Reg Posted July 11, 2007 Posted July 11, 2007 (edited) I love Lps...always have done. There's something magical about them that I think goes back to my childhood when I got my first one for my 8th birthday (don't ask which one though....oh go on then it was the Grease soundtrack). I thought about this as I'm waiting for the postman to bring me one this morning and Mr Bergman and I have rather a lot between us (mainly his I might add). They are also a great choice for the vinyl fan with more limited resources as they usually come much cheaper than 45s and you also get so much more for your money. EG the Don gardner 45 We're gonna make it big costs 100s but I got it on the Lp lay a little Lovin on me which he did with Baby Washington and it has some decent tracks on it and for only a tenner off the lovely Les Hare. I know that some tracks are LP only and also with some you buy the album and the rest of the tracks are duds (eg Fifth Avenue Band....) but on the whole I think that you're usually on a winner. Mr Bearsoul gave me a lovely LP track compilation for chrimbo which demonstrated this very successfully! So the whole point of this thread....what are your favourite LPs, standout tracks etc? Or are you a strictly 45 only kinda chap? Edited July 12, 2007 by Reg

Or are you a strictly 45 only kinda chap? I totally agree with you on this one, i've never been a big on albums in trems of collecting but in recent years i although don't go out of my way to locate certain albums i have desided to try and pull together all the real classic albums connected with the rare soul scene, Metro's - RCA, Artistics - Brunswick/Okeh, Freddy Butler/Hesitations - Kapp, Gloria Barnes - Maple, Garland Green - Uni, Reflections - Golden World, Darrell Banks - Atco, Baby Washington - Veep, Williams And Watson - Okeh, Esquires - Bunky, Garnett Mimms - UA, The Tempests - Smash and numerous others, as you pointed out there are some LP only tracks 'Someday' - Tempests, Metro's - 'I'll Never Forget You' and the hidden gem of that wonderful album 'I'm With You All The Way', The Hestitations - 'Soul Superman' has to be very possibly the best ever album track for track it's blinding, perhaps not classic albums in commercial terms but top of the tree on our scene. Regards - Mark Bicknell.
John Reed Posted July 11, 2007 Posted July 11, 2007 On the 70's side the two LP's that I cant stop playing start to finish since I put them on my Ipod are Paul Kelly - Dont Burn Me and Hooked Hogtied and Collared IMO you cant get better than these. Up there near the top is the Modulations - It's Rough Out Here I cant put individual standout tracks as you can put the needle anywhere.
Guest Adrian Posted July 11, 2007 Posted July 11, 2007 Up there near the top is the Modulations - It's Rough Out Here Yep fantastic lp, every track is worthwhile, magic. Also my fave 70's (collected lps before 45's) Westwing ST 20th Century Gene Redding Blood Brother Haven (Title track is abit chessy but its a guilty pleasure) Class-Set My Style Mod-Art Johnny Bristol Strangers (any 70's lps from him are worthwhile) Street People Vigor And of course the standard Mayfield, Hutson & Gaye lps

Keamus Posted July 11, 2007 Posted July 11, 2007 Some great LPs out there and usually at a fraction of the cost of 45s. Currently love listening to Jimmy James's "The New Religion" LP and in particular his take on "The Entertainer" and the truly awesome "Ain't no big thing" .
Guest Matt Male Posted July 11, 2007 Posted July 11, 2007 FIVE STAIRSTEPS&CUBIE-LOVES HAPPENING WHY SO MANY DJ'S EXCLUDE LP'S IS BEYOND ME?? Agreed. I'll be playing 'I'm The One Who Loves You' off the Five Stairstep's LP at the Coop on August 4th. Brilliant track.
Daryl Posted July 11, 2007 Posted July 11, 2007 Got to agree many great albums where you can have expensive singles on them with hopefully the bonas off another good track.I collect both singles & lps & take both when out (could easily do an album only night)There are many great album tracks to be discovered/played out so you dont have to search for the exclusive single unless you are an A list dj Cheers Daryl www.hullsoulclub.com

