Paul Mooney It was "THE" magazine to buy if you were into soul music back in the 70T's 1000's of us headed North after reading Godins articles. Haven't seen a copy for yonks, guess the NS fratenity left it behind with dex, Brut and leather soled shoes............................. Link to comment Social source share
Guest Darks
Blues & Soul magazine has ceased and their publisher is in receivership. After more than forty years, it's a sad loss. Paul Mooney Was an avid reader since the late 70s and accumilated many of the classic issues from before. Then a few years ago I just stopped buying it. I became one of those sad fcks you see in W H Smith who you see reading the best bits but not supporting the magazine! Can't really remember why I stopped buying it I guess it just did'nt have what I wanted anymore. Essential reading for many years and still a point of reference. Agreed, it is a shame. Baz Atkinson
Yep very sad in the seventies[ i started to pick it up in 78 ]while at school it was the back pages for the playlists for the casino etc.I always bought the mag right up till it was rebranded ,then i just thought it had lost its edge. You see this alot in publishing well established mags -big cash injection, directors driving mercs then cash flow down the pan. I always will remember it for the way it supported the scene i even kept copies of when my playlists were in round about 96 when it gave the catterick soul dos a great write up. Part of northern history ,it would be good if someone could attach the awesome Dave Godin articles of the early to mid seventies ,just loved reading them, quoting our brothers and soul sisters up north. Paul Mooney Yet another "end of an era" I guess. Shame. Blues & Soul was crucial reading in the early 70's for a whole Soul generation and it's signifance to the fledgling Rare Soul scene shouldn't be underestimated. BAZ A Early 7T's used to read it all the time, and visit their "sales office" in Hanway St. Used to search for vinyl purely on the names of artists listed in the ads for events up north. Bumped into Dave Godin in a Berwick St record shop once (ony recognised him from his litte stamp sized pic in B&S) and still got the vinyl he pulled out the box for me. Happy days. Geoff
For sentimental reasons I am sorry to hear it is closing down. But like many others I haven't looked at it for years. I suppose the problem is that soul music covers a wide variety of styles, not that many who like current records who also like, for example, proper R&B; and vice versa. The Northern and 70s Modern scenes are probably fairly small compared to more recent styles that fit into current night clubs as well. It appears NSoul has finished, Manifesto is still being published, In The Basement is a well produced and readable magazine, but covers most areas, certainly not exclusively Northern. I know there are other magazines available, but it would be helpful if someone could list them, and how to get them. I used to have loads of Blues and Soul's from the 60s, think they got lost when I got married and moved out of my Mum and Dad's house. Wish I still had them, certainly would be an interesting read. Do they ever appear in auctions, and what do they go for? Link to comment Social source share

I'll sort Martyns address out & post it though I have 2 copies left of the last issue for sale £4 plus postage. Top read Blues & Soul ? See Dave Rimmers comments tho essential reading in the 70s. I've about 10 years worth from '71 onwards, anyone wanna make an offer for 'em? Need the space Edited August 9, 2007 by SHSDave Link to comment Social source share

Tomangoes
If I remember correctly, 50 something YO John Benson, (South Yorks DJ/Collector) told me HIS MAM, had an article published in B&S in one of the first issues when she was into early 60s soul music. I suppose along with Black Echoes it was the 'Soul-Source.co.uk' of its time and a sad loss if only for nostalgia's sake. Ed Link to comment Social source share

Ian Seaman
It had a re launch not so long ago, i was in Dave Raistricks coffe shop in Smeggy and he was giving it away, they had sent him loads of copys to pass around to try and get it back in circulation. I read the last 4 issues cover to cover and have to admit it was crap, probably less then a small paragraph on Northern Soul, very disapointing from what it was to a lot of us in the 70's. Sad loss. Ian. Link to comment Social source share

Guest Netspeaky
Sure it's lost it way, but Blues & Soul as a brand name could still be commerical viable, if someone could purchase the name and maybe go back to it's roots as a subscription only magazine covering real soul music, still lots of it being produced out there, as well as covering northern/motown/stax/deep/funk/blues/R&B and whatever others fit, I'm sure all us guys who gave it up in the late 70's early 80's, maybe tempted to take a subscription out, and make it a success again. "There's that Beat" , Manifesto and others show there's a market out there if it's done correctly. Link to comment Social source share

Steve G
Agreed I was also jealous of the guy that owned it, John Abbey, who married Tamiko Jones of 'Spellbound' fame. Not sure if it was sexual allure or Ric Tic demos that got me excited, I was young then. You must have been as I've never seen a Tamiko Jones record on Ric Tic.... Perhaps you're getting old Stuart! 100 lines of "Golden World is my favourite label" for you young man.... Anyway I think B&S lost it's way, lost direction, and couldn't keep up with the changing face of the music - either current dance music or "heritage soul" whatever that means. It didn't cover either properly and was in it's latter days very poor. So whilst it's sad that it's gone, that's only based on it's past glories. It was unmable to adapt to the changing market, and had become irrelevant, so I am not shedding any tears over it's demise. Harsh maybe, but I've had a very hard day today....
