If it's so beastly leave the NS scene then, sure we'll survive without you.............

Feck me ragged.

Such a cutting remark from one who goes out on the scene about as often as the Olympic torch.

For what my opinion's worth, I think the little digs at Paul's perhaps slight hypocracy are worth a chuckle, but are misplaced. I think the play's viewpoint was honest, and at times gritty and quite cutting, although I think Saturday Night Fever as a production about clubbing and drugs use, music as a form of escapism for working class yoof etc is better. Perhaps if Paul's play was not abotu norhtern soul, people into norhtern woudl nto look on it so fondly? If it had a back drop of rave music, woudl the story be any diffferent, and I came away feeling like I'd seen it before, probably having lived it when I was a teenager in the early to mid 90s with a backdrop of deephouse, DnB and rare groove?

I think the retro northern crowd should probably get over themself, as they are not so unique, youth music culture and drug taking club culture is pretty similar no matter what era it was, and it's always the same story as Saturday Night Fever.

But this autograph nonsense is laughable to the extreme and should be shot down in flames, really cuntish and totally irrelevent to anythign that is going on today.

I say ignore it, and come down to Brighton on Sunday for the allnighter, it's where all the cool kids are going, no sad autograph hunters allowed in...

' Or the Stanislavskian-system, where the singer creates a believable emotional character inside a naturalised world by drawing on a fund of emotions from previous experience eg. Sam Dees 'Fragile Handle With Care.'

Too much time on your hands I think. Whatever part Sam utilising and recalling his own feelings played in the performance of this track to give a more heartfelt performance, it still sounds like plodding disco to me.

Now if Marlon Brando had cut a version of "Mumbling words". I believe he almost gave up the acting to join a group and always regretted it. It's often said he could have been a Contender but lacked the edge.

Talking of which, I believe he went to The Torch but doesn't like to talk about it... you have to tease it out of him I think.

Why is there so many uncool things happening at the moment?

1. Casino Cafe - What an horrible idea. It makes my stomach twist.

2. The Drifters - We are now having a major weekender booking cabaret acts. If I am right, there isn't one original member alive?

3. Signed photos of John Vincent & Russ Winstanley - Here is offending item in full...'Tickets for ths one are £10 or the VIP ticket which includes Champagne, pizzas, pastas and salad bar in the VIP lounge, then we are having autographed photos with Dean , Russ and John, these tickets are £30'

4. The Ian Levine CD - Everything about this is so wrong. The songs, the production, the markerting and above all it is being pushed by someone who isn't part of the current scene.

I always thought this scene was underground, cool, mysterious, exciting and better than anything else. I think the above examples prove otherwise.

Sad times ahead methinks

Shane

Shane, just my thoughts & opinions on your first post.

1. Doesn't bother me about the cafe. Just another cafe/tearoom named after some local landmark/character. I think what is sad about it is holding a do in a shopping arcade, if it's such a great idea why hasn't anyone tried before? Think it's just a marketing gimmick from the owners/management of the arcade.

2. Have to agree about The Drifters. How many soul sourcers have gone to see them in the past year or so? I wouldn't pay to go and see them, think it would be more Sitting In The Back Row, Under The Boardwalk than Baby What I Mean and You Got To Pay Your Dues. sad.gif

3. I can see people paying money to meet/see Dean Parrish, but I'm not one of them. The rest of it (photos of DJ's, pizza & salad, etc.,) doesn't do anything for me. :D

4. I can't see what market he's aiming for. Tracks are not suited for mainstream success plus title I think is enough to put people off. Think about all the times you've tried to explain what northern soul is to people over the years. Then to have all your friends & work colleagues look at you quizzically.

Last comment about the play (Once Upon A Time In Wigan). I went to see this at the Greenwich Theatre. I have never even been to Wigan let alone the casino (too young tongue.gif ), but I found the play to be very entertaining and an enjoyable evening out. The 2 actors & 2 actresses were excellent. Also the story wasn't just about the casino, I felt that was just the backdrop (excuse the pun) to the story of four different people and their relationships with each other and their outlook on the future.

Sad Times? Are You Justin Collins in disguise or are you more Alan Carr? :D

QUOTE(Bogue @ Aug 21 2007, 02:57 PM) post_snapback.gifRe - the picture signing of Dean Parrish , no different to the hundreds who queue up at Prestatyn or Cleethorps for autographs of the acts is it ? Are they to be ridiculed too then ?

