spot
What a difficult question & I don't think I've got one Soul best mate but I've definately got a few, who are; Gary Wood, my brother in law, because in October 72 we went together to our first nighter at Leeds Central & now some 35 years later are still going to nighters together. William "Snowy" Snow because he introduced me to this scene & after not seeing him for 20 odd years we just picked up where we left off. Neil "Nell" Goddard, I'm unsure why but we exchanged words & a laugh at Drax Soul night bar some 4 years+ ago & just hit it off, he's a mean looking so & so but as sweet as kitten & a heart of gold. Theres my top three Soulie mates & the ones I'd do anything for that was in my power but theres plenty more very good soulie mates & some non soulie ones to. Take care & be safe, Spot. Guest MARTIN SNOW
Gary Lee. Rarely appears in public as he's too busy writing down IX Chains catalogue numbers still to clear, from 1977 editions of Blues and Soul. It has been alleged that he works on rare occasions. Unknown to him I was priveleged to catch a preview of his coming week when he left his diary open on the table on Saturday, it read as follows : Monday : The start of a hectic week. Get all 1976 45's off the shelves first thing in the morning and embark on a hard day playing these. Check all B&S editions from same year to establish any Friends & Co titles I might be missing. Tuesday : Continue playing 1976 45's, whilst sharpening pencils in order to make further notes in exercise book # 3 of anymore interesting statistics that I was previously unaware of. Phone Martin to tell him about some northern bastard who's posted a load of crap on Soul Source. Wednesday : Continue playing 1976 45's whilst calculating how many more statistics I might still be unaware of, although that in itself is another statistic, as is that. Phone Paul Philips to tell him he must be mad to drive all the way to the other side of London to do a radio show. Thursday : Continue playing 1976 45's whilst removing 1977's from shelves in order to prepare for next weeks duties, might have to get up earlier than normal for that operation. This of course assumes that I have already played 80% of those from 1976 that I possess. Check in Black Echoes to establish where Chris Hills was DJ'ing this week 30 years ago. Allow time to answer the phone as I have a feeling there may be a removal in the air. Friday : Continue playing 1976 45's in the morning, leaving the afternoon free incase I have to do some work this week. My brother hinted we might have to move some office furniture today so must ensure van exhaust pipe is still intact and prepare myself for the outbreak of physical activity. A punishing shedule as you can see. Link to comment Social source share

Chatty
It would have to be Bluey, I was first introduced to him when I was but a callow youth at Wigan. He was very popular, well known to vast numbers on the scene at the time, was always warmly welcomed when he appeared, and would never let you down (not too early anyway) . Normally there most weeks at the allnighter, but on the occasions he wasn't it was never the same. Some weeks people would search frantically for him, whilst others said they had bumped into him or knew someone who had. Would you believe there where certain authorities who didn't want him around the place and would take measures to stop him attending or try to nab him when he did! Alas I have not met or looked for his acquaintance for many a long year. In fact i don't if he is still around or has long since perished?. But I only have to think about, or bump into someone who knew him back in the day and it brings back memories of some of the best times of my life. Bluey take a bow son! Robbk
Rod Shard. He heard about me, and contacted me in 1979 or so. Then, he visited me starting in 1980 or 1981, and did so every year through the 1980s and early 1990s. He was the first actual friend I made on The NS scene. Why: Because he found me a lot of great records over those years, and he hoovered my flat (so he could breathe). I was also friendly with Dave Withers. But, I had dealings with Martin Koppel, Dave Raistrick, Nev Wherry, Tim Ashibende (posing as "John Sullivan"), Ady Croasdell, Tony Rounce, John Manship, John Anderson, Bob "Larry" Wagner, and Larry (Snakepit), who used to go to The Twisted Wheel. I also had several meetings with Simon Soussan (but, I wouldn't call him a "mate"). Of course, I also visited Rod and Dave in Lancashire most of the years in the 1980s and early 1990s, plus a few years in the late 1990s and early 2000s. I attended a few all-nighters, and some dayers. I always visited John Anderson and John Manship on my annual UK visit. Whiskyagogo
My BESTEST SOUL MATE in the World EVER! is VAN ASTBURY to my never ending sorrow now departed. I was divorced living on me own in 94, kids were the other side of OZ and I heard Saxie Russell playing over the fence, YES!! Talked about our scene and Wigan days and stayed Soulful for ever. That's me true mate Van, loved him to bits, woulda married him if his gorgeous wife Les would have agreed. So many great memories, Thank you.
