Just got another copy of this which has different labels to the one I already have, they both have the same label number 526 so did this have 2 issues? What's the story please?

It was obviously pressed at least twice, and I think it is just a matter of different pressing runs, plants, or whatever.

Hi Paul

I have the Clown On Bike copy of this one.

We are currently trying to address many issues regarding some of the well loved labels at Hitsville.

The scan with the Clown on Bike we have for this release, I haven't seen the other before for this release,

Dave Moore might know as he wrote the Carnival Feature on Hitsville,

and started the Quest to complete the different label scans.

I have the two label variations for the same release number on this one by the Lovettes.

I have a feeling that the Carnival Records Logo on the left is the earlier design, with the Clown on Bike the later design.

Depends on the issue number, as to which is the rarer design I believe.

It is the first one that I've seen on the Earier Design for 526, but I have only just started collecting the Carnival Label.

This is not a definitive answer Roger but here's my theory as a number of the label's discs appear on both label designs it's as good as any I reckon. Joe eventually got access to credit line from Columbia and I think he may have paid cash for his first runs and then later used the credit line to press up extra copies to either:

a. Cash in on a successful local hit.

or

b. Relaunch the single a second time.

The strange thing is the way the label went from Clown/Bike design to the other one for these second(?) releases and then returned to the clown/bike logo. Maybe that 's the clue to option b.

Probably way off the mark, but it's theory eh?

I understood that, but how do we know they were not simultaneous releases? It seems to me that we often make things up in retrospect and sometimes wrongly consider certain releases 'more original' than others when in fact they were just released around the same time but manufactured at different locations for different markets. I am sure it was often just a case of them running out of yellow paper down at the plant, and then they just kept making more records with whatever colour paper they had available, pink, green, or whatever, or they gave a plant in another city a call and asked them to press up a few more copies. And then 40 years later a bunch of people dream up stories and elaborate schemes when it was really nothing to it in the first place. I am not saying this is the case in this case, or that indeed it does not matter at times, but I think you see what I mean anyway. If you look at Carnival for instance many records come in both styrene and vinyl, despite having the same label design, this probably means they were pressed at different plants. It perhaps means that one is rarer than the other, or that one format is an earlier release. It means there are different varieties manufactured at different places for different markets, and usually that is all it means.

Seems like we are thinking on similar lines, the different pressing plants used, released at different times, etc.

Yes, it will be good as each Label completes, however, extra Information is always welcome on each release.

It's a long term project, but well worth the effort.

Intriguing, because as Dave says, his is only a Theory.

This may well be the reason, It's so hard to piece things together years later.

One thing about this label that is Amazing, is that It's Logo carried over to the U.K. for a couple of releases.

How many other U.S. Labels could boast that!, We have had a very Interesting Thread regarding this.

Apparently quite common releases at the time, but an achievement all the same.
