Guest ShaneH
Why is there so many uncool things happening at the moment? 1. Casino Cafe - What an horrible idea. It makes my stomach twist. 2. The Drifters - We are now having a major weekender booking cabaret acts. If I am right, there isn't one original member alive? 3. Signed photos of John Vincent & Russ Winstanley - Here is offending item in full...'Tickets for ths one are £10 or the VIP ticket which includes Champagne, pizzas, pastas and salad bar in the VIP lounge, then we are having autographed photos with Dean , Russ and John, these tickets are £30' 4. The Ian Levine CD - Everything about this is so wrong. The songs, the production, the markerting and above all it is being pushed by someone who isn't part of the current scene. I always thought this scene was underground, cool, mysterious, exciting and better than anything else. I think the above examples prove otherwise. But I did get your point, was only exercising my worped sense of humour in an effect to cheer myself up on this wet grey day. But while we are there, having attended the first hight at wigan and many subsequent nights after, Mr Winstanly was a highly influencial figure during that time and as for living off passed glory, don't all DJs do and don't we all, it is a retrospective scene after all, its hay day was some 25 years + back. Peter99
There's always been "pants" stuff happening on the Northern Soul scene - whether it be the "last, last, last, last, last................ever nighter at Wigan, or some of the absolute shocking records that have been played and hyped up. It's always gonna happen. I don't see anything wrong with wanting to see the likes of Dean Parrish perform - I saw him at Cleethorpes a few years back and felt it was quite a privelege. As for having your picture taken with two RW etc - well yes, it's a bit of a joke. I would not object to a rather large pizza after a night of beer and dancing - saves you having to find a takeway on the way home! Link to comment Social source share

paultp
If they can make money out of it they will do it. This is what the problem is, people with only one aim regarding the scene: to make money. Nobody wants to lose money promoting events and putting artists on etc but most people's main motivation is to have a successful event and a bit of fun or whatever, if they make money too it is the cream on the top. The things Shane mentions are all purely money making schemes of one sort or another and sadly they probably all will make money as there seems to be a lot of gullible people about. The view from my armchair of the scene is one of bickering and squabbling with nostalgia and profit being to the fore. I hope this isn't a correct view and maybe I'll feel better tomorrow. I'm packing my records up at the moment as I'm moving in about a week, I probably won't be seeing them for a month or so for various reasons. I hope that in a couple of months time I have the enthusiasm and energy to get out and about again but at the back of my mind I have the feeling that I've been out of it too long, my records will stay packed for some time and will only surface to go on eBay as other things take my interest. As for the cafe, why does it make your stomach twist? If people want to go, they will go. I went to the Motown Cafe in New York. It was fantastic. The Hard Rock Cafe doesn't worry or bother me one bit, why should a Casino Cafe worry you. I am getting so P....ed off with attitudes on here. People trying to show how cool they are by decrying anything that is not related to "upfront" new 60ts. Everything else is sneered at. Do you all want people to forget, in my case 37 years on the scene, to live a life of inferior newies, give or take 5 - 10 excellent records a year? I love 60ts newies, I am always trying to hear new sounds, but please don't slag off my obsession, my passion, a big part of my life, because it doesn't fit with your viewpoint of the scene. If the scene as it is, with all its good and bad points, fails to be mysterious or exciting enough, why stay on it, because I'll give you one stone fact. You won't change it. Be big enough to ignore things you don't like, don't waste time dwelling on them. Concentrate on what flicks your switches. I don't need someone to tell me whether going to the Casino Cafe is cool or not. I will probably never go to it, but as once said, I will fight to the end to defend other people's right to. macca
I didn't have to pay a single centimo of a euro to meet dean. he was having coffee on a terrace near the hotel I was staying at in madrid. I just walked up to him, stanley style, & said mr. parrish I presume. the promotors david & sergio are friends, so we all went for lunch & later dinner together. we then introduced him to the delights of boquerones (spanish pickled anchovies). we knocked back plenty of sherbet & he regaled us with stories about the early new york scene, with me interpreting where necessary. it was wonderful. dean posed for all & sundry that day & night, signing t-shirts, photos, record sleeves, parts of bodies etc; a gentleman of the highest calibre & a stonking performer to boot. this photo cost bugger all.
