JUST TO MENTION A POSSIBLE NEW THREAD- I FIND IT AMAZING THAT CERTAIN RECORDS ARE NOW FROWNED ON AND SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED ON THE TURNTABLE AT ANY COST, I WONDER WHETHER THIS IS A UNIVERSAL ATTITUDE OR IS IT REGIONAL (IE)YOU CAN PLAY XYZ IN LANCASHIRE BUT NOT IN LEICESTERSHIRE?

JUST TO MENTION A FEW:

WHY ARE THE FOLLOWING FROWNED UPON, OR DO I NEVER CATCH THEM WHEN PLAYED?

TAINTED LOVE GLORIA JONES- ONE OF THE BIGGEST RECORDS ON THE SCENE IN 74- IS THIS JUST DOWN TO MARK ALMOND AND FRANK?

YOU NEVER HEAR BENNY CURTIS -DIRTY HEARTS, IS THIS BECAUSE IT WAS DECLARED A SIMON RECORD? EXTREMELY ELUSIVE WEST COAST DANCE CLASSIC- THIS IS THE EPITOME OF NORTHERN SOUL DANCE.

AT THIS POINT MAY I POINT OUT THAT I THINK THERE IS A CONSIDERABLE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A DANCE CLASSIC AND A CLASSIC SOUL RECORD!

LAST BUT NOT LEAST - THE JOKER THE MILESTONES- UTTERLY SENSATIONAL, PLAYED IT AT THE RITZ AN A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO, MILES GRAYSON IS A GENIUS HASN'T ANYBODY GOT THE BALLS TO PLAY IT?

THIS IS WHAT NORTHERN SOUL WAS ALL ABOUT-ATMOSPHERIC, DRIVING BEAT, AN INSTRUMENTAL MUSICAL MASTERPIECE-RUINED BY THE JOKER HIMSELF-SIMON?

JUST ONE MORE JUST TO GET YOU GOING - FOOTSEE-WHAT YOU ALL CRY!

EVER PLAYED THE REAL VERSION BY THE CHOSEN FEW ON ROULETTE-CLASS DANCE RECORD COMPLETE WITH BREAK AND NO CAR HORNS, PLAYED THIS ONCE AT THE CASINO WHEN THE OTHER THING WAS A MONSTER, THE LOOK ON PEOPLES FACES WHEN THEY GOT TO THE BREAK AND NO HORNS!!!!

PLEASE NOTE I AM ONLY REFERING TO DANCE RECORDS WHICH HAVE BEEN AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE SCENE..........RIGHT I'LL DUCK NOW............

Possible case of soul snobbery ??

People conveniently forgetting what they used to dance to all those years ago.

Although might have to draw the line at R.B. Freeman's "I'm shaft" even though it was massive in it's day !! laugh.gif

I for one prefer my soul to be far away from that 'dance formula'. It may have been big in 76 but so was Vesta curries!

The vocal to double cooking - faith and understanding. Its awful! If the instrumental is not on the current list of plays why should the vocal. The vocal doesnt make it sound any better, worse if anything so why the fuss?

It would have been massive in the old days but not now. Times have moved on and that sound drags the scene backwards imo.

I prefer my soul to have a bit more class and more of an edge. Not the dreaded wigan poppy sounds. Great then I imagine but things have moved on.

Although they would sound ridiculous in a club these days, I can only imagine the excitement some of these weird productions would give the hoards of blocked teenagers as they boomed out over the casino's distorted sound system. Cracking stuff! :wicked:

Agree everywhere has play safe DJ's but I'm talking about big names. A guy from Sheffield posted a review saying one of them had played safe at a venue. You can't believe the hassle he's had from the North West over it. Disgusting. Even calling the mag saying sack him. The other one, did two separate venues in South Yorks. On both occaisions someone on before him played motown acetates.

He spit the dummy out. Said they were HIS records and demanded the DJ was sacked. Second time, he sent his wife to complain to the promoter for exactly the same thing. You couldn't make it up. That guy must have a very high opinion of himself. FFS

It was a lot more fun in the 70's, I can tell you. A record didn't have to pass a colour test before it got played, we just used to enjoy the music and enjoy the scene. Everyone says that 'soul police' don't exist today - of course they do, take a look at yourselves. How many of you would play Jon Ford or I've Been Hurt Shane Martin nowadays? Why not? They sound great loud and were good to dance to.

Someone correct me if i am wrong as i am speaking from second hand information. I have been fan of rare soul since about 1990 and since then I have noticed an abundance of Wigan revival nights but very little events referring to Stafford. Well it looks like this is changing with the introduction of the Stafford reunion allnighter courtesy of Chris Waterman and the team. I for one am much more excited about this than any wigan revival.

