Steve G Posted July 25, 2007 Posted July 25, 2007 Just re-read the first few posts, one says John found 25 but only took as many as he could get on his finger and another says 250 so which is it Urban myth? could be chinese wispers.........how often does the discovery of one record turn into one 30 count box then a 150 count box Chalky, John told me the engineer had 250. John had to go back to Philly on the bus and already had a sack full of records, so he took a few with the intention of going back and getting the rest. When he did the engineer had moved / gone. This wouldn't have been unusual in the mid 70s at all, this sort of thing was going on all the time. I still say they're buried in a waste site and probably decomposed by now. Oh and I am in the risk business as well in a way Ernie, but I'd say this is a good risk to take.
Guest mel brat Posted August 4, 2007 Posted August 4, 2007 (edited) MMmm all very interesting BUT most people seemed to have commented on the rarity, price not the actual track itself which is honestly ordinary IMO. Not a patch on Chuck Cissel - Dont Tell Me You're Sorry, Vernon Burch - For you for example £5 - £20 sounds My comment is that Billy Woods is one of the greatest, most evocative and fondly remembered 70s recordings ever played on the Northern scene, and knocks Chuck Cissel et.al. into a cocked hat - So there! (Plus it was a Blackpool Mecca anthem, naturally!) Edited August 4, 2007 by mel brat

(Plus it was a Blackpool Mecca anthem, naturally!) Hi Mel. Maybe, but IMO it's sounds good but not special comparing it to lots of other contemporary stuff. Lots of great stuff was played at the Mecca but plenty of dogs too. Still, everyone has their difference in tastes and perhaps that's all that this is down to.
Guest Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 Pep and Ian Levine also had copies. I reckon if we add up all the copies mentioned in this thread there must be 20 definites and about the same again being speculated on. If the one that turned up on ebay last week was a freak find (the guy had it for years and didn't know he'd got it) there have got to be more copies like that waiting to turn up, but you could wait 30 years for that to happen. Peter, With due respect you were not around at the time, when 8 became available. We all knew each other and met regular at different events. Levine, Pep, myself, Ginger, Poke, Chris Dalton, Richard Searling, Soul Sam?? maybe Rick Scott, .. can't think of anyone else off hand ..it's NOT stretching to 20 and remembering these 8 constantly changed hands. So quite a number of collectors can rightly claim owning a copy. 20 copies at the time, it would have been considered reasonably "common", it was heralded in the 70s as one of THE records to own. 8 was the figure mentioned at the time, whilst it was NEW & BEING PLAYED and can remember many, many discussions on it, because at the time everyone said, including myself, "it's on Sussex it'll turn up" It has 3 times in in 32 years. How many copies have you or Ernie or anyone else who questioning it's value, rarity and the wisdom of purchasing acopy, actually found? Sold? or even touched. Mid-seventies was "Golden Era" and this was one of the "golden" records from it. But I can see why some people, can't understand what all the fuss is about. But those who were there and part of it, understand perfectly.
Sunnysoul Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 Until about 4 months ago there were 2 issues in Australia - one bought by Paul Cridge from John's auction about 3 years ago and another lurking in the back of Steve Trindall's collection which he bought at Cleethorpes in the 70s for 40 quid. Both play well. When I told Steve what his copy was worth he dismissed the idea of selling it out of hand. 4 weeks later he was in possession of over 7 grand. Cheers Pete Yes , that's right Pete and you should also mention the one known copy of the AUSTRALIAN release of Billy Woods on A & M , a demo with the famous Aussie red bullett sticker , got released by Festival when it did a rights deal with A&M/Sussex in the USA and Festival proceeded to release ALL the early numbers in consecutive order ....

John you see a problem in every word I ever post on your topics, I do not question it's rarity or value, I simply said that pep and Levine had the record, and not only did Pep make me an emi off his copy but I was sat with him at Wigan when he sold it.
