Soul-slider
I like other types of music too, especially Reggae/Ska. The Soul side of me is because i'm the kind of person who just loves the emotion in the songs. Another man's heartache alway's makes you know that you're not alone with your pain. We've all felt vunerable and been hurt by love at times in our lives, Soul captures these moments and records them onto vinyl. Link to comment Social source share
Guest Dante
Who knows? I just do That's exactly the answer I was looking for. Thanks Mr. Rounce It's not the perfect music, though. There is no perfect music if you ask me. But I think the combination of my tastes it's the perfect one Mix northern soul with The Clash, The Jam and The Smiths and you're in heaven Cheers Dante Link to comment Social source share

Guest
Oooo so many reasons, the comfort of hearing sounds you know and love, the buzz when you hear something new that makes you sit up and listen (or run to the floor).......the way people are (mostly) happy at do's, meeting new people, the way people dress on the scene, discovering new venues, shiny shoes, bag carrying...sorry getting carried away. To sum up (and echoing others) - I just DO ! Link to comment Social source share

Guest WPaulVanDyk
plain and simple could be an answer. like Motown i doubt they would make a record and just release it so they used up simple ideas but worked so long on them to perfect it. Some soul songs have more emotion, how you can not be moved or anything by songs like When a Man Loves a Woman Link to comment Social source share
Guest andyrattigan
Feel the same. What I can't understand is why everybody doesn't feel this way? Im glad not everyone likes Soul music. I feel I am one of the priviliged few that gets it. As a young country bumpkin in the west of ireland I had to travel long distances in Ireland or over to the UK just to have a dance. I even used to do it on my own most of the time and the reason for this is that I just kept on wanting to hear what was to me the most exciting, passionate and visceral music form there is. Don't know to be honest, but perfectly summed up I too like lots of different types of music yet still nothing promotes the same feelings as when listening to N Soul either, as you say. Can't even be down to the nostalgic factor of being the first type of music most of us heard either, i for one was into general rock/pop music & then early 70's soul/disco before i had ever heard any ! Guest mel brat
Genetics. Like sprouts, marmite, bananas, you either do.. or you don't! No half measures! Y'know, there may be something in that theory. But how come our (real!) sisters and brothers didn't always get into it? Timing must come into it somewhere, huh? - I don't like sprouts or Marmite though... I wonder what would happen if they start messing with young Soul folk's DNA, replacing the 'I like Soul' DNA strand with, say a C & W, or a light orchestral one for example. Will soulful folk die out altogether? Will they be having Northern Brass Band Allnighters sometime in the future? Will record prices ever come down again...? Questions, questions... Guest Bogue
It seems quite an innocuous question at first, but when you start to think about it, why are people attracted to different types of music ? If you go with the Darwin theory of life could it stem from the pitch of the call signs of our ancestors ? Guest kent soul club
It is hard to explain, and it does seem you either get it or you don't. We are just blessed that we do feel it, because I just don't believe that other types of music can make people feel quite so good as Northern Soul does. On the other hand, it must be more than just the music, because we started bringing my older sister along to local soul nights, as she was at a bit of a loose end after her marriage broke up. Now I know she had heard the music before, and I know she'd always thought we were a bit daft, because she knows how everytime we go out it is a logistical nightmare. She just had no interest in it. But then, she comes out with us one night, and she can't believe it! The dance floor full of (mostly male) people of all shapes and sizes, mostly all getting on a bit, some very smartly dressed, some scruffy gits, some really good dancers, some completely out of time-but all of them having a bloody good time. Not there to pose, or get pissed up and fight, and the blokes not leering at the women all night. (accidental poetry!) She suddenly got it, she realised why we miss all the family dos, why we go out all night and are knackered for the rest of the week, why we spend silly money on old records that no-ones ever heard of. It was like suddenly she could hear the music, and seeing the emotion on other people faces made her hear it. The birth of a new Northern Soul fan at the age of 47! I think what I mean is, while the music is pure brilliance, it is also our scene which makes it even more so. The knowledge that we know not everyone gets it, and because we do we are so much richer, in our lives, than all those others. Amen. vaultofsouler
The question is asking WHY ????.... The answer of us all begins with BECAUSE.... Between us we can "GET" the "why and because" bit.... allbeit in our own way as shown by answers above.... so all parts of the answers hit a cord with us in some way.... Suppose what I'm saying is.... and forgive me for saying so to the topic starter.... but why ask the question on a SOUL FORUM as the answer is pretty much obvious to all us all "IN THE KNOW".... AND.... to be honest.... after 20 years plus of this self same question I'm f*ck*n fed up of explaining the WHY and BECAUSE to people I know who just do not GET IT like we do.... it's now become "VERY PERSONAL" to me and "f*ck you" to them as I don't even now try to explain it.... The plain and simlpe answer is it just "GRABBED YOU AND BY THE (men and women use their own adjectives here) AND YOU NEVER LET IT GO".... the upshot being.... "WE WILL NEVER EVER LET IT GO".... Guest ScooterNik
Until friday night, the current Mrs FB had no interest in soul whatsoever as she'd only heard it out of my stereo. I'd tried explaining that in the right place, with the right atmosphere and the sound balance just right for the room its a truly amazing sound. She wouldn't have it... Then I took her in the soul room at a rally this weekend, instant convert. I asked her why the change of heart and all I got was 'WOW, its 'kin brilliant' Now she's borrowing all my cd's. She can keep her hands off my vinyl though Link to comment Social source share

Guest moggy
Why do I love soul music Putting all the other parts of the scene to one side, Nighters, Friendship, etc, etc & just answering the question about the music Lyrics, plain and simple (for me anyway) No, not every soul record floats my boat But them that do aahhhhhhhhhh bliss sheer bliss They all seem to have a story to tell About love, heartache, life, death, and they seem to say it in such a way I can really relate too We all must have noticed, as the years have gone bye and we get that little bit older How certain lyrics to soul records, especialy Can ring so true When I was a yoot, I maybe liked the more catchy numbers, the indemanders I suppose But as the years have rolled bye, I have come to respect the lyrics to so many soul records, because so many seem to sum up parts of my life perfectly Millie Jacksons House For Sale outstanding Ray Pollards The Drifter, When my daughter was born (24 years ago) The Velvet Satins Nothing Can Compare To You, was in my eyes, her record Martha Reeves No One There simply haunting, Johhny Mae Mathews I have No Choice The list could be endless, but I struggle to see where in any other form of music, the lyrics can be so close to our every day ups and downs of life. Any way enough doom & gloom Just wanted to let you know why I love soul music Link to comment Social source share
