Guest Polyvelts Posted August 2, 2007 Posted August 2, 2007 I've become a tad obsessed recently with this great singer song writer and his various outings on Bomar, Paula, ICA, Cancer and Modern. Does anyone know if he recorded for any other labels. Did he ever cut an album ? Is the great man still even with us, I hope he is and still recording !! Any recent sightings of the great Mr Gilliam ?
Sean Hampsey Posted August 2, 2007 Posted August 2, 2007 Underrated vocalist in the Jerry Butler mould. A Johhny Gilliam was leader of the Marvelettes Road Band in the 60's. I don't know if its the same artist. Did you know he also wrote the superb "How Can I Say I'm Sorry" (J. Ruffin). Apart from the obvious rarities, I've always rated his ICA sides "Thank You For Loving Me" and "Come Back Carol" circa '78. Pretty Positive that he never did an LP. Sean

Guest Posted August 2, 2007 Posted August 2, 2007 He was also J.G. Lewis on IX Chains ("Let the Music Play")... Can't Believe That Mr. Rounce Didn't Mention The Modern (#1052) Release Of "You Make Me Feel Like Someone"! Nice Version That.
Guest Polyvelts Posted August 2, 2007 Posted August 2, 2007 Didnt know about the JG Lewis connection ! Gonna check that one out. Love Come back Carol on ICA, but my fave has to be 'Won't someone help me' Paula, a really moving deep slowie.

Garethx Posted August 3, 2007 Posted August 3, 2007 Polyvelts: I agree that Won't Someone Help Me is an awe-inspiring record. Probably my favourite Gilliam 45 too. It's also available on Cancer as well and still dirt cheap despite being brilliant and not too commonplace.