Or are you a strictly 45 only kinda chap? I love LP's almost as much as 45's, I have many favourites that include:- Donny Hathaway - Extensions of a Man - Atco, awesome album that includes the quite incredibly brilliant "I love the Lord he heard me cry / Someday we'll all be free". Sam dees - The show must go on - Atlantic including the brilliant "Child of the streets" & "What's it gonna be". D.J.Rogers - On the road again - RCA - the title track is out of this world. American Gypsy - American Gypsy - BTM - love the whole album. Maxine Brown - Outa sight - Epic - featuring the brilliant "Don't leave me baby" & "Seems you've forsaken my love" amongst others. Last but certainly not least the greatest album of all time bar none "What's going on" by Marvin Gaye. Regards Alan
Codfromderby Posted July 11, 2007 Posted July 11, 2007 Some great LPs out there and usually at a fraction of the cost of 45s. Currently love listening to Jimmy James's "The New Religion" LP and in particular his take on "The Entertainer" and the truly awesome "Ain't no big thing" . you beat me to his one, my copy on piccadilly of "the new religion" is so knackered i had to buy a US copy called "come to me softly" on atco, listen to little boy blue, awesome, but you dont get the cool cover on the us copy more reccomendations city of angels-the miracles, contains brilliant stuff both dancers and ballads sweetest piece etc-bobby thurston, original worth loads, expansion copy for a fraction, one side of the lp is so good that i never played the other side, buy one help yourself - tom jones, containing a brill version of i cant break the news, available at a charity shop near you ,buy one, grace kennedy- starting again, contains a great version of love is serious business, can get the lp for nowt
Souljazera Posted July 11, 2007 Posted July 11, 2007 WHY SO MANY DJ'S EXCLUDE LP'S IS BEYOND ME?? i guess its to do with sound quality a 45 sounds very loud in comparison to an album track..that would be the only good reason for not playing an album only track....some top albums being mentioned on this thread....my favourite ALICE CLARK on mainstream
Tolbert Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 WHY SO MANY DJ'S EXCLUDE LP'S IS BEYOND ME?? You're not alone! Mostly i have some Lp's in my set, too much good songs on Lp (e.g. Tony Fox: love, let love and be loved). But it's not only the Music, it is also the coverartwork and the information about the artists that make Lp's irreplaceable for me. My current favorite Lp: Natural Four: Heaven right here on earth. Fantastic production from Leroy Hutson on Curtom

