well ..... we had our first night (in a club) since the ban and it didn't seem to affect attendance. july is our quietest month in ryde anyway each year. had about 400 or so in .... and we reckon a solid 30 or so standing outside most of the night smoking (not the same 30 of course).

however, lack of smoke in the venue made it look a bit .... er ... clear. might have to get a smoke machine!!

No problems at Annesley last night, if anyone felt the need to smoke they just had a trip outside. Good job it didn't rain though as there isn't any covered area as yet , but the welfare did have umbrellas on stand by

I dont think it will affect people attending do's too much (although other half says he wont bother in the winter but we will see!) Went to one on Friday night where we had to go down a fire escape to get to the marquee to have a fag which was ok while you were sober but after a few pints the trek down was a bit dangerous - actually tripped at one point and nearly went down face first ha! I think if there is a place you can go that is covered from the elements then no one can really moan although its nice if you can still hear the music being played so you dont lose the momentum of the night.

The only down side I can see is having to smell everyone's BO and farts all night - you couldnt do that in a smoky haze!

I didn't go to the last Connaught purely because of the smoking ban. It was the only time I was able to go out and have a drink and a smoke, every other night I'm at home being Dad. So whereas it hasn't affected many people, it did affect one.

wasnt so bad last night but it was nice and warm, might be different when its freezing cold and raining hard.

it has made a difference to my local. my mate Chris (landlord) said takings are slightly down but its too early to be so sure of the effect.

As a smoker, I think its a good thing too. I would never let it rule my social life so it wont be an issue.. I think attendances are starting to come back already around our area.

One benefit I didn't expect were all the funny conversations that take place outside amongst the smokers.. I've met a few nice people who I probably wouldn't have spoken to otherwise.. thumbsup.gif

Been to more nighters at the 100 Club than anywhere else over the years. 100 Club has air conditioning so was never really a problem. But the smoke/perfumed air as was with the air con was far preferable to the fetty whiff that filled the air the other week, imo.

Pete , it is only a 10 yard walk to get outside and it is undercover where they all gathered for a smoke with a cigarette bin on the wall. You can still hear the music clearly. The only difficulty from your point I suppose is when you are selling records and you have to pop out and not be looking after them yourself.

 Totally agree with you there Jayne, even though we had a couple of smokers inside our soul venue, who were politely ask to stub it out or smoke outside, with no repercussion, exept for 1, who did stub it out but then lite up again afterwards after we moved away.

Now what I would like to ask is..... if the management had asked and this person carried on smoking, would or could they say, ''right as your soul club is not abiding by the goverment rules of the smoking in public placed rule , then we no longer want to your club to carry on at this fuction''

Which would be such a shame as we are now approaching our 3rd Anniversay, for the sake of maybe a couple of soul rebels.

What I mean Craig, I never get the chance to go out so it was just the one occasion I could go out, relax with a pint and a fag. And now I can't do that, so it means I just won't go out again. It certainly means I could never dj again, you must have noticed, I chain smoke when djing!

(n.b. I don't smoke at any other time of the day except after 8pm!)

Fair point Pete. Shame really.

I never used to have a fag until around 9 at night and that was with a couple of cans of beer then I would smoke 20 up until around 11.30 and feel shit the next day.

So I gave up around 5 years ago and have felt great since. Never even think about one now.

yes it would be a shame if you have a couple of smokers in the venue i feel its up to the promoters to clamp down straight away and if they continue to smoke and you in with a chance that you will lose the night then if they continued to flaunt the rules (now the law ) then i would ban them from the venue hard i know but why should all the others that regualy attend your venue suffer

You should obtain some worry beads Pete.

I,ve just been talking to someone who went to Middleton last night and while the ban did not affect the attendance they did feel that the atmosphere/ambiance or whatever did due to the swarms of addicts outside getting their fix. whistling.gif

Hiya Shute,

I agree with night nurse - ban 'em if they refuse to abide by your rules. We had a few light up in the venue last month but I didn't catch them. (we've been non smoking since Jan) and we even had a group of women climb out of the window in the upstairs ladies toilet and stand on the roof because presumably they couldn't be bothered going downstairs and outside!!.

If there's illegal activity going on in the venue whilst you've got it hired I'm sure they can refuse to let you hire the place again.. I've known venue's threaten to cancel events because of persistant use of Talc so i'm sure they can do this.

we were at Middleton last night ,got to admit that Carl n Maria's room defiantly benefited from no smoking .much better within the small room,

Just one point though the amount of dog ends outside the place when we left at 7 was amazing .makes you wonder who s responsible for cleaning it the venue or the council, it was a mess ,bet the government did nt think of that. biggrin.gif

As an ex smoker of some 16 years.....makes me wonder if it can be suitably enforced.....doesnt really bother me if people smoke or not .....at the end of the day..it has got to be the choice of the indidvidual...BTW....believe that Stoke is the only district in the country not to enforce the non smoking rule....Delx

Don't want people to think I'm against the smoking ban - I would definitely have banned it in restaurants, cafes, cinemas etc but not pubs or clubs that's all. Especially not pubs.

Posted

Here are the new government regulations...

Search everyone at the door, confiscate all cigarettes, refuse entry to all smokers and ban them from everywhere for life - or even longer!

Meanwhile, everyone else is welcome ...including drunks, smackheads, gangsters, perverts, terrorists, psycopaths and estate agents.

Good nite at annesley last nite, just think though them 30 odd smokers outside at 1 time would have polluted the hole club inside.Obviously im a "non smoker" at it was pleasant to get home not stinking of nicotine. The shock for the smokers for sure will come on a cold damp rainy nite  have fun you smokers.

