That is true. I was looking at the the Gloria Barnes album about 4 weeks ago and in the sleeve notes she's referred to as Gloria Towanda Barnes.

I've mentioned this one before - Jo Armstead and Deena Johnson are one and the same. Mildred Vaney of the Glories is also Millie Scott, who made that great 80s Detroit dancer "Prisoner Of Love". It's generally accepted that Dottie Cambridge is Dorothy Moore, and although I've no conclusive proof of that it does seem likely. And I've strained my brain too much already for one day so I'm off to bed before I sit here for a couple of hours trying to think of some more...

While on this subject, can anyone confirm whether there was ever an official LP issued on Denise Chandler AKA Deniece Williams in the 60's, presumably on Toddlin Town, or even later in the 70's when she became famous, was there ever a vinyl LP of her 6T's output possibly to cash in on her fame?

Not as far fetched as it sounds for a small Chicago indie like Toddlin Town, as I have a various artists LP compilation issued by the company in '68 featuring their biggest act Alvin Cash ...

I have a vague recollection of someone like girl group expert Gilles Petard writing something on this subject. Wasn't it he who wrote a book or catalogue on LP releases of 6T's girl groups/soul girls ?

I've just been upstairs and played 'My Sugar Baby' - the singer doesn't sound anything like Chris Clark. Unless Chris herself has personally confirmed it, I think that this linking might be conjecture rather than fact.

However, while we're on Motown related matters, Syreeta and Rita Wright is a good one that nobody's come up with yet. And, of course, Valerie Simpson recorded as Tammi Terrell on many tracks that Tammi herself was too ill to finish up - "The Onion Song" being perhaps the most famous example.

Agreed Tony, I've never believed this story, at the time she was a secretary in Detroit while Frank Wilson was still out on the West Coast, so you'd think that if she ever recorded for a small label it would have been Detroit based!

That's a rumor, started by the late Dave Godin, that nobody has ever confirmed.

However, while I'm here, here's another one I just thought of:

Sandy Wynns = Edna Wright, lead singer of - and in most cases, the only voice on recordings by - the Honey Cone. Edna is the sister of Darlene Love, of course, who recorded both solo as the lead singer with - among others! - The Crystals, the Blossoms, the Glass House (on "Touch Me Jesus"), Bob B. Soxx and the Blue Jeans (Bobby Sheen being the male lead), the Rebelettes, the Allisons, the Bootles and an almost untold amount of other groups!

Brenda Holloway did, however, also record as 'Bonnie' of 'Bonnie & Clyde' in In-Sound. 'Clyde' was Robert Jones, brother of the Gloria Jones of "Come Go With Me"/"Heartbeat"/Marc Bolan fame rather than the other Gloria Jones, who was in the Dreamers and also the Blossoms and who - I think, but I'm not sure - recorded solo as Vik. E. Lee, The Victorians and Gloria Melbourne.

After reasearching it a bit further, I've come to the conclusion that the Florian/Felice Taylor link is probably b*ll*cks as well. Felice would have been recording for Mustang and Kent as excatly the same time as Florian's one and only Groovy/Cadet 45 came out. Given that Felice was based in L.A. and that Groovy & Cadet are both Chicago labels, I think it's a highly unlikely connection.

Also, I can find no vinyl evidence that Bessie Banks ever recorded as anyone other than Bessie Banks. Or that Beverly Ann recorded as Beverly Bevers. I think that the key fact here has to be that singers actually made records by two or more names.

Speaking of which, Sylvia St. Claire on Brunswick is Sylvia Shemwell of the Sweet Inspirations, who also recorded as Sylvia Shemwell on Phillips. Sticking With Brunswick for a sec, Inez Johnston on that label is Inez Foxx. (and although he's not relevant to this thread, Chuck Johnston on Brunswick is Charlie Foxx, just to keep it in the family). Also Brunswick related, Big Maybelle made and released her first records - in the mid 1940s! - as Mabel Smith.

To be precise, LaVern Baker actually recorded as Little Miss Sharecropper, not merely 'Miss Sharecropper', in 1951 - around the same time as Mickie Champion was recording as part of a studio group called "The Nic Nacs" for RPM Records.

I'm sure I'll come up with a few more given time...

this was on here in the past month or so, emma rede was also jackie lee, not the mirwood man the rupert woman

I remember something similar. I think lorraine did record under a different name, not sure what tho'! any definate confirmation anyone?
