Whats Your Most Sick Of Hearing Or Hated! Overplayed Oldie

Glad those days are over but amazingly i still meet the odd one or two people that talk like they have just stepped out of a time machine from 1983 and seem not to realise that the rest of us just don't give a toss any more :P .

You might not give a toss Matt but some of us still like to keep the standards high & do genuinely have more of an interest in the music other than just hearing the tune at a venue.

Can I have your 'battered to death' copy of the vangaurds cheep now Paul :P

M.

.....well, theres the thing. Not only is it battered...its really expensive TOO!!! laugh.gif Not saying it wasn't or isn't a good tune. Its just that rather than treating these tunes with respect and nurturing them, because the dj has paid a zillion quid for it, we are going to hear it every bloody time they are on. Sometimes , if three have it, were going to hear it three times in one night. Thats not a "good time" for me :D

You misunderstand me Simon.

I didn't say i didn't have standards and didn't want to hear quality sounds and rarely played stuff, that's my preference in fact. What i don't give a toss about is someone giving me lecture on what i should be listening to. I'm not an eager to please 17 year old anymore so i can take or leave people who feel they have to prescribe what i should listen to.

That clearer? :P

Much clearer thanks Matt, sorry if i came across too aggressive i just think it's very easy to call people soul police etc. & to not appreciate that some of these people are the very ones who kept the scene going through the leaner years & have constantly strived to find new & exciting sounds for me & you to dance to, i just think some peeps are too lazy or just ignorant to understand this fact.

I agree with you that i don't want lectures from people also but i am interested to hear the views & the knowledge of certain peeps.

I agree with all that you say. I always took 'soul police' as a derogatory term as well for those people who use their knowledge and collections as weapons to put people down and talk down to others on the scene. Like i say, things are a lot nicer these days and there seems to be less of that nasty 'i'm more soulful cos i know more than you' crap. I don't consider the record hunters and those with vast collections and knowledge who never gave up and actually share it to be the soul police (people like Mark Freeman for example). As you say they do us all a favour and we're better off for having them.

This makes me laugh, what you forgot Simon to add is it also often thrown at people who dare to comment when a record with no remote relation to soul is included in that genre, or the worse type of Northern is praised "because it fills the dance floor", but Simon's description, of people who care, put it in perspective.

As one who in my early days on here was often accused of being a member I would counter its often a tired and innefective insult doled out by people with little confidence in their own taste, by the sheep who want all the same records they heard in 1973/1983/1993 [delete whichever is not the year they first went to a do], by people who have returned to the scene after an excess of 20 years absence and seem to take offense when people show their knowledge or dont want to hear the same records as them as they have been played constantly over those 20 years, or people who just generally dont get the ethos of the rare soul scene and prefer their local soul nights for local people which they just happen to DJ at.Oh and they always say they were only joking afterwards.******

Matt your's is the funniest, I think you are really meaning the Tommo's, Oz's, Pete Lawsons of those days. You are also confusing their playfulness [or bullying depending on how they took you] with the vast majority of peoples [including them when they weren't being mad] love for the music and interest in more than getting pished at their local soul night. am not condoning all their behaviours but when they were on form musically they knew their stuff, and oh they could have fun also, Bit of an oxymoron [sic] think Matt. I hardly think Guy H or Tim Finch Dave Withers,Dave Thorley etc etc who came to prominence in the 80's fit your description. Sounds like you, like many others didnt get it then, And if that was the soul police then FFS they hardly fit Jo's description. The most annoying bit is the assumption "anoraks" or whatever is todays playground insult cant have fun, you obviously weren't paying attention were you.

The rare soul scene has always been about record collecting, and knowledge, get over it, again my only assumption is this is an insult levelled by people who are intimidated by that knowledge and love of the music. The fact the the majority of todays scene more resembles the British Legion type scene of the 80's (and dont mean soul do;s at them!) rather than any soul scene i recognise may play a part.

i dont often get involved in such debates on here as they very rarely reflect reality but this one has me particularly dismayed, when a top promoter and top DJ throw around such tired stereotypes, i would suggest that many DJ's at your do's Andy would include themselves in the description if its levelled at anoraks. Its due to the attitidues expressed in here i rarely attend these days.

And Jo yes there are two types for me, general soul fans and Northern fans, would suggest the second most relevant to here, so would love a better explanation of whats bad and whats good/.

And yes am ranting, having a crap morning in a crap place and this just reminds me why i realised in mid 90's this scene (or scenes plural as it really is) is not the place i want to be part of.