Totally agree with you Pete, why cant the pub or club have the choice and all its staff have the choice to work there or not.

Think everybody knows my views on this so not gonna start ranting yet again.

Had to laugh on Friday though.

Was at Soul Intent & nobody could get a drink.

Why, because both the barmaids were outside having a fag with me laugh.gif

Gave all the non smokers summat else to winge about though.

The one thing the smoking ban has brought is instead of smelling smoke all night you now have the highly stinky whiff rising up from the carpet assualting your nostrils. I think someone must have left something very nasty in the carpet at Cleethorpes on Friday night & I'm not talking the occassional spilt bottle of Stella either swoon.gif

Nice one there.Put a smile on me face and made me titter at this unearthly time of the morning.Sorry Ian,d'ya mind if I also reply to someone else's comment "have fun outside smokers" while am at it.To be perfectly honest smoking outside doesn"t bother me AT ALL.Wottevva the wevva. Will just dress accordingly. The biggest plus about this is another comment made about getting to talk to the people who you would normally not get the chance

to talk to inside.Noticed this at WILTON.It was great to socialise and have a bit of banter with

so many other folk who you dont often get that chance with.IN FACT this smoker did "have fun outside"(and inside as well).people seemed to be more relaxed and feel like they could shrug off that "must be serious and not be silly and daft "persona and just be themselves without fear of upsetting or embarassing others for just a few moments thru the night.IMO thats gotta be one of the plus points to come from this ban for us 'bad, bad people" to enjoy and not be an ordeal.Right!off for a ciggie now --outside in me garden.(while I still can)

I was at middleton and while there were concerns about the effect on atmosphere it was nice to get home only smelling of sweat for once, the lack of fag smoke really makes a difference to the drive home

and i wasn't ordered to strip in the hallway the moment i got in the door...

 Never thought I'd see a ban in my life time - I'm well pleased. No clothes stinking of fags, no fag burns on clothes/skin from smokers on the dance floor, no bad chest the next day after a soul night, no longer subjected to cancer-causing chemicals selfishly puffed about by others. Never mind the so-called 'rights' of smokers at long last I can enjoy my rights to smoke free air!!!

If smokers feel that they have to give up on their soul nights just because they'll have to pop outside everytime they need a fag then that'll be a sad state of affairs -especially if it's folk who constantly bang on about how dedicated to the music and scene they are!

at the wilton the smoke has up to now only masked the truly awfull pong that permeates everything and everybody in there!! might start burning my clothes after a niter there..... if it bucks up and plays some up tempo stuff and i bother to go again!!!!!!!!!!! as i said in my middleton thing put some speakers outside and have 4 rooms!!!!!!!!!!

Have to agree totally, the morning after the Newquay soul night i was amazed at how i felt, what a difference, apart from the obvious improvement in the smell of my hair and clothes, i actually felt fine  I always attributed the 'hung over' feeling to having a drink, but clearly its not just been the drink. mellow.gif Im asking myself now, what damage has been done to my health , I guess thats a 'wait and see' :(

I generally smoke when i'm out but i welcome the ban, i'm not a heavy smoker maybe one or two a day but when i'm drinking i generally smoke a LOT more. I find that if i'm sat in a pub and i have a packet of cigs in front of me i just smoke one after another, but at Cleethorpes at the weekend i maybe smoked 5 cigs all night and certainly had more energy as a result, plus i didn't stink of smoke the next day - cant be a bad thing, plus think of the money saved! thumbsup.gif

I decided that I want to live to see my little boy grow up and also want to attend another soul night so I packed up on sunday. Don't miss it, won't have any cravings, which is bizarre as I've been doing it for 27 years, but it'll be interesting to see what happens when I have that first sip of beer cos thats when I usually open the packet! Have to get some celery or something to nibble on.

I am a weekend smoker with a beer and glad to see the smoking ban,it made me go outside for a few but i smoked far less than before...Good point about talking to folk outside, nice to talk to some new folk at Middleton outside without shouting over the music....

Now e have another problem though, the smell od shite  from the gents at Middleton was the worst smell ever and no smoke to hide that, also the smell of people/farts in the main hall etc, gonna have to pump in some air freshner now..And before you say it Mr T,the smell from the gents was not me :P ..

First time ever at home in the morning without my clothes smelling of smoke, what a plus..Really pitty my piss bag had leaked though, can't win em all..

 All the very best with it Pete. My wife gave up last year after 25 plus years using the patches and free support sessions from the chemist - never thought she'd do it, but a really determined lady and it's been about 14 months now without a single fag! Think of all the music you'll be able to buy with the savings!

I went 1 whole night out without a fag whilst on the orange juice and lemonade but the following week i had a beer and had to run straight to the fag machine or i would of killed someone trying to be nice to me if i hadnt, beers the hardest thing for me and my non smoking attempts,

so i just smoke when im out at the weekend having a beer even if i have to go outside, its either that or no beer or stay in

Good luck Pete

you have to remember that some soul venues are at clubs ie social, miners welfares etc.if these places suffer in general then they may close.a northern do once a month may not be enough to keep them open.its great at the moment, its summer.the winter will be the telling point.seen a program about the ban in ireland and it said about 10-15% of places have had to close due to the ban.an estimate on closers here was between 6-10,000.at the end of the day,its good for non smokers and bad for smokers.theres nowt you can do about it

As a non-smoker, I'm delighted smoking has been banned from venues. Last July Stoke was packed,

right up until 06.00am, guess he ban may very well have a greater positive effect than any perceived downside. Nice to come back without my clothes smelling like an old ashtray.

Just gotta train these younger soul fans not to take drinks onto the dance floor now.......................
