back in 1970 when l was a boy l used to go the NAGS HEAD at WOLLASTON northants where they used to play soul and motown but it was not really a soul club just the place to go at that time. One night some lads from Manchester came down with their Barathea blazers with the Twisted Wheel embroidered on the pocket and baggy skinner jeans ,they were on thier way to BLETSOE allnighter how cool did they look to a 14 yr old ME. When l first walked into the TORCH the same year and saw these lads again in SKINNERS with T- SHIRTS with thier TORCH badges on it really just blew me away.... the music the whole shebang. However, almost 40 years on it just seems to me faintly ridiculous to see 50 year+ people still dressing as if they were teenagers .... l have been on this scene 38 yrs without a break... there is no one more passionate about it than me. But whenever l talk to anyone who has heard of the NORTHERN scene but is not on it, they always say to me what do you wear, can you do the northern dance. there is a general view of the soul scene being a bit of a joke because the wearing of these badges , baggy trousers ect makes it so. When l talk of serious soul venues its because they seem to be frequented by people who left this stuff behind in the 70,s but truly still love SOUL music , this is not an elitist view just what l see as sense.... you don't need a uniform to love the music

a good point well made Terry, i totally agree with you on this, however, you can't blame Joe Public for having the stereotypical view of Northern Soul being all about vests /patches & baggies etc, because as you said, they were not on the Soul scene, but thats probably the view that every T.V. documentry has given them e.g. This England etc!!

i too think that the baggies et al, look ridiculous today, with 40inch bottoms meeting 40inch waists, but i know others that love wearing them & as it's not life threatingly important, who cares?? Wether we like it or not, these clothes will always remain intertwined with our soul history, as will Scooters, Wigan Casino etc, etc.

just remember Terry, you have your right to your opinion, as others do to their's, that's why forum's such as these work well, your points are well made & passionate, but you ruin it for me when you take digs at other people because their points differ from your's.

so what if someone never went to Wigan, neither did I, but i have done a lot of the well known others, doesn't make me anyless of a soul fan i.m.h.o. & that's what it's all about................opinions!!

cheers,

john mc.

Exactly, each to their own etc etc I have younger friends (im 38) who love to see the patches / baggies etc especially at venues like Stoke where there is actually a feeling of excitement as you walk through the door and you are hit by the heat and the music, and confronted by a packed dancefloor, much better than walking into some dull, badly lit working men's club(or similar)and feeling like you have gatechrashed a middle aged wedding reception with everybody in their best 'slacks' and casual jumper...! I genuinely dont mean to offend anybody, but as i said earlier, it is always the normal Norman brigade who try and dictate how people should dress and i for one find this kind of conformist attitude laughable and very, very, very dull!

Each to their own, the scene is big enough for all factions, and trouser widths!

the only reason l have a dig at certain people on this site is not because they never went here or there it's because they like to invent a past for themselves that just never was. it matters not were a person went....but there are to many that lie to somehow give themselves some cred (usually fake dj's or dodgey promoters) because they stupidly think it matters....only people on this scene however old they are or wherever they went as long as they're honest joe's they're the folk for me

good reply, but that's my point..............stop having a dig at them, as it only brings you down to their level!! If certain people have "invented" a soul past in order to attain some sort of credability, then they are the sad ones are they not? Those that did attend will surely know that anyway??

let them be "fake" dj's or "dodgy promoters", cause if that is true, then the paying public will soon find out!!

i am hoping to be @ Rushden on sat night, why......cause i'm interested in what it will be like, as previous Rushden do's have generally been good......if someone turns up in baggies & patches, then it will not bother me, as i'm there for me to enjoy it, not worry what others have or have not done.

hope you enjoyed Burnley, and lets hope that sat night is a good one.

cheers,

john mc.

have agree with you there :P i personaly like the quirkyness of the soul scene and think it's of the things that makes it so good and interesting

i saw one of those fake dj's the other day, he was carrying an empty record box and wearing a pair of headphones