Off for a pint of Buckfast.

A bit pompous and patronising that. Am i going to be tested on this later? :P I wish i'd remembered everything Tommo told me now...

We're just having a laugh about the soul police and you come over all po-faced and insulting. You need to lighten up mate. tongue.gif

Seriously though i didn't mention any names and the people you mentioned weren't who i had in mind then or now. I wouldn't have the interest in soul that i have if it wasn't for Tommo and Bunny and Gilly and Mick Cope and Rich Hall etc... and their dedication and instinct. They dug deeper and further and for longer than anyone. It's true i spent more of my time dancing than going through record boxes but I liked Tommo, he was a good bloke (and like you say very, very funny). I think the worst i ever got from Tommo was being called 'not shiny' (matt geddit?) and can't remember ever having a conversation with Pete Lawson, although he was around, so no scars i'm afraid Jock.

Sure had lots of fun, maybe a bit too much sometimes :D which is one of the reasons i can never remember anything thesedays.

Jock, hopefully my brain isn't too mashed and the following sounds coherent...

Bad Soul Police:

Still stuck in their own time warp. Won't accept anything that's gone before or after and are generally negative about everything and everyone.....tell you your set was crap, the dancefloor was crap, the promoter was crap etc without coming up with constructive remarks on how to improve on any of the above....I'm always open to suggestions to make things better.

Good Soul Police:

Open minded people who embrace change yet respect the musical heritage of the scene. People who do lucid reports on venues and tunes that have floated their boat with a positive and supportive approach. I wish I could split myself like an atom and be at every gig every weekend and draw my own conclusions. But that isn't possible and I rely on other peoples suggestions - venue wise and track wise....people who share their knowledge and who have a laugh....

Anyway, I'm a total 'anorak' and proud of it.....

I think that's what I mean anyway :P I'll go back to my barcodes.... :D Jo

Simon, I think there are 2 different genres of Soul Police at work......the Good and the Bad.....anyway, I'm finding this a great post - peoples tastes aren't that different. A lot of similar choices being made...keep 'em coming :P Jo

Ok, I will - me and most of the rest of the soul world could cheerfully survive without ever hearing "Make Sure" again, for a start.... :Dlaugh.giflaugh.gif:wave::lol::lol:

With out the collectors and knowlage the dance floor would be like a wedding do at every venue playing the same 'availiable' sounds, and the dancefloor drive's the knowlagable to find the next bit thing surley?

Very well written and some excellent points there jocko and i have no doubt you are very sincere in what you say.But the two statements ,intimidated by people of knowledge, and, people who generally dont get the ethos of the rare soul scene, sum up the soul police perfectly for me.The reality is that some dont see it your way and comments like that piss people off big time. You quite rightly point out that the guys who worked hard in the eightys to keep the scene alive deserve great credit, whilst some had the audacity to take breaks from the scene.Fact is this scene is for everybody and means so much to so many in lots of different ways, neither the oldies crew nor the rare and underplayed crew have any rights on owning the scene, without one there wouldnt be the other.I do honestly belive there is an element amongst the rare underplayed crew that look down on the rest of the scene, but these are just my own opinions which mean very little in the great scheme of things.Good point about the djs that do my gigs some are fully fledged members of tsp,but i dont pick djs cause there my buddies its because there good, and your right i shouldnt have said only joking because i wasnt. There are an awful lot of returnees to this scene who are working just as hard as the guys from the 80s to make this a good scene for everyone not just certain sections.

Stick with Lou Rawls (no matter how 'over-played' ya-de-da etc etc.) Getting the Chuck Corby ain't gonna extend your enjoyment of the track (IMO of course). It's same meat, different gravy really. Plus someone will probably try to stiff you for daft money for it. (Henry had a job lot and used to knock them out for about a tenner each I think. He might still have some).

Played that at one of GT's Brighouse bun-fights once. Half the crowd wanted to have me elevated to saint-hood, half the crowd wanted to have me rubbed out. Forever.

I reckon I could have split the crowd half and half like they used to do at pantomimes with one side of the hall cheering and one side booing. Now there's an idea for a night...............(Oh no it's not.....Oh yes it is....)

I actually quite luck Willie Hutch's "The Duck" ohmy.gif and view it as one half of a classic double header

As for Lou Rawls / Chuck Corby lets be blunt about it, neither is brilliant, it's just that Chuck Corby has more of an earthy feel to it.
