Mel Britt

Apologies if this has been done before, but with SS being down I had a look at another Soul site, and found the marvellous bit of information that Mel Britt was actually first played AFTER Wigan closed, along with Nabay.

Either this is total bollocks :wicked: or Ian Levine truly was ahead of his time.

Won't say which site it is, in case of legal action

Just checked the site out--Talking utter B*$*S%"T again-- so my "Bootleg"of mel Britt that I bought around 1976-must be an original as it had no been discovered, so could not have been pressed and now must be worth £600 ?

John Anderson was also ahead of his time releasing Nabay on grapevine before it was known !

Well done for having the guts to visit this site, anyone know which "national Press" it was featured in ??

Bought both Mel Britt (Barrie Waddington) and Nabay (Casino Record Bar), and was playing both at Concorde Soul Club in 77/78. If I had 'em by then, so did lots of others. Unfortunately the Nabay was traded on and hasn't been replaced yet. ....Damn!

It's a case of several dj's having it at the same time then because Pep was playing it as well but nobody was interested. Seems odd to say it but at the time that record was considered 2nd division stuff.

Any anyone who calls it Narbay instead of Nabay is very f*cking annoying :P

Let's all agree that NYD & Funk is crap - & pop music from Israel is wonderful - glad that is sorted then.

Just on the bootlegs of MB, obviously done at Monarch on the west coast, with that white ring and all that... most you come across are styrene, mines heavy vinyl, anybody else got one of these?

Mal.C.

Second press from recent times is vinyl but as far as I know, none of the 1976 bootlegs were done on vinyl, maybe it's a Jamaican original!

He was from Lebanon not Israel. Apparently.

With tunes like that around no wonder there is always unrest in the Middle East - Nabay is one of the worst atrocities inflicted on the western world. thmbdn.gif IMHO of course.

Oh Yes, :wicked:

Never mind.

It was a top tune we all enjoyed dancing to in the late 70s.In those days the Middle East was a Notts Palais Alldayer FFS,get a grip

:ohmy::lol::wub:

Never understood how the Nabay 45 ever found itself the object of the "soul police". It's a fantastic record, completely dominated by it's Mike Theodore and Dennis Coffey arangement. Powerful Drum/Bass line, simple chorus, great hookline, decent vocal, all creating an atmospheric dancer. Some would say.....Err.... all the makings of a Northern Soul classic. :shades:

Nabay was in fact a local Detroiter, although he was of Lebonese descent.

Yes - those Detroit greats did a fine job - it is a pity you can't polish a turd though.

Richard Searling (Wigan Casino) listed his top ten of 1975 in Blues & Soul no. 178 -

1 'She'll Come Running Back' - Mel Britt (FIP)

2 'I Can See Him Loving You' - Anderson Brothers (GSF)

3 'Let Me Make You Happy' - Billy Woods (Sussex)

4 'I Got The Vibes' - Joshie Jo Armstead (Gospel Truth)

5 'Lend A Hand' - Bobby Hutton (ABC)

6 'Now You've Got The Upper Hand' - Candi Staton (Unity)

7 'Have love Will Travel' - Rosey Jones (Today)

8 'I Love My Baby' - International GTO's (Rojak)

9 'I've Got The Need' - Moments (All Platinum)

10 'Breakaway' - Ernie Bush ( Contempo)

Imagine a Mel Britt, Billy Woods and Bobby Hutton turning up now in the same year now!

Further to my earlier answer John poole assures me Sam had & was playing Nabay at Samanthas, and it seems the record was put to the back of his box to be re-activated a couple of years later. I heard it at Wigan when it stuck with me as a great detroit 45.

i'm really suprised to see JJA on the list ,not just for '75, but at all!!!.

Like i've said before, a lot of the Mecca stuff bombed at Wigan around that era,and you don't get any "MECCA" at that time than JJA.

Be interesting ,to some, if anyone has memories of the reaction to "I GOT THE VIBES ".,,,,KEV

You have to remember that RS was doing a lot of one-offs on other days of the week at that time, possibly got better reactions on JJA at some of them than at the Casino. Most of us local DJ's gave "I got the vibes" a lot of plays, prob because it was easy to get hold of!

Might have been the all dayers after the niters closed Rob, but I've got loads of tapes with playlists on them from Sams nighters 75/76 when Sam was a resident, and Nabay is not listed on any of them. JV will remember no doubt.

Mel Britt played at Mecca, 1975. Fact. Joshie Jo Armstead also something of an anthem, alongside Oscar Perry "I Got What You Need", and a (reactivated) Bobby Hutton etc.

Just to be awkward, I have to say that I quite like Nabay! (I'd read somewhere it was "poppy" before I actually heard it, but the vocal arrangement reminds me a bit of the Gospel Classics on Chess!)

Glad you mentioned that as I was beginning to believe I'd dreamed it, but I was offered a vinyl copy of Mel Britt passed off as an "original" for £12 in 1976 or early 1977 (I won't say by whom!) - so it looks as though vinyl bootlegs from that period do exist, as I'm pretty sure the originals are all styrene copies.