Djmelismo Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 I´ve always been a collector of LPs. More so than 45s actually. Why? Well, quite simply because on the LP there is much more to choose from. More tracks. And I love to find that obscure deep soul ballad hidden as the last track on side A or B. I also love the cover art, which you don´t get with many 45s. More to read and look at. More details about the recording given on the LP sleeve. Whenever I find a great 45, my follow-up question will always be: "Is there an LP? I want to hear more!" If there is no LP, then my follow-up question will be: "Are there more 45s by the same artist?" So, I normally buy the 45 only if the tune I want is NOT on an LP. On the other hand I collect mainly 70´s and very early 80´s and am aware that many (most?!) people here collect 60s or early 70s stuff, i.e. from a time before the LP became an established format. Spanner Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 Any body else have Cilla Black lp SHEER-OO ? FOR THE TRACK yo yo nice stomper even tho its Cilla
John Reed Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 I too love the cover art, curtom albums especially... A lot of Curtom LP's upto about 75 I thought had social themes, with lots of shots in alleyways (especially on Impressions LP's): The Young Mods forgotten Story, Finally Got Myself Together, Times have changed. I think for me, the LP "Preacher Man" is the most powerful, with the head and sholders of a clergyman, with tears coming down his face (he's in a brick alleyway of course). It seems to sum up the "black awareness" including Mayfields own views that had been coming through since the late 60's. I've always been a geek when it comes to gate folds and extras such as lyric sheets
NEV Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 It's Up To You a fave of mine and one I still play out now and again but I'd buy the lp even if that wasn't on it, some great mid tempo soul on there Garland Green - Jealous Kinda Fella well worth buying, every track a good 'un! Guest Bogue Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 Try this one! Contains a load of superb stuff and 2 Northern stormers 'Why Did You Take Your Love From Me' & 'Time After Time'....both superb out and out Northern Soul!!!! Two other ones worth getting are 'Think' & 'Excitement' early R&B type stuff but some great tunes on them, including, on 'Excitement', the fantastic 'Tell Me What You're Gonna Do'. Have been buying albums more & more of late, as people have said, cheaper way to aquire some favourites & also there are some fantastic album only tracks. Only have to look as far as Motown for some of these too ! 'Temptations - With A Lot Of Soul', loads of favourite northern tracks inc their fantastic version of 'Save My Love For A Rainy Day' 'Isley Bros - This Old Heart Of Mine', loads of favourites + the album only 'Seek & You Shall Find' 'Chuck Jackson - Arrives', just pure quality from start to finish. 'David Ruffin - In My Stride' , why pay about £40 for 'Rode By The Place' when you can get it here for no more than a tenner, along with the classic 'I Can't Stop The Rain' & several other beauts. 'Edwin Starr - 25 miles', again full of classics + the fantastic album only '24 Hours To Find My Baby' 'Martha & the Vandelas - Whatchout', contains classics like 'One Way Out' + (to me) their finest tune, the album only 'I'll Follow You' Smokey Robinson & the Miracles - 'Make It Happen', 'Away We A Go Go' or 'Going To A Go Go' All with great album only tracks. List could go on & on Other favourites of mine ; O'Jays - Soul sounds, all their great 60's dancers inc 'Ill Never Forget You' Freddy Butler - With A Dab Of Soul, Little Richard - The Explosive Little Richard, all the brill Okeh stuff. Dee Dee Warwick - I Want To Be With You/I'm Gonna Make You Love Me & Foolish Fool, both cramed with Northern tunes ! Inez & Charlie Foxx - Come By Here, all the favourites like 'Tightrope' & the album only (i think) 'Never Love A Robin' Arthur Conley - Sweet Soul Music, 60's soul standards & 2 or 3 good northern tracks. BJ Thomas - Everybody's Out Of Town, great album only version of Jr Walkers 'What Does It Take' Motherlode - When I Die, same as above, was a cheap way to get the single when it was at it's height, but it has come down in price. Ace Spectrum - Inner Spectrum, again used to be a cheaper way to get 'Dont Send Nobody Else' but is full of other great tracks too. Curtis Mayfield - Curtis , You just have to have the full length version of 'Move On Up' Awesome !!! Dusty Springfield, chose anyone of three for great northern stuff Jackie Wilson, same as above Chuck Jackson, " Magnificent Men, first album, crammed with Northern tracks Mitch Ryder - Breakout, his northern hits + some good reworkings of some old 60's standards. Jimmy Hughes - Why Not Tonight, worth buying just for his version of 'Slipping Around' Bobby Goldsboro - Blue Autumn - all his northern favourites One that I think tends to get overlooked is Freda Payne's self titled Lp on MGM, a couple of good northern tracks & beat ballads on there, along with a great reworking of the Rightous Brothers 'You've Lost That Lovin Feeling' Could go on & on, Carla Thomas - Memphis Queen, Clara Ward - Hang Your Tears Out To Dry, e.t.c One other that needs mentioning, Walter Jackson - Speak Her Name, truely awesome album !!
Guest 45s and 33s Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 It's Up To You a fave of mine and one I still play out now and again but I'd buy the lp even if that wasn't on it, some great mid tempo soul on there You're right, there's hardly a bad track on the whole album. Ali

The real truth behind a lot of you Northerners only taking 45's to gigs is because your little arms get so tired carrying even just a handful of LP's from the car park to the decks, unlike us Southern hardmen who carry one box of twelves in one hand, and a box of LP's in the other. Gene-r Posted July 26, 2007 Posted July 26, 2007 Away from a real soul angle, my all-time fave LP (which brings back childhood memories when my sister bought it) is "Alton Ellis Sings Rock & Soul" on UK Coxsone. Soulwise, I would have to say "Would You Believe" by The Tempests. All but one track are absolute corkers.
