Paul....what would you rather have? A box full of Shrine records or hair :D I've still got hair as well thumbsup.gif Nick Hackett's set at the 100 Club took some beating - and he's still got hair  Jo

THANKS JO,what an honour that night was.

Not sure bout the full head of hair...its on its way!! I was sat on the stage at the 100 and Roger Banks came along and put his pint on it..thought it was a beer mat!!!

Best set ive ever heard..many stand out but will always remember Carl Willingham at Cleethorpes Weekender about 6am back in 2004 and Jumping Joan at 100 club,Hoss with his gritty RnS & Johnny Weston for not knowing whats next! Mark Bicknell(sheridans)and Keith Williams (marrs bar) for playing 'Make a Change'. Shifty was always awesome at 100 club,Carl Fortnum at Dome,Lifeline 'the entire dj rosta' over the whole weekend, gets no better than that!Steve Cato,Martin Harland and Pete Widdison round your gaff..soul education thanks :P
