Guest CapitolSC Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 Very Very SAD NEWS Mate Our sundays will never be the same 8 till 10 dancing round the living room. And all those great tunes id never heard before the Chimes on down to earth, the Hollywood flames on Symbol, the Star-tells the list goes on And not forgetting when you get into your mid-tempo groove Rose St John and the Companions last night But everything comes to an end and as you said youll be able ta get out and about a bit more which will be great. We shall be listening to the bitter end Mark Cheers for years of great soul music on the radio Al H

Hiya, A fond memory I have of your shows involves one of your regular guests planning for several days beforehand how he was gonna try and make you completely split your sides laughing at a real inconvenient moment. It used to really make his day if he could make you crack up into hysterics.. LOL.. but I didn't tell you that!!. Jayne.x

Makemvinyl Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 Mark, putting aside our 'the listeners' selfish reasons for wanting Soul Shack to continue until we turn to dust, things come to pass. Far from sounding stale or stilted, you have managed to maintain a feeling of passion and enthusiasm for the life of the show - this coming from someone who worked on a radio show, 6 days a week, for 4 years. So I know how difficult it is for you to smile and say 'it's showtime' every Sunday....have a rest, put your feet up and rejuvinate your soul batteries.....and behind the scenes, you never know what offers will turn up. Chin up Mark - you've 'kept the faith' for 7 long years and had the vehicle to share your love of the music with others. We salute you. Jo xx WE at Newark agree and also salute your years of endeavour and wish you all the best in any new venture you take on go on push the Beeb for a national show.

Very kind words mate but BBC material I ain't, I think you have to have a far greater understanding of radio and a little more talent than somebody like me but it's a nice thought. Steve Plumb Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 Just come back from a two week holiday where the internet connection was slow and expensive, so i've not had chance to get on soul-source. I am absolutely gutted to hear this sad news! Sunday's 8pm-10pm either listening live or listening a coupla days later via Sky+ are a highlight of my week. Can i echo what everyone has said Mark, you'll be sadly missed! Congratulations on the last 7 or so years of quality, passionate radio presenting. Speak to you soon mate Cheers Steve
45cellar Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 (edited) WE at Newark agree and also salute your years of endeavour and wish you all the best in any new venture you take on go on push the Beeb for a national show. The B.B.C. found their way to host a few shows during the Year & New Year one off. "All Singing, All Dancing, All Night" How about a regular weekly Show for a couple of hours like Soul Shack All Year. Missed Opportunity Beeb. All these Radio Stations, They play music 24 Hours a Day, but somehow manage to neglect the Best Music ever made. Strange. Edited August 20, 2007 by 45cellar
Mark Bicknell Posted August 20, 2007 Author Posted August 20, 2007 (edited) Well two more shows to go and that's it folks, end of an era for me at least....lol can promise a top show this coming Sunday with my final guest Mr Dave Greet...awesome tuneage, thanks for all your kind comments, many Emails and phone calls, I have four A4 sheets of paper full of people to thank and name check on the final show going out on Sunday September 2nd so it should be a good final show. One or two people have asked me if there is going to still be Norhtern based show on the station after I finish? well I can't answer that one as I simply don't know?, what I will say is if someone does take it on then I wish them every success with it for future and please support them if there is a similar show lined up, embrace it, cheerish it and support it because when it ain't there it's simply too late. As for getting onto a major station like the BBC etc. well if I had to work to a playlist then to be honest I would sooner not bother doing it, mainstream means just that and playing Stax, Atlantic, Motown etc. as good as that music is has never been what 'The Soul Shack' has been about, it's always been free style and free from being told what to play, I went with the flow and tried to contribute something unique so going backwards just for the sake of being on radio simply does not interest me and I'm not claiming what I have done on Solar has been cutting edge far from it I've simply tried to play quality music every Sunday and think that sometimes I hit the spot. Look forward to the next two shows, however, sad that it is the final two.

Look forward to the next two shows, however, sad that it is the final two. I'm not saying that all radio stations would hold you to a playlist but the bigger picture would perhaps mean a more commercial appeal and as I say 'The Soul Shack' has always been free style with no constraints. Regards - Mark Bicknell. Ps - The Dave Greet show is going to be a blinder this coming Sunday....top tuneage selected by Dave for the two hours.
Mark Bicknell Posted August 27, 2007 Author Posted August 27, 2007 It's with regret that after giving it a great deal of thought and consideration I have just sent Solar an Email expressing that due to several reasons and issues I would like to finish presenting 'The Soul Shack', the main reasons are the constant funding issues and the fact that recently I feel I have been going through the motions and the show is suffering because of it, I have been in this frame of mind for several months and there are no other outside influence or reasons behind this. I hope to present a few more shows to say farwell and thank all the loyal and dedicated 'Friends Of The Soul Shack' special thanks to all the sponsors and donations over the years, thanks to the many record companies for all the promo and preview CD's and 45's, thanks to the many Guest DJ's and collectors who have been on the show over almost seven years. I've enjoyed every minute of presenting the show, it's been a special buzz but I feel I can't take it any further and because of the various issues I have no other option but to finish. I would like to thank Tony Monson, Keith Renton and all at Solar for giving me the chance to play a few tunes on a Sunday night, I'm sure there will be another Northern based show on the station so please support whoever takes over www.solarradio Special big thank you to Mike and all on 'Soul Source' for letting me plug and beg at times on here. Special big thanks to John Manship, Steve Plumb, Universal Music, Kevin Cox, Rob Moss, Andy and Paula Crane, Dave And Val Box, The Attic Boys, Dean, Garry, Kev and Steve from Mansfield, Paul And Sue from Doncaster, Keith Williams, Chris Waterman - 'New Century Soul Club', Ady Croasdell, Tony Rounce and all at Ace/Kent, Tim Brown at Anglo American, Andy McCabe - 'Soultown', Neil Jones/Jayne Malone - 'North Manchester Soul Club', Paul Donnelly and all at 'Different Kettle Of Fish', Stuart Cosgrove, The Orwell Boys - Flanny, Steve C, Steve P and Barry, Jo Wallace, Sean Chapman, all the many independent donations and sponsors and 'Friends Of The Soul Shack', Dave Greet, Alan Eames, Garry J. Cape and John Anderson at Grapevine 2000, Dave Moore - 'There's That Beat Magazine' and many others who have tuned in, supported and helped me along the way since November 2000.Sorry if I have forgotton anyone but they know who they are. Thanks to everyone out there for the many Emails, requests, mentions and dedications over the years and for the wonderful direct personal feedback out and about at the gigs. I'm sad to finish but feel it's the right thing to do, all things have a shelf life and I think 'The Soul Shack' has come to the end of the road for the reasons I've stated. Just heard from Eddy Edmondson and it seems he will be taking over to present a Northern based show on Solar starting from September 8th, all the very best to you Eddy I hope it works out. Regards - Mark Bicknell. I thought you would all like to know that Eddy Edmondson will be taking over with a Northern based show on Solar starting on September 8th, just like to wish him well and I trust you will show him all your support. Regards - Mark Bicknell.
