Having been on this scene for nearay 30 years, I would just like to see what peoples opinions are on dj's and dancing. I myself have often heard tunes and thought 'f--k me' how do you dance to that. Then when i've looked to see who's playing it, it's a non-dancing dj. I, personally, only play tunes that inspire ME to dance and hope that others feel the same way! But, I often look up at the decks to see one or, at some venues, ten! people standing around looking at the record admiringly....BUT it does'nt seem to infiltrate their bodies! Im not saying its a pre-requisite of dj'ing, but its an interesting point!

Oops didn't actually reply then. Good question & one that has puzzled me for a while, here in Oz I can't think of a DJ that doesn't dance and I guess this may be summat to do with the fact that first & foremost we are Northern Soul devotees who had to get to learn to DJ to keep the scene alive, rather than the other way round. This doesn't mean we're any better or worse than the pro DJs of course, but I do think Paul has a point - are non dancers more likely to play non dance-friendly records in their sets?

Cheers

Pete

Special mention to one of my favourite dancing Dj's Danny Duggan from Dublin!! Hits the floor after his spot (sometimes literally! ) and definitely does not leave the venue after his spot... Top guy, top dj and still can move out on the floor...

alrite Liam, not too bad yourself mate

Good point, if you go to Stoke you'll see Sean Chapman actually dancing to his own records

(so do the rest of the punters BTW). I have been to some NS venues (especially in the London

area) where DJ's had their backs to the dancefloor while they trawled thru their ever so rare

and valuable records to play. I guess it's not really that important if the DJ dances, the real

issue is, are the money paying punters out on the floor enjoying themselves?

maybe the dj has turned round to change intended next record as he in his own way is reacting to the dancefloor. Obviously its better if there is space next to decks for said record box (promoters please note), that way the glum chap can at least stare over the top of his box and then stare and sort at same time, and if there's a bit of room behind the decks for the fat f*cker to shake his booty even better. Perhaps false noses and funny glasses should be a pre-requisite of all aspiring djs.

I'm guessing that the majority on here are of the thinking that an enthusiastic DJ can add something to a night?

& it seems there are a few DJ's who dance behind the decks to their own spot...

I just wish more would apply that kind of enthusiasm to the other 7 spots of the night.

Don't think we'll ever see djs dancing behind the decks at Hertford Funked Up, Souled Out!

We had one guest recently who had barely enough room to breathe, let alone dance.

(Sorry Toby, couldn't resist that)

Haven't read all the comments on this but in my opinion the best djs are those that dance, obviously there are those who can't dance, and those who wont dance for whatever reason and some we don't want to see dance.

It seems to me that those that do dance have a sense of getting the feel of a night rather than just banging tunes on. Some djs need to keep their heads out of their boxes while they are djing and spend more time watching whats happening on the floor. After 35 years on the scene (of and on) I still want to get on the dance floor and see a dance floor full, after all what sort of a soul night is it when everbodys either standing around twiddling their thumbs or watching which record is coming on next.

Some of the poor DJ's are very old men, who are well up past their bedtime.

We shouldn't be expecting them to be hopping round the place at four in the morning. They might do their hips an injury or something :D:lol:

Don't give a foooooooooooooook if they dance or not as long as they make me wanna dance and rock my soul.....They can be blind, on stumps, deaf and dumb.....Yes many are pretty long in the tooth and not on the same medication as others..Thats something to think about too
