Pet Hates On The Scene?

You are more than welcome for the assumption that you are still in your prime. The point is ALL of what you say may be true, and if so the best way to deal with it is to confront the blighters who make you so angry, even on a Monday morning.

Its not likely those who wind you up would care about being reprimanded on a forum like this, but if you get the chance to discuss the issues one on one, Im sure most will see your point of view more clearly.

Do you really think i am gonna confront the gangsters who knock out Donkey Porn,i value my life too much for that... :D ..I take you point Ed and think this topic is going no place, close it if you wish or merge it with the topic i was meant to reply to..I have taken away the bit about bad bald people because i know many who aint seen hair since Jesus was a lad but are very nice people indeed...I stand by all the rest apart from Pimps and Hookers, not seen or heard of any of themif i am honest...

Steve, had you and Lydia had an heavy day on the white wine before you posted this!

Although I feel pretty fed up myself at the moment with this continual rain rain rain! As the week goes on I'm sure you'll perk up-maybe we'll bring the babies round to cheer you up!! :D:D At the very least it will make you feel better that you aren't me!!!

And don't forget in a few weeks we'll be sitting in a bar in the south of France sipping that white wine!!!!

See you soon

Northern soul vinyl snobbery ..if its northern you should be able to play it no matter how "played out " it is remember someone out there still loves it!!!! :D

Mandy happy smiling dancing soulie! :(

As a relative newcomer to the soul scene i dont really have any pet hates but i do agree with above comment, 'somebody out there still loves it'. I think ones tastes continually evolve, i mean isn't it the 'overplayed classics' that first hook you in to soul music and then as you go to more events and hear different things you begin to like them too? this dosent mean that the first stuff you hear becomes c***p! reading this topic i have learned a few things though......dont stand in dark corners or people will assume you are a gangster, you must smile ALL night and/or dance all night....even if you cant dance(like me :( )

I have dipped my toe into this djing lark but after reading some of these comments i think I'll be giving it up! I tend to put a few choons on that i think everyone will know, and few choons that maybe you wont or wont have heard in a while, usually i clear the dancefloor a few times but i dont worry, just cos no ones dancing dont mean they aint enjoying it. Well thats what i think anyway. But hey what would i know... Im a newbie :D and a pretend DJ :D

No, you're comin' along :(

The only thing is you should never play pressings/sevens/stardust out

There's plenty of decent tunes that won't break the bank, looking out on here for reccomendations is a good place to start. :D

Now that I've stirred that one up again.

I speak as a bog standard soul lover and by that i mean i'm am not a DJ or a promoter or serious collector but just a girl who loves the music and loves to dance. I travel around the country sometimes revisiting fav places and other times trying out new ones.

INVHO for what it's worth I dance to the feel and beat not the rareity or the familiarity of the tune. I like to hear 30% well played classics 40% familiar tunes and 30% never heard before, well not in my memory anyway which is flaggin these days. I love to hear new tunes, thats what keeps the scene interesting.

Anyway lost the thread....

My pet hates are the same as others namely drinks on the dancefloor and people standing chatting on the dance floor...no surprise there...but also people who think a record is fantastic just coz it's rare. Sometimes it's rare for a very good reason...It's c**p! Also people who take the piss if you like something commercial and overplayed.

Mind you I'm guilty of that as i hate 'Do I love you', sit down on principle when it's played and berrate anyone who even taps their foot to it so maybe i sould remove the mote from mine own eye!!!! LOL

XX

We're obviously Soul sisters because I feel exactly the same way. If I like the beat of a record then I'll dance to it. The cost of that round piece of vinyl doesn't interest me 1 little bit(unless my husband has just bought new records of course :D ).

It takes all sorts and it would be a bit boring if we all liked exactly the same set of tunes.

Deb what you must realise aswell about some if not most comments on here is take no notice at all as they are only opinions and not fact (except mine of course :D ), we are all different with different takes about the scene and most are just miserable gits that just love a moan anyway :D:( , keep doing what your happy with and enjoy it, you wont agree with or please everyone so why even try too, keep at it :D

Hi, think you may be right there, everyones got an opinion on what makes a good tune, and even what makes a good night. If I find a tune i like thats new to me, i buy it (if pennies allow) and i want everyone else to hear it too and hope they like it as much as i do! If they dont, well they might like the next one i put on :D hopefully!

Pet hates:

70s mid tempo records

a nighter ending & depression setting in ('I'm never going to another nighter, what am I doing here' etc etc)

Pet sounds:

any tune that's very fast & less than 3 minutes long

Over the last 10 years I've met so many interesting & funny people that I NEVER wouldve come across if it wasnt for northern soul...so I dont have any real pet hates. Well, not soul related ones anyway.

Had a lot of fun reading this thread biggrin.gif Lots of excellent points. I think most retro scenes share the same problems:

- DJ egos and DJ bores

- elitism of the 'if you haven't been to allnighters for at least a decade/don't own at least 5 £500 tunes you are not worthy of talking to me' variety

- bitterness and small-mindedness

- forgetting the love of the music should drive everything you do, not how much money you can make or how many people will kiss your ass

The northern scene boasts some of the friendliest people around...some of you should try the mod or psych scenes out - and see how lucky you are!! :)

Elitist soul fans, I see and hear them all the time and nine times out of ten they are utter hypocrits too. I have no problem with the rare soul collector who goes to the ends of the world to spend his or her last thin dime on an extreme demo or the likes and this is great for them and indeed something to be well proud of, but please don't then harp on about it all being in the heart wrenching lyrics and the born in the back streets of detroit soul, when that is just as well conveyed on a cd or re-issue or big seven. Personally I think the plastic soulie should be re-named as the crackle and hiss fanatic.

I have a few but my main one is dj,s who turn up for their spot, do it then go straight home. and also dj,s who only go to venues that they are djing at, they never go out just to enjoy themselves at other peoples venues.BEFORE I GET IN TROUBLE DON,T MEAN ALL DJ,S

You.

ive just dicovered i hate lists of all others pet hates again :)

Bang on! Most DJ's may want to have an exclusive or two, but then there's those that don't recognise a tune unles it's got 2 or 3 zero's in the price tag, and completely ignore all of the underplayed, quality tunes that are out there on the basis that more than 5 copies exist. Value quite often dictates the play list rather than the quality of music and soul content.

WELL SAID!!!!

My pet hate at the moment is people who attend a venue advertised as playing 'sixties' tunes and then moan that they haven't heard enough 70's/modern tracks!!!

WHAT'S THAT ALL ABOUT !!!!!!! g.gif

Posted

Mine is having to go home after a soul night or nighter I NEVER WANT TO LEAVE :D:thumbup::lol: xxxxx

Only a few from me:

DJ who play records in stead of CDs (sound quality is important)

Snooker tables

Wooden dancefloors

Lack of drink promotions at venues

Unknown records

Old people

clown porn

young people

dancing without a partner

Small venues run by a few mates and there is a regular do 30mins down road

Any form of black music

People dressed as pirates.

My Pet hates are - I hate being told I look like someone! You know who you are and you tell me everytime sweetie lol! You've told me once, twice, thrice and you don't need to tell me anymore! Drinkies on the dancefloor, people who never smile lol. I mostly hear tunes out that I love and like to hear new stuff so that's not an issue.

Ive been going to nighters and soul nights for some 30 years now and the thing that pisses me of most is the roast beef sandwiches at kings hall, NO FCKIN HORSE RADDISH SAUCE ! its enough to make a bishop kick a hole through a stained glass window.
