Guest Posted November 22, 2007 Posted November 22, 2007 Morecombe was my first allnighter,, I was from Preston and would come down with a lot of the Preston lot, I was designated the driver I used to come down with Sharon, Margret and others, my ex used to be on the scene, Johnny Duncan and his brother Dave. I did not really meet many people as I used to dance all night, in fact I didn't even speak to me mates till morning hahahah. I remember one night we were all dancing and there was a huge storm and the pier was rocking and rolling but we all just kept on dancing. I was hooked then and until I moved to the USA 8 yrs ago I was still going to nighters, weekender's and soul nights. Denise
Guest soulmaguk Posted November 22, 2007 Posted November 22, 2007 Think i went to that stormy one on the pier that night, i was with a few lads from Scarborough, remember being really paranoid most of the evening.
TheBigO Posted November 22, 2007 Posted November 22, 2007 Ah yes, he swaying in the wind adding that something extra to the dancing!!! I remember well one of my mates 'indulging' in the charms of a female behind the curtains on the main stage whilst his missus was chatting with Mr Farley not 2 feet away on the decks! Loads of great memories of Morecombe and as has been stated not really given the praise it deserved as it was ceratainly THE venue for 3 years. Mr Gibbons has video tape that would be great to see after all these years as many of the old Firm have now gone sadly. I'll try and scan my pics in, those that I have, and post sometime soon on here.
Andyontherock Posted June 15, 2008 Posted June 15, 2008 Remember the pier very well, used to take a mini bus of soulies up from Leicester on a regular basis, was hell of a drive there and back, but well worth it. I saw a couple of live acts there, and I think it was the three regrees (correct me if i'm wrong). I can remember that there used to be poole tables as you came in, and this one night there was a really fit bird playing poole that was wearing a black string vest top with no bra, and here nipples poking out through the holes,"what an audience she got" . I can remember the toilets well, seeing the sea through the bog. I can remember the night that Keb Darge did a fantastic set that didn't go down to well with all the holiday makers that used to go, and have fantastic memories of him telling eveyone to f*** off. My worst memorie was winning a T.V. in the raffle at one of the anniversaries and having to go on stage to accept it Ahhhhhhh. The other was on the way back to Leicester in my mini bus and getting to Woodville, changing gear and the gearstick desapeared from my hand. I phoned the rac and told them dont bother sending out your man in the van, just send the recovery vehicle " my engine and gearbox is in the road" I got home at about 6.00 the next day and when they pushed my minibus of the ramp one of the wheels ran right over my foot...... ...... Does any one remember Ray Evans from Wales. he was a good friend of mine and I can rember he used to do the odd spot at Morcambe every now and again. Happy times and great memories, have some pics somewhere will have to fish them out Andy Newman

Rogermoff Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 I remember Andy Porter from Kendal well. I went from Barrow with all the usual suspects from the age of 17 and I loved it. Steve Whittle was the man and the Starlight room the place. I moved to Kendal soon after and used to DJ at Kendal Cricket Club with Kev Sowerby from Penrith. Started DJing at the CYC in Barrow and then moved on to Scorpio, the 99 and several other venues too. Almost all of the Little family used to go, along with Little Scouse, Faz and one night all 3 children of the drummer from Chapter 5 were dancing to You Can't Mean It.............few people know they were a Barrow band. Great memories. I also remember Wullie from Scotland, and especially Gilbert Denny from Kircudbright, who was the spitting image of Oor Wullie from the Sunday post. Anyone who remembers please get in touch. KTF

Guest Posted September 11, 2008 Posted September 11, 2008 I remember going up to the pier with Keith Bradey one night in his ford escort van, it was pissing down when his windscreen wipers stopped working. So I clambered through the passenger window and worked them by hand for the 60 or so miles, got there absolutely drenched but not in a caring mood Funny thing is I was listening to radio 5 Live a few months ago when they were doing a phone in for the strangest thing you have seen on a motorway when someone rings in and says I once say a white ford escort van one rainy night ......... Those were the days