Do you get your picture taken with 70s iconic DJ's as well as the acts at Prestatyn?

Good god no Steve, last autograph i got was 'Curley' the old gezzer who used to sell newspapers at Worcestershire County Cricket Ground , i was aged 9 or 10 Then used the rest of the book to practice my own for when i became a pop star

Hi Paul,

Saw the play twice, once in Manchester and once in Blackpool. Absolutely loved it, and it is a credit to you and your obvious talent. What's more, I would go and see it again if you revived it.

However, this is a forum, and I think a couple of your replies to Ken and Derek were condescending, and not really worthy of someone of your intellect. (Remember it is a forum!)

Going back to Shane's original point, that I have to say puzzled me, why does a Casino Cafe make your stomach twist?

Dont think saying some is an "arse licker" for liking the play is very articulate and is, to me, VERY condecending! And, im sorry, slagging off something " a play is cheesy' without articulating why, is very ignorant, prejudice and condescending! Critisizing the play without seeing it is the ULTIMATE in condescending! A forum is about articulating a point and as you say, it does require intellect. I respond to people with the same respect that they show me.....like life. :wicked:

I have always wondered about these acts that get dragged out for weekenders and the like. How do we know its the real people at all (Those that are still alive that is) and not just some tribute act? I wouldn't know what Dean Parrish, the Drifters, the 4 tops and all the others that have been on round and about look like now...Could just be some big con as far as I`m concerned, but then I`ve never liked live `northern` acts (or dead ones come to think about it!)

There's a lot of accumulated knowledge on the Northern scene and anyone misrepresenting themselves would soon get caught out these days, as would promoters. If I had a group on and only a couple of original members were in then I'd say so. If they weren't the main members I wouldn't book them. But as you say you don't like live acts anyway, I wouldn't worry about it too much if I were you!

I chose not to go and see your play based on the way it was promoted. Not having been to Wigan and frankly having no interest in Wigan other than the music that came from it. Any promotional materials i saw for the play pushed the Casino angle very heavily, based on that i chose not to go as TO ME it appeared to be yet another Casino cash-in.

I chose to spend my money in something i thought was more worthwhile.

Your assumption that i am some kind of intellectual inferior to you says much more about you than me.

only happens when people make uninformed generalisations based on hearsay or ignorance! if you are going to critisize something, make it an informed opinion eg. if you want to slag a play,at least see the play!? Then you can be specific and generate an intelligent response. There seems to be a sort of 'soul masons' response coming from you gentleman!"hear hear" "well said" etc. . Proof being, that this thread was about something else entirely, but got re-directed towards me by forces unknown whistling.gif Sorry if you see me as trying to be intellectually superior....but im not going to dumb myself down in order to respond to your dogma and bravado! IN FULL AGREEMENT WITH SHANE'S COMMENTS,BUT TIRED OF READING PERSONAL ATTACKS.

IF I WANT A COFFEE I GOT TO A CAFE.

IF I WANT TO LISTEN TO SOUL MUSIC,I GO TO A NITE /DAY/WEEKEND OF MY CHOICE.

Counselling to the Soul community? I think that needs a braver person than I laugh.gif

Personally, none of the stuff mentioned is my cup of tea, I think the VIP ticket thing is particularly crass, why not let everyone meet the artists/ DJs and get autographs if that's their thing, it seems to me to be treating the artists more like an exhibit than a person who might want to meet and chat with their fans?

Oh and I also think the forum would be very boring if nobody brought up things that bother them about the scene and how it's progressing (or not!) - it is a discussion forum after all! :)

...how do you know that? Dont see you up north much mate. 1976 is when I started...not that its of any relevence.....just so you know , the world doesn't revolve around London! Its not quantity, its taking in the world around you and absorbing the experience....a bit like music....luckily, im still open to learning and listening. Thats the evolution of mankind mate! "My car is bigger than your car" type attitude merely emphasises the problem of you 'lads' and your dogmatic attitude. There is NO hierachy, so dont try and preach one to me....I dont recognise it. Age and time, as most know, doesn't always equal wisdom. As you so clearly demonstrate. This has been fun, but I have a life to get on with. I hope your disdain for me continues to dominate your life........x

Just in case any one cares, Radio Manchester will be doing a feature on this on Sunday Night, whether it's a broadcast a la ASADAN ain't clear.

Might give a listen out of morbid curiosity.

Any road, just thought I'd throw it in the pot and see who p*sses on it.
