Mark Bicknell
My lad's just turned 11 we got him a set of decks for Christmas as he loves music, adores 'The Temptations' plus all his Hip-Hop and other stuff which he's discovered for himself but I would not let him anywhere near a Northern gig until he was old enough to make up his own mind about his musical taste, I'm all for him being interested in music and will encourage that as I think it's an important part of life to discover and have a passion for music whatever style it might be? as for young kids being influenced by the parents and turning up to gigs in baggy trousers etc. patches on shirts and so on well it's more a sad reflection of the parent/s rather than the chid to be honest, let them find their own way rather than being false fed it and kind of pushed into what will only be a fad for the child rather than anything long term. I do see the other side of the coin if the young person is a genuine convert which should be encouraged but again not directed or pushed by the parent/s. Regards - Mark Bicknell. Quite right old chum! Letting a 12yr old girl into a northern venue, let alone behind the decks, is wrong in so many ways it borders on the obscene."Not a novelty act"? true, its far worse. I have not devoted 35yrs of my life to this scene to see it turned into a sick version of a 'Whacky Warehouse'! My little girl likes soul to a certain extent...she has her favourites like Brown Sugar and the more up tempo 70s tracks but I would never force it on her...I like to encourage her to have individual musical taste and be able to discover all kinds of music and she does have quite broad taste to some extent. Unfortunately, she does like quite a lot of very crap pop....the latest craze is the devil that is HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL.....if anybody reading this has a daughter of a similar age they will understand I took her to the Neighbourhood All dayer one year..we went for a couple of hours in between the pleasure beach and harry ramsdens! She had a bit of a dance and laughed her socks off at a young lad about 12 in a vest and flares!!! "Not a good look"...said Georgia!! Link to comment Social source share
