I've got a question....... it's about travelling.

There has been a lot of talk about people travelling, or more often not travelling, to nights and events on this site. In general people are right. It is hard to get people to travel more than a few miles from their front door these days and I wondered what the reason for this was.

I know I will get replies from people who travel 500 miles for a do but in the main I think people just don't anymore. Once upon a time it was the norm.

For me I love the journey there, listening to tunes on the car stereo, all the chat and anticipation of the night to come and then the journey back home stopping off in a motorway service station for a bit of breakie or finding a caf to kill time before the first train home.

I don't think you have to travel miles to earn some kind of "soul stripes" and of course this in no way is an indication of a persons love or passion for the music, just interested in why people don't seem to want to do it these days. I have a seven seater and regularly offer people in my area free rides to nites up and down the country but inevitably it's the same people who take me up on my offer every time.

I'm one of the "used to love" travellers, that now hates it

When I was living in Essex (Westcliff and then Benfleet), we (me and my sister) travelled up north most weekends - Bretby, Winsford, The Ritz, Wilton etc. The only local do we went to was the 100 club (and when it was still on Leighton Buzzard) and if we were really bored/skint/nothing nighter-wise was on - Saks (when Shifty ran it)

Now I HATE travelling. I do have responsibilities now though (2 children under 5) and don't have the luxery of leaving home late afternoon, and arriving home 24 hours or more later. Now I have to pick the kids up mid-morning and then be capable of looking after them until they go to bed.... In the good old days it was me that needed looking after until I was safely tucked up in bed

I'm really lucky in that I have tonnes and tonnes of dos within an hour of home - so don't need to travel, BUT in reality can only get out about once a fortnight

Maybe once the kids have grown up......

Actually what I'm really looking for is a new neighbour that really loves kids, and would love to babysit for entire weekends, and who has a partner that loves Soul and wants to drive somewhere every weekend with me as there accomplice

A woman after my own heart.... ....i can really relate to your post babes...when you have family responsiblities..it can be hard to just get up and go...you have to consider your child/children as well.....wasnt so much of a problem before,,because my partner Rob was happy to babysit our son..whilst i went out from time to time...however by introducing him to Northern..he has taken a more than keen interest and wants to come out with me when i do get out!!!!....the only reason i started to take him out with me...was to show that...the music is first and foremost...and if one travels...it is not for illicit purposes ...just good times and good music....good company....but unfortunately for me...he enjoyed himself soo much...he expects to come along as well ...never mind...much much better than the last hubbie.....who tried to turn me into a Stepford Wife.....Del Said No!!!!!!!!!.....Delxxxx

I am in the same boat with some of my friends, if its over an hour away they dont want to travel even when i always do the driving, i know im a bit eratic behind the wheel because i have poor concetation levels and always have a few near misses but they still do the shorter journeys ,

There are so many events on every week it normally means you dont have to travel so far but if there was only a few on each week then you would have to travel more to get your fix of a soul night in,

Im not out this week but the folowing week there are 3 places i want to go too, you cant do them all, there simply is far too many events on for people needing to travel. the bigger better events will always get the travellers but the lesser soul nights not so much.

living in skegness, we have to travel nearly every weekend . unless you want to hear the same old,same old. being right out on the coast it takes two hours just to hit the county border line, then 1 or 2 hours on top to make it to where ever we is heading.

got to be done though cos nothing local that hits the spot.

I dont mind travelling,I can get most nighters in under one or two hours,Bretby was 5 or 10,minutes away .

We take it in turns to drive,and who ever drives gets their entry into the nighter paid for them.

People will still travel in large no,s if its worth the trip.

I could be at a soul nite every weekend locally, but there is nothing that floats my boat. So instead I hit the road every weekend. Unusual if I have to travel over 2 hours though, I can hit manc in an hour, and stoke in hour and a half.

Andy is right though, if a night is good enough, people will travel.

people are getting older and have responsibilities so i spose it's mainly down to that?

i well remember getting the national express bus up to morecambe from brum for a friday nighter and then getting down to the 100 club the next day for the saturday but there is no way i could do that now, even if i wanted to

Don't be downhearted if you have little kids. They get bigger if you don't watch 'em too closely and before you know it they are mid teens and you get your life back (and your inclination to go further than your local soul night).

I did all that travelling business in the 70s/ 80s and early 90s...but living in mansfield i dont have to travel to far now because ive got all the best venues on my door step....Attic club- black bull inn....Kingsway- forest town....Annesley welfare...Bentick miners welfare- Pilsley soul club all in Notts/derbyshire etc.

Well the 80s and half the 90s passed me by, with looking after my lad,but I got back into the scene,So young Mums and Dads dont give up
