Guest Dante Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 Do you mean 2 for 120 or 120 each? 120 each, if not, it would be 1/4 of the price in books wouldn't it?
Pete S Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 (edited) 120 each, if not, it would be 1/4 of the price in books wouldn't it? Dante are you trying to tell me that Darrell Banks on Volt is worth double 120 which is 240, if so, I'm afraid you are delusional as is the person who priced it at 200 in the book Edited July 18, 2007 by Pete-S

Don't reduce it on my say-so Dante, you may well get that price for it and I hope you do but does anyone in the world think this record is worth £200?

Don't worry pete, is not for your say:D it's just i don't think it'll sell cracked at that price. Aparently Mr. Manship think so...

Trev Thomas Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 And mine. going on the amount of copies that go through ebay, more like £40
Guest meaty Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 The Artistics - This Heart Of Mine (Okeh) VG+ 65 Vynil looks bad, but plays strong no offense Dante, but if its VG+, it should look good.
Pete S Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 The Artistics - This Heart Of Mine (Okeh) VG+ 65 Vynil looks bad, but plays strong no offense Dante, but if its VG+, it should look good. I personally go by the play grade so if I had something that looks terrible I'd just say "looks terrible - plays great - so to be safe, grading at VG+". I think Dante covered all bases really.

I think Dante covered all bases really. I don't know if this is the philosophy with many UK sellers, but I've gotten a bunch of records off of this site from people graded at like EX that I would grade VG- or worse visually. It's misleading to at least not give the visual grade, you can say "plays EX" if you want, but that doesn't make it EX or VG+.

Pete S Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 So with this mentality, why not just grade the record M- if theres no difference?? Because it's evidently not mint minus is it? F*cks sake don't give me a hard time for sticking up for the guy. If I sell a mint minus record it will have been played once or twice if ever.

Guest Posted July 21, 2007 Posted July 21, 2007 Hi from a newbie( I've put an intro in the forum) While we're on the subject can anyone tell me if you have some kind of guide on the forum that would help us new members to understand the grading system most commonly used??I know there's different strokes for different folks, but it gets sooo confusing as to what buyers expect.I've been on various sites and they all seem to have a different idea of what Ex, Vg++, Vg+ etc is. I'd really appreciate any help and I'm sure there must be others.

DeltaSouth Posted July 22, 2007 Posted July 22, 2007 imho vg+ should still be very shiney and in extremely nice condition... at first glance it still looks new(ish) vg++ (or Ex) is a bit better than vg+ but not quite nice enough to be NM grade conservatively and build up karma points, is the moral to the story. fwiw... i do not own any mint items. none. zip. nada. kind of refreshing to hear someone say that, isn't it. (well, type it anyway)

(well, type it anyway) agree also i can say i dont own any mint 45s, mint - yes, its not just the vinyl also the labels which are important when grading, the ammount of records that you see out that people claim are "stone mint" "mint" only to have some sign of ring wear, unclean labels, stacking wear.
Sunnysoul Posted July 22, 2007 Posted July 22, 2007 I don't know if this is the philosophy with many UK sellers, but I've gotten a bunch of records off of this site from people graded at like EX that I would grade VG- or worse visually. It's misleading to at least not give the visual grade, you can say "plays EX" if you want, but that doesn't make it EX or VG+. Boba, I think you have just hit the nail on the head as to why many so UK soul sellers - including many on this site - are so often bemoaning the lack of sales in recent times. It's quite noticeable how many soul collectors from outside the UK have mentioned to me that they simply won't buy soul records from UK sources any longer, period. And the most often cited reason is the dreaded UK "EX(cellent)" grading, usually based on the Record Collector (UK) system . As you've just mentioned, in the minds of many UK sellers, the absolute lowest grading is a VG !!!! And that more often than not looks like it has been run over by a truck !!! One might ask whatever happened to the GOOD/FAIR/POOR gradings !!! That, coupled with the fact that so many UK soul sellers appear to be to be stuck in a mind-set regarding record values .... a mind-set that says that the value of a soul record will always be what it was at its highest ever point , without regard to current demand or popularity or quantity. These days, unless a record is a one off, or there appear to be only a handful in existence, one is far better off to be patient and wait for a copy to turn up on (US) ebay (even taking into account all of ebay's many faults and pitfalls) and bid on the open world market where the US Dollar is far weaker than the UK pound, but where the grading - generally speaking - tends to be far more conservative and fairer and there is far less occurrence of other nasty factors such as cue burn or worn out record grooves that you often come across with records that have spent 30 or 40 years doing the rounds of UK northern soul collectors and dealers.
Pete S Posted July 22, 2007 Posted July 22, 2007 Record Collectors grading system was and is way too strict and inflexible, which is why people created their own gradings (++ etc). Also the RC grading system is NOT used by 99% of Northern Soul dealers, especially, as you say, the VG grade. VG has come to mean anything less than VG+, so people are grading G records as VG. I did start a grade of my own which was "completely f*cking knackered" but it never caught on.

Guest Posted July 22, 2007 Posted July 22, 2007 Thanks guys..I think!! It's interesting to see that even in this number of replies though, there's some difference of opinion/expectation.I think it will be safest maybe to say,as you've suggested, that I have no mint records and grade conservatively.Hopefully a few people will be pleasantly surprised with their purchases and I won't be selling myself short too often!
Mark Bicknell Posted July 22, 2007 Posted July 22, 2007 Im still looking for the rare records That's cos you got them all....lol Time for me bed lol Regards - Mark Bicknell.
Ted Massey Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 That's cos you got them all....lol Time for me bed lol Regards - Mark Bicknell. wish i had mate
Ted Massey Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 VG grade which i take to mean Very Good is really misleading how can any thing be VG when it looks like its been skated on and has clicks. Even if a record is unplayed but has a scratch that clicks must make it Fair not even Good
Pete S Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 I can't see the point in or any need for ++ or +++, it's either vg or a bit better (one +) or excellent IMHO. Think people use multiple to make a record appear better than it really is. If it helps give a better grade of the record, that doesn't bother me - and I personally believe there is a difference between vg+ and vg++ but I;d have to show you rather than tell you