Just my opinion. I am not knocking what happened in the day as I am just more keen on the future. We have to live the future afterall!

Shane - this is my opinion, see if anyone else agrees with me. Wigan up to and including most of 1977, I can't say a bad word about the music. The very end of 77, and most of 78 was poor. This is when we had the Sue Lynns, Gene Latters, Helen Shapiro's etc - records that I have nothing against, but there was too much British stomp stomp stuff being played. So I stopped going. Then, at the end of 78, John Anderson hit a purple patch and Richard broke some of the best records ever over the next 18 months, from Cecil Washington to John & The Weirdest to The Lovers to Eddie Daye and so on. Unfortunately, the place was only half full by then except for the oldies allnighter which was always a packer. I never went to a saturday at the Casino again except for the final night which I wouldn't have missed for the world. But, apart from the hideous modern stuff and the playing of modern 12"ers which lasted 20 minutes, the music in the last 2 years of the Casino was as good as anything before or since. It was just that 18 month period before that when the worst of the music was played and unfortunately people now say that we spent our nights dancing to Joe 90 and Tony Blackburn - I personally NEVER heard Joe 90 and Tony Blackburn was played for maybe 2 weeks as a cover up.

I always enjoy myself wherever i go. I can enjoy out and out oldie nights as much as the next man. However, the music was poor for long periods in my opinion. I didnt wake up the next day and think how good the music. I remember just having a great night with my friends. The problem is I attend many venues and I find it easy to compare. I am talking about Lifeline/soultown/flipside at sheridans, 100 club, wilton, notts union, new century etc.

You are right though Dave I have no authority on what should be played. Its just that I am spoiled one week and let down the next. Thats life i suppose.

Good for you Pete for having the balls to mention Rain, Paula Parfitt etc. They were an integral part of the scene :wicked:

When Cleethorpes took off in 75 I went there instead of Wigan (some people tend to forget the influence Cleggy had) and I sometimes ask for some of "their" oldies.

It's quite ironic that some DJs who played Black Nasty, Elusive, Willi J then won't entertain em now, even at "revivals" on the Eastern side of the country laugh.gif

no worries nobody is going to play wigan pop, just to remind you that I left Wigan because of the pop crap that was being played IN 1976 as you have noticed so did Pete and a hell of a lot of others, I was not prepared to listen to Sandie Shaw and Tim Tam and the Jerk offs and bailed out to St Ives AND THAT UNFORTUNATELY WAS DRIVEN BY ANOTHER PROFITEER WHO WAS UNINTERESTED IN THE SCENE.

In fact just for the record I stood up to him and got sacked for it unlike some of the others Soul Sam etc.

Surprised you didnt enjoy Sams at Xmas it was a REUNION basically all the old stuff, we had a big problem getting people to leave at the end.

Spot on, some interesting points here, unfortunately my boss has my nose to grindstone these days so cant contribute, have found things I agree and disagree with here, but definitely the point about Wigans last 2 years, I only started going last 2 years and for 18 months before end went nearly every Saturday, some times with half a dozen dancing on main floor, but it set my taste for life, some of the best music ever played (some still getting played) in those times.

Cheers

Obviously does have a big opinion of himself[think i know him]but at least the promoters will know not to book him again, lots of other good djs from the NW,at the end of the day big name or not,the promoters get the final say. After all its their money on the line.Just realised that after telling you how good NW venues are,my main promotion is sheridans, yorkshire,we are obviously not to bright eithier m8.

Ha Ha. Nice.

I didn't miss many Wigan all nighters / oldies inclusive, '75 til end. I was gobsmacked when you told me years ago that all these "new" oldies I liked had all been first spun at Wigan. :shhh:

Or was every one in Mr. M's keeping away from all the pop

when i said the latter days of wigan being poor and stafford raising the quality again, i was refering to comments from Keb Darge. When Wigan closed I was 7 years old so as I said I was no authority on the scene. Looking at that list it makes your mouth water and I wish I was there to enjoy it.  I hope people didnt take me the wrong way as I was only raising comment with a view for clarification.

Not at all Shane, I think thats the point, people over years have talked about Wigan being pop and its generally accepted Shane, so its good to discuss thatg openly. By the time I started going most of the pop stuff had dissapeared (except for one obvious culprit and even he wasnt too bad all the time) and I was mystified by all the talk of Wigan playing pop.

Cheers, hope to see you sometime.