As I say, bit of a 'cloudy' mind back then, never really sure where i was (or what planet i was on ). I also wonder who the girl is? - I have absolutely no recolection of her, even though I am sat next to her (I'm wearing the tie)

Paul-s Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Great venue...used to go in early 80,s. remember it wobbling when the floor was packed with people 'stomping'.!
Reg Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Actually I've just remembered, when I went home sometime in the mid 80's Tommy, Hank , Avron and myself went down to Morcambe. The first person I saw when we walked in was Malcolm, still wearing a red vest! He always danced near the front at Wigan towards the right hand side of the stage. Long hair, did an up and down type of step as opposed to side to side. He was really pleased to see us, as we were him. I don't actually remember anything else about the night I think it was good though! Just saw this, Una - Malcolm Talcum is still around! I saw him at Bury a couple of years ago. He still wears the vest and does the "unusual" dance :-)
Barry Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 Keith Brady playing, was it, 'The Starlight Room' when you first walked in. Gibbons' whole family, Gran, nephews etc working everything from the cloakroom to serving tea. Janice Thorpe (ex-Wigan stomper) from Leigh, still stomping (8 months pregnant) on the little dancefloor toward the back. The night when the skinheads kicked off outside. The big old pub over the road from the Pier, what was it called, where we all used to meet up. I could go on but I'll spare you it. Great memories of a wonderful time and place.

I'm getting a tad misty eyed here but the Pier nighter was musically positioned (mid eighties, which coincided with large attendances at Soul and Funk venues) for so much more, at the time anyhow, current (modern) stuff to get played and be accepted more readily than previous nighters. Alexander O Neal - 'What's Missing', Luther's - 'I'll Let You Slide', The Dells - 'Don't Want Nobody' etc etc - but on the flip you'd still have a full floor to Roscoe & Friends - 'Broadway Sissy' Or a Vibrations track. Morecambe had a sassy, clued up crowd that were out to enjoy their soul music. I may have my rose tinted specs on but there seemd to be very little, in comparison, politics at that time.

Professorturnups Posted March 19, 2009 Posted March 19, 2009 Went to Morecambe on the train from Norwich once. Two lads got on near Manchester and looked like Soulies but were speaking in Welsh. Suddenly one of them said the words "John Anderson" and carried on in Welsh so we realised that they were also going to the Nighter! Mark C

We were on that infamous video- me, pickle, willie mercer from Scotland to name a few, on stage in the dance comp. They interviewed us afterwards (never broadcast) & asked me "Where do you get all your energy from to dance all night ?" I says "The tunes, the crowd, the atmosphere, the soul..." Pickle, stuttering as usual, just points to some lad & says "I bought mine off him over there". Nearly pissed myself. & those alternative scooter run niters in '84 were held at the Broadway Hotel, just up the prom as you turn off toward the M6. "Marathon 12 hour allnighters & lunchtime spinner winners" run by Keith Wilcox & Marco of P'boro Fleet / Wirrina fame. Remember it well. Some random old geezer (who nobody'd ever seen before) kept buggin' a very, very off his tits Keith Wilcox for a DJ spot with his tiny box of truely shite tunes. "Fuckin' tunes" shouts Keith every time he asks. About 6 in the morning he asks again "Can i have a spot then mate ?" Ravin' & mad pissed off Keith snatches the box off him & frisbies them one by one across a packed dancefloor "Fuckin' tune", "Fuckin' tune", "Fuckin' tune". I had to laugh.

Guest John Dotters Posted July 12, 2010 Posted July 12, 2010 (edited) Hey Sheila, passed on your message to Tank today infact had us talking for ages about days gone by anyways, the little girl you were on about was Karen Denwood who at the time was going out with Martin Brogan and also had an excellent record collection, spoke to her on my last visit back home n she was telling me she still had every 1 of her records in her loft ha ha she was also an avid MUFC supporter and followed them all over the place lol. Anyways hope your keeping well and nice to know your still about. how strange if we've been the same places and missed each other lol KTF..............Sue Theobald Sue Theobald, now theres a blast from the past.
